Spooktober 3.5: The Masque of the Red Death (Corman, 1964)
I reconvene with George & Elliot for our belated Christmas / New Years celebration, a discussion of Roger Corman's masterpiece, 1964's The Masque of the Red Death, an adaptation of about four different Poe stories and Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal and Sade's 120 Days of Sodom. A gorgeous and spellbinding triumph of Cormanic alchemy - simultaneously thrilling mass-audience pop schlock AND morally and philosophically complex arthouse surrealism AND gadfly satire of US consumerism and imperial decadence - this is a movie that had all three of us raving about the brilliant Corman, the priceless Vincent Price, their other collaborations, the unfairly non-megastar Skip Martin, 60s arts culture, purblind and lazy critics, Edgar Allan Poe, Nietzsche, Christianity and Satanism, metaphysics, etc etc etc...
