Marxists on Fascism 1: Terry Eagleton's What is Fascism?
The first in what I hope will become a regular series (two a month, hopefully) of readings (by myself and possibly others) of some of the most interesting writing on fascism from within the Marxist tradition.
Eagleton's essay, read above, was written in 1976, and is a characteristically elegant capsule synthesis of some of the best Marxist interpretations of fascism. It is particularly good, I think, in its quick and devastating account of how Stalinism in Germany helped Hitler to power.
Of course, I don't agree with every word of it, and it has a specific context that is very removed from ours (Britain in the mid 1970s). Even so, this is excellent.
