Manual Transmission 5.9 & Handling overhaul

Manual Transmission 5.9

While developing my handling overhaul, the steering feel in Manual Transmission still did not feel entirely right. Specifically the initial force feedback build up as you start cranking the wheel, which still didn't feel communicative enough unless I cranked up the responsivity curve, but that muddied away finer details when the steering force was strong.

I dove back into finding a better way and I think this is the best I can extract from GTA V. This update introduces an improved force feedback model, and when paired with the handling overhaul, should push the game to feel pretty realistically. Of course the physics model isn't actual simulation-tier, but this is pretty convincing from my personal experience, when comparing it against titles like BeamNG or AC Evo, on a Fanatec CSL DD 8Nm wheel base.

Changelog

  • Introduce new force feedback model

    • Main steering forces are based on per-wheel tyre forces.

    • Add tunable vertical load component to communicate surface shape and transiant weight transfer (effectively replaces suspension force feedback).

    • Replace old wheel friction effect with tyre scrub, steering rack resistance and viscous damping.

    • Feed force feedback with surface grip information to communicate decreased grip.

    • Improve surface material force feedback effect generation/calculation.

    • The previous force feedback model is still available and can be selected, if that's preferred.

    • Removed AntiDeadForce, use a force feedback LUT if your wheel has force feedback deadzone. Applies to both force feedback models.

    • Improve wheel (re)initialization and force feedback recovery stability.

  • Manual Transmission now supports automatic gearbox hints from BaseAutomaticHints.json and vehicle configs.

  • Automatic gearboxes now simulate sequential-style, double-clutch and torque converter-type modes, which changes how the clutch/throttle interact during shifting events.

  • Automatic gearboxes now can slip the clutch when accelerating from a stop, as to not bog down the engine.

  • Enhanced Steering mode now has an optional slip-angle aware steering angle limiter now.

  • NPC gearboxes may now skip multiple gears on downshifts, for more competitive NPCs.

  • Cruise control now supports throttle input to allow accelerator override.

  • Cruise control now ignore clutch input, to allow manual shifting while cruise control is active.

  • Cruise control commanded throttle/brake values are now displayed in the pedal info HUD element.

  • Export wheel input state and processed horizontal/vertical camera input through the script API, for camera-script integration.

Fixes:

  • Fix clutch bit point not used properly for engine lockup, engine braking, RPM behavior with clutch bite point and hill gravity.

  • Fix swapped y/z axes in reported UDP telemetry position/velocity/direction vectors.

Minor changes:

  • All decimal values in the menu now accept keyboard input for quicker editing.

Notes:

  • The new and previous force feedback models have separate tuning settings.

  • Remember to set the wheelbase maximum torque to your wheelbase's rated torque so force feedback scales properly.

5.9.1

The initial 5.9.0 release contained a few problems, this has been resolved. 5.9.1 is attached to this post and is available through GitHub also. Thanks you for the quick responses!

Changelog of 5.9.1:

  • Fix new FFBv3 model not working on Legacy

  • Fix FFB being broken on MOZA wheels (Revert FFB playback to more compatible method)

  • Fix FFB shutdown keeping game process open

"Project Skill Issue" handling overhaul

The reason I updated Manual Transmission with a new force feedback model is this handling mod. Unhappy with the lack of mods that implement my observations about GTA V handling and what values would feel good for a steering wheel, I set out to do it myself.

The result is a handling overhaul that addresses all ground-based vehicles to have

  • realistic drive train values, using all my vehicle performance/drivetrain scripts

  • traction values which feel intuitive on a steering wheel

The handling overhaul is free to download here from GTA5-Mods.com.

It is open to feedback and more refinement, more details on the 5mods page.

Script Hook V uses xinput dll, please follow its specific instructions for Enhanced.

I've downloaded this ,turbo fix and custom gear ratios I've got the license but when I boot up the game and go onto story mode it crashes, any idea why?

TurboFix/Custom Gear Ratios/Custom Torque Map are back on 5mods. Grab those newest versions.

The version of this mod is not compatible with the newest luke ross vr mod

I wonder what his VR mod edits then, this should be pretty separate stuff.

Hi ikt, After updating Manual Transmission from 5.8.5 (edfd15ba) to 5.9.0 (c4184578), I lost all physical force feedback on my MOZA R9. Steering, pedals and driving still work, and FFB is enabled in the settings. Setup: - GTA V Enhanced, executable version 1.0.1158.16, offline Story Mode. - Windows 25H2, build 26200.9457. - MOZA R9 (steering and FFB on lX); separate Fanatec CSL Elite Pedals LC V2, ODDOR handbrake and P2000 Haptic. - Modded installation with Drive V, Custom Gear Ratios, Custom Torque Map, TurboFix, InversePower, a custom VR ASI and a custom powertrain helper. Full ASI inventory is attached. Tests and results: 1. Installed the 5.9.0 release while preserving existing settings. No FFB with V3. 2. Switched to V2 (FFBModel=0) and reinitialized the wheel. Still no physical FFB. 3. Rebooted the PC. Other games have working FFB; GTA with 5.9.0 still did not. 4. Closed GTA and replaced ONLY Gears.asi with the previous 5.8.5 binary, keeping the current settings, resources and other mods. Restarted and tested a Schlagen on the Sandy Shores runway: physical FFB returned, confirmed by driving/turning the wheel. In 5.9.0, Gears.log reports successful FFB initialization and "Force feedback effects restored after device acquire". Built-in V2 telemetry contains nonzero final_post_lut_directinput_magnitude values even while the wheel felt empty. This demonstrates calculated output, not necessarily successful delivery to the wheel. This suggests a version-dependent issue with my setup, but I have not reproduced it in an MT-only installation or isolated the exact cause. I am using 5.8.5 as a temporary workaround. Thanks for the detailed information. Could you please head to my Discord? I've got a test build to analyze what happens with a toggle to restore the previous force feedback playback mode.
