Backer St Irregulars 14: The Copper Beeches

This time myself, Kit, and Daniel chat about the last story in the collection The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 'The Adventure of the Copper Beeches', and... holy shit is this story is a doozy.  One of the greatest, most fascinating, and most disturbing stories in the Holmes canon.  Consequently, I think this may be one of our best episodes, featuring lots of laughs and insights.  Daniel even comes up with an entirely new forensic theory of the case!

Thanks as ever to Kit for doing the editing.

Hope you enjoy it.

J.

Since you like reading into short stories, a short story (not Holmes, but still) you could read into that is the Ur-reading-into short story is "The Sandman" (1817) by E. T. A. Hoffmann: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sandman_%28short_story%29 https://archive.vcu.edu/germanstories/hoffmann/sand_e.html I say it's the Ur-reading-into short story because Freud did so in his essay "The Uncanny" (1919): https://www.freud.org.uk/2020/02/01/the-sandman/ https://docslib.org/doc/2804589/freud-s-1919-the-uncanny-the-standard-edition-of-the-complete

As soon as I saw which story youse were up to, I was thinking "how many minutes in before Jack says the word 'Gothic'?" and to my surprise it was 31! It's such a gothic story and probably my second favourite of the shorts I've read after the Red-Headed League
