Capcom and DMCA Takedown Policy

Capcom recently took down a Youtube channel (Mr X) that was showcased many mods for Capcom titles. The channel had 290k subscribers. These are the titles for some of the videos that were taken down to get an idea what specifically Capcom sent copyright strikes for:

  • "Resident Evil 4 Remake Ada as Ayane from Ninja Gaiden 4"

  • "I Broke Resident Evil 9 With a Bunny Costume Mod 👀"

  • "Ada Looks Gorgeous in Nikke’s Cooling Suit!"

  • "2B Got a Upgrade – Black Edition"

  • "Claire’s Perfect Mai Shiranui Cosplay"

  • "Ada Wong Turns Into Nyotengu…"

  • "Best Ada Wong Mod Yet? 👀 | Resident Evil 4 Remake"

I'm willing to bet Capcom decided to take down these videos and channel because a lot of these mods were dressing up the characters in sexy outfits.

Capcom has written their own policy for what's allowed and not allowed when it comes to fan-created content, with a focus on video content: https://www.capcomusa.com/video-policy/

Unfortunately, the policy is rather vague. This is the most applicable rule:

  • Inappropriate Content: Using Capcom titles to create video and other content, including mods, that is illegal, racist, sexist, prejudicial to sexual orientation, sexually explicit, disparaging, promotes hate crimes, or is otherwise offensive is not tolerated. On a case by case basis, Capcom reserves the right to take down content that is found to be inappropriate or objectionable, at our discretion.

None of those examples match the video content Mr X was creating for his channel so one can't be completely sure what "otherwise offensive" can apply to.

Various content I've heard Capcom send DMCA takedown notices for:

  • Out-of-bounds exploration of demos of games that haven't released yet.

  • Videos of upcoming, unreleased content (ie, showing footage of a game before it's released or on-disc DLC before it's released).

  • Content related to nude mods (the mods themselves, videos of such mods).

  • Mod showcase videos of characters in sexy outfits (no nudity).

  • Showcases of on-disc, unused data (such as early versions of cutscenes).

  • Fan games, especially ones that attempt to remake RE games.

The vast majority of fan content is left alone, but I advise caution.

That is the Ultra conservative right wing trend now, the new age verification policies in Britain because of Ex-prince Andrew's behavior and in several States of the Union of the US. they are also censoring or just plainly banning many authors and their works of literature. they are intentionally creating an adverse environment for liberal and open minded modders and players, and liberals in general.

>Showcases of on-disc, unused data (such as early versions of cutscenes) Well, because of that i backed up that one Youtube video that showcased all unused dialogues from the Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Well maybe modders need to focus on making outfits for characters without the exaggerated body proportions or physics, and if people want to jerk off there are websites that are specifically designed for that purpose. That being said, I am against companies taking down mods, cause modding games is one of PC's long sanding perks.

I agree, but it's rather hypocritical when Capcom themselves sexualize their own characters a lot in several of their games.
