Bootleg remixing a famous D&B song: didn't go as I had planned, but I made it a win (DAW/production + ethics video)
So some months ago, I made a bootleg (uncommissioned) remix of a very classic 90s D&B song.
I made it just for fun, and I sent it to the producer.
It went better than expected, but it also got a bit odd.
An interesting music producer diary entry, this one, and a whole new scenario for me, too, so I wanted to share. Whether you're a producer or just a music fan, this could be interesting.
This is a bit of a "When you're handed lemons, make some juice" type of situation.
Let's talk production ethics and check out sound design stuff and my DAW project
I'm going through tools and thoughts relating to having to remake a few sounds.
Video is 20 minutes long. Drum and bass is the name of the game!
Oh and I got a little pep talk from Darude, the man behind Sandstorm in this context, which means planets are aligned well!

<3 - I like yours more than the OG - the bass stab is way more dirty & better for my opinion
Thank you dude!
Fascinating. I've done a little bit of this where I was worried about sample clearance and my top tip is dropping the sample into Synplant which gives a fully tweakable synthesised version of the sound, that is often still pretty close to the original.
I really enjoyed watching this, and I feel the same way about trying to recreate samples. (I know I need to try doing this more, because I love a good remix/remake, and flipping old samples has been really motivating for me this year.)
Nice tune! Opens up some interesting questions though. Sure, you're not going to be directly sampling the original any more but the fact that you've openly copied the sounds and bassline kind of leaves you open to claims of plagiarism, no? I hope not because what you've made is dope.
IMHO sounds like this have been heard in DNB for 30 years. That menacing pad…heard it in so many tunes. Reese bass? DNB staple. I’d understand plagiarism in pop music and with lyrics and melodies or riffs but stuff like this? Wouldn’t be worried.
This was a really interesting one. Thanks for sharing!
Solid tune! I'm looking forward to hearing the whole thing.
Thanks for this. Can you show the subby intro bass 🔥🔥🔥
I’ll add this to my list (not on my computer but it’s prob something I created with Phase Plant)
This is one of my favourite things about trying to produce music. With the exception of lugging hardware around, it's purely a mental game. So for any obstacle there is a way past, if only you can think of it. Nice video, thanks
Thanks for sharing this man. Really enjoyed it and appreciate the brutal honesty.
Glad you liked it Louis!
Bad!
Thank you ✌🏻
