Same Log Spooktober 2 Ends... 'Hereditary' (2018)

The Same Log team's diversion for Spooktober finally ends, only 3 months and a week after Halloween.  But we're going out with a bang, talking about Ari Aster's breakout 2018 masterpiece of modern Horror, Hereditary, in which the occult (hidden) and exploitative nature of the bourgeois nuclear family is explored via the literal occult.

This is a film that, for me, strikes the perfect balance between the literal and the figurative in uncanny storytelling, exploring real world material dynamics of class, family, psychology, and abuse via both routes, and thus brilliantly using the supernatural as a way to express the full force of how it feels to live inside modernity.

So I was delighted to get a chance to chat about this text with my brilliant friends, and I plan to write about it in the future.

Special thanks to my friend Holly Boson for suggesting the music track I used, Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez (yes, I know.)

In the chat we mention the commentary on the film over at the excellent Esoterica YouTube channel, so here's a link: https://youtu.be/4vJQVFwjcZo?si=P2g0KHFX6gs5ZPNf

And here's the link to Who Is Afraid of Degrowth? again: https://en.goteo.org/project/who-is-afraid-of-degrowth

And, of course, a version of this discussion will soon be up at George's YouTube channel: ExaggeratedElegy - YouTube

Something I think could have added depth to the apt Paimon-trump parallel is that Paimon is described in the book Annie looks at as the god of mischief. Crucially, it is a film which severely lacks mischief. The cult summoning a god of mischief for material gains is also fascinating because usually you have to trade something dear to you for such rewards from a devil, but perhaps not so for Paimon...
