Advice and tips to musical artists part 3: broken spirit and success [video]

Putting an album out often makes me stop for a quick sec to think where I am at.
Also, someone just asked me what success is.

Here's my thoughts!

I think I wanna cry. To me "success" is just being able to play. I started making dnb late, and after a while between 12 and 10 years ago I finished 10 tracks, put 6 of them on Soundcloud. I was literally happy, and I still like all my songs today even reckoning all their limits. But I was burning-out as a 3d graphic freelance making long-hours at the time and couldn't bare to sit in front of the screen more for making music. So I thought I had to find a way of playing live-sets to be able to distantiate myself at least a bit from mouse+keyboard. Boy was I wrong, I couldn't find a way to do that. I fell in the "programming my controller" loophole with Bome MIDI translator. And I never was able to close a song again. I'm still in the same process today. I don't work infront of a monitor for 12 hours anymore, I work in a warehouse and I come back home destroyed every day. Success still looks like being able to play, which for some reason I'm not. Something has broken. I love the music and I "don't like" myself for not being able to finish stuff.

Ah, sorry to hear about the challenges! If it's any consolation, I don't get to work on music THAT often myself: most workdays, due to the nature of my work, I'm (musically) worn out. I can maybe touch something for 30-60 in the evening, but most proper music sessions only happen in the weekends. Life does often get in the way. Hold your head up brotha – I got your back :)

thanks for being so candid and sharing your own story. i can definitely relate. i voluntarily quit for awhile and it felt awful. i came back and things were great for years until i started feeling tired of my fav genre. i've started branching out now and doing a mini reinvention and its been really fun :D

Nice to hear this from you: it's definitely refreshing to change, and I think we all need that. Our relationship with music is something we can't take for granted: sometimes we just need to change a bit to keep it fresh! I think it's common that many of us have a main genre that we may stick to a bit too much, and realising other styles feel good too – and are almost necessary – is refreshing!
