Magazine: Everywoman September 1949
There are two articles of especial interest in this issue of Everywoman from 1949. The first offers couture dressmaking tips from five prominent designers for a polished look in your home dressmaking endeavours.
The second is a wonderfully strident critique of the movie industry and its assumption that all women only enjoy romance films, and nothing else:
It is a sad fact that nearly every producer at work in the world today holds audiences in the deepest contempt. They are generally considered to be sexually inhibited defectives aged about twelve who need only something brightly coloured and shining waggled about in front of their eyes to keep them quiet and content.
It's of particular interest to me because one of the three films highlighted happens to be Whisky Galore, one of my childhood favourite films (and a favourite of my dear father) - which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it! The 2016 remake is also quite wonderful (and, if we're completely honest, slightly more watchable than the 1949 version, given that most of the story takes place at night and in almost complete darkness on screen).
