Predator (1987) - Massive Meet-up Mash-up Podcast!

In a very special event-podcast prompted by the recent death of the brilliant Carl Weathers, I organised a 'big meet-up' episode in which I put together a crack team of my fellow battle-hardened macho warriors, all of whom I love in a very manly way - Elliot Chapman, George Daniel Lea, James Slater Murphy, AND Kit Power - to discuss classic Hollywood 80s SF/Action Schwarzenegger cheese Predator, possibly the most unintentionally homoerotic film ever made.

So I just re listened to this episode yesterday and I wanted to comment on a brief moment when you guys discussed the Marvel movies. I think this was also touched on in the iron man episodes and the dark knight episodes and I've always wanted to throw my thoughts into the ring. In regards to the marvel movies and the neo liberal agenda in them I always think back to captain America civil war. I had always thought that in captain America civil war steve Roger's objection to oversight and regulation was to avoid being used as a tool for imperialistic or nationalistic ambitions, or assassinations which Dutch was against in Predator as well. I feel that the movie didn't really do much with this idea. I initially thought this because while watching the movie and hearing the arguments for oversight I was constantly reminded of the role of Superman in "the dark knight returns" graphic novel by Frank Miller. Superman is a weapon of the US government in that story and that always sat wrong with me even the first time I read that story in 2005. I always felt that steve Roger's was responding to that idea of superheros and their role in the world even though it's from a different comic universe. I felt that especially in Steve Roger's story arc he is pure of heart and is actually working for what is right even if it questiones or opposes the government or the global order. This is echoed in the Winter Soldier movie as well. I always felt that the studio missed an amazing chance to discuss this and how it relates to super heros and stuff and it would have made for a really good movie if done right. Obviously thats asking too much for a marvel movie. Anyway i enjoyed the predator episode again and I found the discussion fascinating and I am very much looking forward to an episode on Last Action Hero as I'd love to hear your thoughts on that film as well.
