I’m having a hard time getting into this Chandrar arc so far. The chapter isn’t bad, and there are genuinely interesting ideas in it—the Mad Ones, Pisces’ fencing development, the tension around Ceria’s circlet, and the argument between Pisces and Colth were probably the strongest parts for me. But as a whole, the Horns feel strangely stagnant. That’s the biggest difference compared to the Crossroads. The Crossroads felt like an adventure. There was constant discovery, danger, mystery, and a clear sense that the Horns were pushing forward into something unknown. Here, they’re technically moving around Chandrar, but it feels like everyone else is moving them. Yisame has an agenda, the Heromakers have an agenda, rival adventurers have an agenda, Flos is watching them, and Nerrhavia’s Fallen keeps dragging them into political games. The Horns themselves don’t feel like they’re driving the story. I also think the politics and manipulation are starting to become exhausting rather than exciting. The parade especially bothered me. There’s something genuinely dark and interesting about Pisces realizing the celebration is manufactured, slavery is being deliberately hidden from them, and Yisame can casually spend absurd amounts of money to control appearances. But every time the chapter starts digging into something uncomfortable, it backs away into another joke or distraction before the tension can really land. The most interesting story here, to me, is the Horns themselves falling apart a little. Ksmvr is gone, Colth still doesn’t completely feel like part of the family, Pisces and Ceria are developing very different moral outlooks, and Ceria’s circlet is becoming increasingly concerning. I wish the chapter focused harder on that instead of constantly introducing another character, political situation, training session, or piece of worldbuilding. There are a lot of good individual scenes, but they feel more like accumulation than progression. I keep waiting for all these threads to finally converge into something the Horns desperately care about. Right now, instead of feeling like they’re on their next great adventure, it feels like they’re touring Chandrar while everyone plays political games around them. I’m still interested in where it goes, especially with Pisces, Ceria, and the team dynamic, but this has definitely been a weaker start to an arc for me. The Crossroads made me want to keep reading because I needed to know what was around the next corner. Here, I’m mostly waiting for the actual story to kick into gear.

I feel like thats on purpose. The darker themes are disjointed and distracted like the horns themselves. They are splitting apart because they have lost sight of who they are and what makes them great. I think its going to be a big turning point where ceria realises what she has become(probably because of her aunt), Pisces puts his foot down and truly becomes the scourge, Yvlonne stands up to ysamine for the hemp, and colth stops seeing himself as the veteran rookie but a true team member. And more importantly they all start trusting eachother and themselves again. This being pushed around by forces greater than themselves is necessary because they need to hit breaking point and stand up for themselves and become that greater power to become named rank. Ksmvr already had his big charecter arch and has become what he needs to be. Thats why he is separated with voifia who needs guidance in how the world works rather than charecter development. All the chandrarian horns need to learn to stand up for themselves. Im facinated by how far they let themselves be pushed before they snap. This is difficult because most of their character archs have been power and confidence building and this one needs to tear them apart first and its all of them (on page) at once instead of one at a time.
