Been a YouTube subscriber for years! You're my absolute favorite reactor. Thanks for watching this move with me😉

11 years was the transmission time due to the speed of light. From Grace's perspective, the trip takes a little over 4 years each way due to time dilation (special relativity) because his ship accelerated at 1.5g reaching a speed of 92% the speed of light. So it was 4 years from his perspective, about 13 years from Earth's.

So Adrian was a planet, it was green. Adrian's star/Sun, Tau ceti, wasn't green. :-) Adrian was that system's Venus. The planet the astrophage went to breed.

Hail Mary, full of Grace. I absolutely love the book. I've read it 3 times. And now I've seen the movie 3 times. So good. Andy Weir has said there is a reason the other astronauts died, but he's saving it for if he ever does a sequel. The scenes where Grace is floating in the sea of red dots was done practically, with red lights on wire. They did build near full Mary rocket, at least the living spaces and where he needs to space walk. So much behinds the scenes to watch. Great stuff. I did feel like we were missing some of the science in the story, and how desperate the situation was on earth. I recommend reading the book to fill in some of the gaps. Ok, I'll shut up!

It's an amazingly wonderful movie. I'm glad you enjoyed it (although I'm not surprised). You wonder how you can fall in love with a talking rock, and then, whoomp, there it is. This is definitely one of those movies that is going to get a LOT of repeat viewings.

So, the Astrophage can resist the Solor wind and extreme temperature of the Sun, but is killed by a needle and alien bacteria. And if they can double the amount of Astrophage they have every 8 days, why not wait for the next launch window, give yourself hundreds of times more Astrophage you need for a round trip at near the speed of light and get the mission done in a fraction of the time? Good film, but as was pointed out, it means nearly every star in the Galaxy will be extinct in a few generations.

The second question was explained in the book. The ship traveled at 92% of the speed of light. The maximum theoretical speed is 100%, but the fuel required to increase your speed increases exponentially. At some point doubling the fuel doesn't get you there any faster. Also, it takes a massive amount of energy to "enrich" the astrophage so doubling it isn't so easy. They turned the Sahara desert into a solar farm just to get the energy for the fuel they had.

The book is just as amazing as the movie. And it hurt just as much in the book when you think Rocky has died. In fact I was so upset I slammed the book shut and literally threw it across the room. I was UPSET lol. But I pushed on and it is one of the best books I have ever read and now it's one of my favorite movies ever. And one of my favorite reactions ever. This was so much fun to watch with you Nat! Thank you!

I listened to the audiobook and called out "RYLAND, SAVE HIM!!" and started sobbing. Never had anything like this happen to me before, I was SO invested.

A few things to clear up in terms of the science that you missed: 1: The Astrophage and the Petrova Line do not emit radiation, they block it. So Grace wasn't exposed to radiation while he was out collecting the first samples. It's also why Rocky was the only Eridian to survive the trip to Tau Ceti. He was the crew's engineer, so he was always in the engine room where all of the Astrophage fuel was. 2. The Astrophage doesn't turn stars green, only dims them. They collected samples from the planet, Tau Ceti-E, now named Adrian. It's this solar system's "Venus" where they migrate to breed. (Whoop! There it is!) It just happens to be colored green. 3. The reason for the ETA of Grace's return trip to Earth taking 4 years instead of 11 years is because of relativity. The ship will still technically take 11 years total, but he'll experience time faster since he's traveling near the speed of light. It's impossible to go faster than the speed of light, no matter how much fuel you have. 4. You're right, it would be nearly impossible for Grace to find Rocky's ship (Blip A) again in space. The book goes through an entire chapter in great detail about how difficult it is and how Grace was able to figure it out. The montage only showed a few glimpses of how he got around to finding it. You might have missed it, but we see him turning the ship around and temporarily firing up the spin drives to have a lot of IR light shooting out in roughly the direction where he thinks the Blip A should be. He then turns on the Petrovascope to find if any of the IR light will bounce off Blip A and back to him. It takes him many tries but he eventually spots a flash. And in the book he also uses a stopwatch to calculate how many light seconds it takes for the flash to come back, then he can use math to find out how far away he is from Blip A.

This quickly became one of my favorite feel-good reads when the book came out and I'm so impressed by the movie and the general reception. I'm glad my Rocky tattoo will age like wine, and now people know who it is!

The Martian is one of my favorite "Space Sci-Fi" dramas, and this one has now one-upped it. And no wonder it's by the same guy. So very well done! So happy Nat loved it and was a weepy mess. Weepy Natalie = Emotionally moved Natalie = great reaction.

Book written by the same guy, and the screenplay was also written by the same guy who wrote for The Martian. Drew Goddard.

James Ortiz (the voice actor and chief puppeteer for Rocky) is eligible for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor. Would be so cool to see him get nominated. Also Sandra Huller is having an incredible year, between this, ROSE (where she won an acting prize at Berlin Film Festival), FATHERLAND (which premiered to raves at Cannes Film Festival just a few days ago and won Best Director there) and later in year will appear in the Tom Cruise starrer DIGGER.

Fascinating how quickly you can get attach to a rock creature. After the Martian, now Project Hail Mary what is next for Andy Weir...

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Been looking forward to this all week. I thought it was a really cool movie with a lot of humour, and a lot of heart, and some genuinely awe-inspiring moments. I'm looking forward to watching it with you today Nat 😊 Post - Thanks for your reaction today Nat. After a pretty crap week, just to sit down and enjoy this movie again with you was awesome 💛
