FIRST TIME WATCHING: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) E1
Happy Monday Folks!
Hope you all had a great weekend. It's time to give this show a go. Full disclosure, after watching this first episode, I'm not sure if I will be watching this entire series. This first episode felt really lukewarm to me. I'm definitely going to give the next two episodes a chance, but if I find myself not enjoying the show, then I will likely pivot to something else.
There's just a lot of things to cover with Shogun releasing soon and other shows I'd like to check out. I also don't think my reactions are as enjoyable when I'm feeling "meh" about a show. Thanks for understanding!
For this week, the schedule will be as follows:
MON: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) E1
WED: Poll
THU: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) E2
FRI: Wonka (2024)
NOTE: This week, I'm only doing two episodes and one movie to give myself a bit of a break. I have a medical procedure this week and want to give myself a chance to recover a little from that. Next week, I'll be posting more content than this.
As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon! Until the next one, take care and stay golden.

Nat I loved you鈥檙e reaction to this. You鈥檙e real! And not giving fake reactions to what we can all tell is bad writing and mid acting.
Nah the acting for their ahe is pretty good especially Zuko and Sokka the script at some points is meh yes but that feeling you get in that specific scenes is also in the cartoon you can鈥檛 achieve the same as an animation in a live action for obvious reasons like anatomy that鈥榮 why it seems off to you
I would've also preferred seeing this adaptation from Zuko's perspective. The main storyline is just perfect the way it is.
I have one slight complaint and this might be a Me thing. While we have characters from many different cultures, they all speak as if they are from the mid Western states.
I'm imagining them all speaking with east coast accents now and now I want italian food for lunch ty
I know a lot of people are not a big fan of this show but as a big fan of the original cartoon I think they did a great job bringing this to life is it perfect no but I really like what they did especially if there were a lot of changes from the original I鈥檝e watched it a couple of times already and I really appreciate it and now that my family will be able to experience one of my favorite shows
Unfortunately the problems with this show don't get better over the course of the season; even as a huge fan of both animated Avatar series, I don't recommend continuing. To my eye, this adaptation seems way more like a cash grab trying to capitalize off of nostalgia and visuals than a meaningful addition to the franchise. They could have spent way less money and tried to adapt other stories -- seeing the post-Aang or post-Korra comics or the Kyoshi/Yangchen novels animated could be really cool! -- but we are for some reason stuck with this.
I'm seeing a lot of fans of the animation version who seem to want a 1 for 1 remake. That makes no sense to me. If you love the original so much, you can always watch it again. A different medium opens up new possibilities. Adaptation, by definition, means change.
I'm getting a lot of the same vibes you are. I haven't seen beyond this episode yet as I like to take my shows in a little slower rather than binge so I can't say if it gets better or not.
Hope everything is going to go well with your medical procedure, sending good vibes!
House of Cards is a great watch
for me personally this is a concept show, i like it, the world building in the sets are incredible, the outfits, the only issue has been the line delivery, just throws me off, but the rest is cool, my young niece is watching it with me and she really likes it, but i get that you wouldn鈥檛, 2025 is next year, and we get a new avatar season and movie, hellllll yeahhhhh
I totally agree. The line deliver throws me off.
For God's sake, didn't you just do this show? You devoted weeks to ATLA already, and now we have to do it all over again just because it's a live action adaptation? Not everybody is into anime, and last time we had to spend weeks with barely any content except the friday movie. Do we get a say in this at all? [EDIT] Best wishes on a problem free procedure and a fast recovery, Nat. We all love you out here in Patreonland, and we want to keep you around and in good health.
it was Korra, and the last episode was in November...Avatar was years ago
Sokka鈥檚 actor took me the longest to see him as the character tbh 馃槄 but I鈥檓 5 episodes in and I鈥檝e fell right back into the swing of it tbh Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh is PERFECT casting tho (icon) and Dallas Liu as Zuko pairs so well with him, a lot of their scenes are my favourites so far lmao 馃ス the Gaang鈥檚 performances vary, but Aang is adorable and I鈥檓 not gonna hold it against the child actors It鈥檚 interesting to see how they鈥檝e incorporated the stories from the animated series into live action, it seems like they take 2 or 3 episodes of the OG and blend them together in a way that (usually) makes sense, while cutting some of the filler (rip great divide). Plus seeing things we didn鈥檛 get to see in the animation, like Sozin exterminating the air nomads 馃槶 is cool! Obviously it doesn鈥檛 hold a candle to the original, and it won鈥檛 stop me going back to it, but I鈥檓 enjoying seeing the story told in a different medium I鈥檓 a slut for good visuals what can I say
Lol no worries if you're not feeling it, Nat. I thoroughly enjoyed the series, but I totally understand people who don't. If you don't continue, there are still so many more series/movies we need to catch you up on!
I for one am very glad that Nat is being critical, and not just blindly praising it because it has visuals and characters that remind her of the original show! Keep it it, Nat!
Transformers trilogy 馃
OMG HELL YEAH!!!
Oh, all right - I'll watch Wonka. Maybe I won't hate it as much as I suspect I will! :-) #IfYouInsist
I'm 2 eps in on the Airbender show and can't decide if I'm "in" or not. I find it is great in some ways but also a bit so-so in other ways (some of the acting for example is, a little "lacking"). I will persist at least through season 1 - its good to learn the lore etc of a show that I would never have got around to watching in its toon version. I do get the impression that toon ATLA is very much a show aimed at kids (and people who like that type of thing, which is really not me). And live action ATLA tries to maintain that kid-friendliness, while at the same time 'adulting' it somewhat. Not sure if they can actually walk that tightrope.
nah... if you are going to learn the lore, you should watch the original. its a much much better show over all.. . and not necessarily aimed for kids despite being on Nick. I first saw it when I was 38 and it became my favorite show beating out the likes of Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc.
Severance, please. You won鈥檛 be dissapointed. Also just one season for now. Season 2 is (hopefully) coming this year.
this show seems kinda unnecessary to me. it just feels underwhelming? it's not nearly as bad as the movie, but it still isn't great imo
I haven't seen it yet, but like you said, if you're not feeling it, it's probably better to watch something else. There are tons of great shows around (like Severance, Andor or Barry), you spending time on something you don't even enjoy doesn't help anyone.
I agree with Severance. Not enough people reacting to that show.
Its definitely different, I still hope you continue till the end. Its a nice adaptation, not 1 for 1 but good nonetheless and definitely a palate cleanser from that movie that doesn't exist from 10 years ago
The show is missing 1 major thing. The silly goofy humor of Sokka and Iroh, the kids performance is directors fault.
Wow, Nat is super-critical of teen actors... I liked Sokka. I dont think there's a perfect version of this adaption. But this show has a cartoonish quality like watching a musical. You have to suspend disbelief when a cartoon becomes live action
im only on episode one, but im enjoying it. yeah some things dont really connect, but i can see past its shortcomings for now
Good luck with your procedure this week, Nat. Get well soon!!!!馃馃馃
Good luck with this week鈥檚 procedure!! 馃挍馃挍 Yeah, the show has a lot of issues. Character鈥檚 characterization changes, swapping characters and episodes around. Some extra scenes are really good, others make no sense. Some characters being added in are either pointless to the story or are repetitive because there鈥檚 nothing for them to do. I did enjoy watching the show, the cast was great, the visuals were fun, and the costumes were amazing, but the narrative structure was changed just enough that it constantly bothered me. The first two eps and the finale are the best eps really. At least they鈥檙e the ones with the least changes.
too bad, I liked it
Katara's actress is incredibly stiff, her delivery is just so bland for a character that's supposed to be high energy.
Its bad bad with her
Yeah this show was not great. Why people blindly voted for it without seeing it, it was the worst of the 3 poll options. They crammed all 20 episodes of season 1 anime into 8 episodes of live action. Not a good idea. When something is so bad its hard to watch, they really screwed it up.
I mean true, but cramming it all into 8 eps wasn鈥檛 really the problem, that aspect of it was fine and could have been done much better, if each Ep had been made to be at least 60 + credits, each episode would have had enough for 3OG eps to fit inside. Take away some scenes and stuff that doesn鈥檛 work in live-action, and add in the extra scenes, and it would have been fine. The problems were the writing and characterizations of some of the characters, and the moving characters and plots all over the place without the need for that to happen. Eight 50 something ish minute episodes would have been fine if the story had all been in order and those specific characters weren鈥檛 diluted.
Honestly, Sokka is my favourite thing about this show. Yes, he is less goofy and the writing is not good but I like his dry sarcastic humor. Katara is awful. She has one and a half facial expressions, the body language of a wet blanket and a single way to say her lines.
Katara feels to me like the ember island version but with less expression. its sad
If they really felt they had to make a live action avatar series, they could have gone with any past avatar and told a new story, even kept Aang but filled in time between ATLA and Korra when he was older. Any number of things that wouldn't have been directly comparable to the original series and avoided requiring a bunch of child actors trying to replicate some of the most beloved characters from TV. Hopefully this watch along won't be too painful, but they did get one thing right in that no matter what they put out with this IP people will watch it regardless.
Yeah thats about right. Its tough to watch, especially if you are a fan of the original. But even if you detach yourself from the original and take it as its own thing (even though its not its own thing) then its just meh... its not awful... it has its moments... but if you are going to remake or remix a damn near perfect masterpiece, you can't put out something thats "not awful"... I will say that it gets a little better, but it gets worse before it does.
i will be hate-watching with you nat lol
I have a lot of the same problems as you with the dialogue and some of the acting, fingers crossed the kids settle into the characters and can emote a bit more realistically in future episodes. I did really like the additional time with the Airbenders and seeing the actual assault on the Southern Air Temple.
I don't think I've ever seen Nat so quite during a reaction. It's like my mom always said "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything" 馃ぃ
I heard it gets really good after episode 3 so maybe stick it out but it really up to you. Also IGN gave Shogun a 10 and hearing you loved the first episode at the premiere makes me excited to see this show.
The live action was....fine... like it definitely wasn't as bad as it could've been, but nothing really blew me away either. It definitely was tonally odd as it was simultaneously tried being more "adult" with leaning into darker tones, while also being simpler as they removed almost all subtlety and need for thought.
As somebody who has never seen the cartoon, I'm really enjoying this show, I think it's really fun and visually impressive. I'm not shocked nat don't like it much so far, she always goes into films with a more critical mindset which I guess is a byproduct of working in the film industry. If this show is sort of mimicking the kids cartoon, I'm not gonna expect the writing to be all serious here in the live action either.
I STRONGLY advise to watch the cartoon first. but if you decide against it (maybe you should haha) i am very interested on your opinion on the original show. the original show is so great, but i wonder how someone watching the adaptation first thinks about that
Also Book 1 was never everyone's favorite.
It's just such a mixed bag. It does some things absolutely amazingly. I loved some of the choices they made. I also hated some of the choices they made. And some of it was just very mediocre and bizarre. Ultimately, I gave it a rating of 7/10 because there's potential here, but at the end of the finale, most of what I was thinking of was the unfulfilled potential.
It's pretty mid. Some moments are cool but the a lot of it feels like a soap opera. The writing is pretty bad. Iroh sounds like he's reciting lines from a fortune cookie. It's official Netflix should stay away from live action adaptations. What a waste of potential. They don't realize the reason these shows are so loved is because they're animated.
i disagree with how shows like these are loved because theyre animated. i strongly believe a great live action adaptation can be made. its just very difficult. i personally hope big studios keep trying haha. maybe in 30 years we'll be there
Excited to dive into the show with you once I get a proper internet connection again! - Gonna try going into with as open a mind as I can and trying not to compare it to the original and hopefully that will let me enjoy it more than I'm currently expecting I will :D
HYPED
Yes!!!! I love this show so far. I hope you can stick with it
I watched the entire show in 1 day, is actually really good and also noticed many people forget how the first season of the original show actually was and many reactors weren't sure of keep going after the first episodes of the animated version. Now, the story gets better but you have to remember that this is not a live action version of the show but a different version of the idea and many reactors kept crying and being in shocked for the last 7 episodes even as they know how the story goes.
Though seriously, the live action is kinda iffy, but the finale is AMAZING Also the guy playing Zuko nails the performance this season. If we get more seasons, I think he鈥檇 be able to pull off Zuko鈥檚 arc.
It's not as bad as people are making it out to be! I do understand diehard fans are not happy with specific details in the outcome, but if you go into it with a mindset that separates it from the animated counterpart as a new thing that stands on its own, it's not as bad. I think they got a lot more right than they did wrong! Just my opinion.
I personally didn't like this live action adaptation and since you said on your live stream a few days ago that you didn't like this first episode hopefully this series takes the spot of the bad movies so we can get 2 good movies and this show instead of 1 good movie, 1 bad movie and this show
Nat isn't watching 'bad movies' lol, just movies that aren't as keyed into pop culture/aren't as blockbustery.
More power to you Nat i lasted only 2 episodes before i opted out. The orignal is just right there and so much superior. Lookingforward to wonka tho.
Blue eye samurai!! Blue eye samurai!!
happy monday nat hope you had a wonderful weekend . i tried watching the first episode on the weekend and couldnt finish so wont be torturing myself by trying again so sorry wont be watching this today but those that do hope you enjoy guys
Happy Monday Nat. Hope you had a great weekend too. After your livestream comments about ATLA, I'm approaching this show with caution, but you are quite right to move on from the show if it's not up to scratch. Too much other good content for you to watch instead that's more deserving of your valuable time. Hope everything goes well for you this week Nat 馃挍
I don't think you should watch I can tell it's not for you. I'm enjoying it but that's only cause I know they rushed because of the pandemic. Book 2 will better. It's difficult to watch but it does have its moment.
