Update on things

Hey ya'll, it's been a while since I've written an update on things, so let's do just that.
Finishing a rare week off, and been able to look at things from a distance, and wanted to put a few thoughts together about going forward.

❗️First, a biggie before anything else: I've just edited and organised the MIXING AND MASTERING COLLECTION, and it now has 79 posts about mixing and mastering, so take a look at that one for audio engineering posts!

📈 First, I'm super grateful for the growth: I've been running this page non-stop for 5.5+ years now and it's definitely got further than I anticipated. It started as a test: I was posting tips on socials a lot, which was fun, but often resulted in lots of free help requests, and someone suggested trying out Patreon, which clearly has a monetising angle: you post good content, and you get paid for it – sounds fair, and it is (unlike Youtube in a way: you may blow up and earn, but few do, and many burn out trying).
I said then I'll give it a few months, and that few months was all I needed to see.

📂 I've stuck to my guns and kept 98% of my output here for paying members only (I do not create content for free members), and I'm not planning on changing that.
Having made music for 30+ years, releasing for 20+, and engineering for others for 11+, I feel fine asking to get paid for content. Someone said if you always post free content, that's what people expect, and that stuck: that's like Youtube.
If you want to see my content, become a paid member: living off of what I know has always been a goal and a thing of mine, and it's working, so thank you to anyone who's supporting me. It's extremely hard to pull off: you need tons of work, knowledge, and sticking to your guns.
Paying members is as a signal: we appreciate you, so please create more.
I have tried to keep the content tier pricing so low that anyone in the world could afford it (there's similar content services where monthly rate is much higher).

👤I understand I have followers here coming from several angles: some want to see music production stuff, some mixing, and I definitely have a jungle/DNB follower base, but also those who appreciate me as an audio engineer in the house music world (I do engineering on many styles, but it's house music where I'm by far the biggest in terms of reputation and demand). Will keep covering all of those.
Let me know what you'd like to see.

📺 I will keep offering content on everything I know of and am good at: DNB/jungle production, breakbeats, engineering, tech house, and that sort of stuff.

🎛️ Ableton will stay as my main DAW as that's where I'm the fastest and most convenient, and there's not much it doesn't do at this point, so expect things to happen in Ableton the most, while most of what I do is universal and not DAW-specific per se.

📝 Some things you should be expecting

DNB/jungle production.
That's where my roots are, and that will never change. It's autumn, and days are getting shorter and darker, and I'm back on making DNB and jungle (after having just released a hip hop beat tape). Working on a chopped old Fanu style track as we speak, and I'll prob cover some stuff around that (sound choices, mix choices, etc).
Earlier this year, I took a hiatus from DNB, but it felt good, and had to do that for a reason.
I have a lot to show and say. Let's make an absolute sick Amen, Tramen, etc.
DNB is very processing/engineering-centered in a way, so that's why I love it.

Mixing / mastering / audio engineering (click HERE for 70+ posts on mixing)
My daily bread. I do this every single day, and it's the thing I'm great at (see a mix/master portfolio HERE).
I often get questions from members regarding topics, and I keep a list of things to go thru.
Coming soon for example: mastering a popular tech house song (what to listen for before mastering, where I think where it had to be improved, what was great and what I shouldn't touch etc).

Breakbeat of The Month will continue (click HERE for 12 episodes so far)..
Simply. Breakbeats are the shieeet, and they kinda made me, so expect more. You'll get downloads and info on breaks history etc.

Advice and tips to artists (click HERE for episodes so far).
I've enjoyed talking about motivational/artist stuff, and that's been received better than I thought, so more of that will come.
Your artist path, how to shape your sound as a producer etc.

Samples (see HERE for 25 posts containing samples for you)
I've always been making sample-based music, and that will not change.
A new load of samples for you guys is overdue, and that will come.

Personal feedback/assistance tiers
These are sold out most of the time, and sometimes there's 1-2 slots left for those tiers: I can't currently offer more, so keep an eye out for a free slot if you want it.
I can't offer more – I'm at absolute max capacity with everything I do and offer.
If you are not on a personal tier (the top 3 tiers), I do not offer help via DMs regarding questions on anything (plugins, mixing etc).
I get DM questions about plugins, mix feedback etc., but I've only ever offered that via personal tiers, and those alone keep me very busy (very grateful for all that)!
Feel free to ask Qs on two chatrooms only visible for paying members: there's a general chat where we share thoughts and tips etc, and one for posting your music to get feedback from community.

Anyways, that's all for now. Massively stoked about how well things have gone.
Definitely have a creative period going on here, and a whole lot of content will be coming (after doing it 5.5 years non-stop, it's probably a given, but just so you know, ha!).

Leave a comment and let you know how you're doing, where you are from etc.

Whether you are a paying member or a free one, wanna hear from you all ✌🏻☺️
Let me know what you'd like to see.

I appreciate ya'll!

-Janne

You give a lot here and I appreciate this deeply. Not always I have time time for everything. Breakbeat of the month, DnB/Jungle production, mixing are my 3. Also would be great to get inside in your approach on mastering. Last but not least: Live! (I am through all your tuts, ha!)

Always appreciate you and your mentorship fanu! I'm from the tech / trance / progressive world and mixing all those dreamy bits can be a painnnn. Your videos are helping me refine my mixing approach

It's a fun time to join - it seems like you are reaching the point where the effects of compound growth become visible to the naked eye, if that makes sense. There's so much good stuff here.

Have to say there's nothing else quite like breakbeat of the month out there. Keep going!

I’d love to see more videos on mixing drums, I’ve been using Thin Line as a reference for a while and it still doesn’t make sense to me how you achieved that sound

Yo Austin! Can't remember off the top of my head what I did, but I've always aimed at having nice and chunky mids and lower mids. Thin Line is a good example of a song that's actually quite minimal: it doesn't have tons of sounds, so its elements can be mixed to be quite large, so something to think about in all styles...there's room for sounds. Could actually try and find the project from a backup drive from some years back and see (some plugins prob wont work anymore but could get the overall idea probably).

Respect Janne. Love your Patreon. Nothing else like it. Especially love breakbeat of the month, being a breaks nerd. I’m from Scotland in a wee place called Glencarse and I am a paying member. Keep up the amazing work.

Thanks Janne. You're a very knowledgeable guy who offers great advice with no strings attached on a consistent basis and that's a rare thing in this day and age (sadly). You can count on my subscription for the foreseeable future. Respect
