Introducing the Sweetheart Apron
From its origins as a workaday dress protector, by the 1940s and 50s the humble apron had evolved into a garment in its own right as part of the housewife's daily wardrobe. Simple to make and inexpensive to buy, the apron became a novelty item, to be themed with the seasons and the occasion. Women wore aprons not just functionally but decoratively: a dinner party hostess would welcome guests in her prettiest dress and daintiest ‘cocktail apron’ - I’ve seen vintage examples in glamorous fabrics like taffeta, satin and organdie, clearly not designed for functionality.
This apron, with its heart-shaped bib and pockets, was inspired by a 1944 copy of Women’s Illustrated magazine - which is one of the free magazines included for patrons this month. I’ve included two styling options, one using 1” bias binding to finish the raw edges (check out the tutorial for detailed instructions to get the perfect sharp V and mitred corner!), and one using a ruffled trim. You can also omit the bib and just make a half apron - perfect for cocktail party entertaining!
The printable pattern is available in two print sizes. Choose the A4 template for the print-at-home version (it is laid out to fit on both A4 and US Letter paper - remember to select "100%" or "actual size" in the print preferences, and check the measurement guide to ensure it's sized correctly). You can print the A1 version at a copy shop or through online printing services.

Would it be possible on these bigger projects with more than 1 view if we could get a pattern layout for the pdf's. Like for view 1 I would need pages 2-7 12-18 printed and so on? Just a thought.
Thanks for the suggestion, that’s a really good idea! I’ll have a look at doing that for this project and make sure to include it for future projects.
That is so lovely and the reason i joined your patreon. i’m a bit sad that with a tier of 10 euro a month i can not get the powder puff pattern.....would have loved to have it too!
You can always join at the higher tier (which is equivalent to the price of 2 months' price) to access the archive, then downgrade to your preferred tier.
Gorgeous 😍🥰😍🥰
Thank you!
Thank you so much!!! This pattern is so cute and I'm so excited to make it! 💛
I can't wait to see!
I may be confused but I'm unsure where to find how much fabric to buy. I looked all through the instructions and still can't find it. Can you help me please?
Hi Lily! You will need 1 1/3 yd or 1.2m of 60" / 150cm wide fabric, or 1 2/3 yd / 1.5m 45"/115cm wide fabric. (This is for view 1 or 2 - view 3 will require more because of the longer skirt)
I would like if possible a quick instruction sheet so i don't need to print the instructions with all the pictures. It would be useful for advanced sewers like me.
Thanks, that’s useful to know! I’ll add a text instruction sheet to future projects.
Im so happy i can print the pattern properly using a letter sheet.
Please let me know how you get on - I’m new to creating patterns so your feedback is very helpful!
I can't open the A4 version of the pattern. It's not a PDF.
I realised after I left for work this morning that I exported in the wrong file type! 🙈 I’ll update the files as soon as I get home in a few hours! Sorry for the confusion.
I love a 40s apron pattern! Can't wait to make this 💖
I will be shopping my stash this weekend for a new apron! Definitely!
It’s a great stash buster because it doesn’t require that much fabric. I can’t wait to see what you create!
Thank you much. Such a fantastic pattern, especially with saint valentine's approaching.
Love this 💝 Don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I'm having problems opening the file. Would it be possible to have it in PDF format?
Ah, I forgot to export them as PDFs, I will re-upload the files by the end of the day. I'm glad you like the project!
