Second Wind | General Store Map Pack!

Hey all!

This month, we have another great collaboration with James RPG Art for a wonderful concept scene and animation on this great General Store scene.

Our approach was reversed this time, with James providing me with a scene first and me building a map and concept around that scene. The end result is a shop known as the Second Wind, a popular stop for adventurers in town that is owned and operated by one ex-adventurer, Cameron King.

Here is the great animated scene from James RPG Art to pair along with the location:

James' RPG Art makes animated scenes to help players visualise environments and add immersion and tone to your games. He has created over 300 scenes from official WotC adventures and many unique locations that are often found in a D&D adventure. He releases 4 new locations each month for his patrons.

And here is the exterior of the corresponding map:

I've also created an interior map to pair with this one, allowing the PC's to browse its wares, interact with the proprietor and, in future installments, perhaps obtain some semi-permanent quarters in the upstairs apartments and make use of his wagon.

Here is the interior, which includes the main shop, wagon yard, storage room, private quarters, privy and upstairs entry:

The Second Wind is home to the veteran adventurer, Cameron King, who has retired from active campaigns and now runs a shop catering to the needs of the next generation. While he no longer plays an active role, Cameron, or "King" as his friends call him, still has a network of contacts and wealth of experience to make available to up and coming adventuring parties.

How can I use this shop?

  1. Simple Shop - This could simply be a shop in your game world that offers the companions an opportunity to resupply, upgrade some arms and armor, hear of a few rumors and be on their way.

  2. Resource Center - If you needed an NPC contact that could help deliver resources to the party (i.e. information, supplies, contacts, transport, etc...), then this store could be a recurring location to which your party travels to both obtain said resources and make any required payment for services rendered.

  3. Quest Hub - While no longer actively adventuring, King still corresponds with several active players in the game, many of whom may be looking to enlist the services of a new adventuring party for a task here or there. This would be a great way to begin, or continue, an adventure and provide some nebulous employers whose missions may cause moral dilemmas or involve complex layers.

Experience System

I also liked the idea of King being a potential resource to your players, providing a suite of services in return for Experience Points they earn with him by taking jobs. The more jobs, the more points. The more dangerous, the more points. You can decide how many points make sense for the particular job, but here are some ideas for what players could trade those points in for on other, future adventures:

1 Point | "I'll do you a favor."

King provides a mundane piece of equipment, makes an introduction or provides a minor piece of information relevant to the party's quest.

1 Point | "I know a guy."

King knows a contact who can perform a specific service: blacksmith, translator, guide, fence, sailor, healer, etc...and will get the party introduced in short order.

2 Points | "You owe me."

King calls in a big favor with one of his contacts. They provide significant assistance in the form of transportation, protection, safe passage, specialized services or a similar offering, but Cameron expects the party to repay him later.

2 Points | "I've got just the thing."

King is able to order and procure a specialized item needed by the party, whether it be protection against the Undead, a one-time master key that unlocks any lock, or some other nuanced piece of equipment that would tip the scales in the party's favor for the upcoming encounter.

5 Points | "Hail to the King, baby."

Cameron personally accompanies the party on a dangerous job.

As always, Cameron King has a wonderful Sprite and Token created by Katsudon Art to use for these encounters:

And, as has been the recent practice, I created an NPC card for Cameron that won't have all of his combat abilities, but should provide you with enough to get started in the right direction.

I hope you enjoy the map, concept and potential game mechanic for your players!
