How to Package and Install Mods for RE Engine Games

There are two methods for packaging mods for RE Engine games that differ slightly based on when the game was released.

LOOSE-FILE MODS

Packaging instructions:

  • Let's say you've extracted a loading screen texture, modified and it has this full path: natives\STM\Gui\ui03\ui0302\TEX_ui0000_04_IM.tex.760230703

  • Put it into a directory so you have a folder structure that looks like this: CoolMod\natives\STM\Gui\ui03\ui0302\TEX_ui0000_04_IM.tex.760230703

  • Inside the CoolMod directory, place a screenshot and modinfo ini file with information about the mod. More info about the modinfo further below this post.

  • Compress the CoolMod folder into an archive using RAR, ZIP, or 7zip.

  • If using RAR or 7zip, it is HIGHLY recommended to compress it with the "solid archive" setting off. This makes it much faster to read individual files from an archive.

Install instructions for older games (before Dragon's Dogma 2, basically any RE Engine game that's from 2023 and earlier):

  • Install Fluffy Mod Manager

  • Run Fluffy Mod Manager and select the game you're modding

  • Drag'n'drop the above archive onto the mod manager install

  • Click to install the mod

Install instructions for newer games (Dragon's Dogma 2 and newer, basically games from 2024 and forward):

  • Same instructions as above, but before installing the mod, do the following:

  • Download praydog's RE Framework

  • Install RE Framework (can be done by dragging and dropping the archive onto Fluffy Mod Manager and clicking on it)

  • Turn on the "Loose file loader" option and quit the game

  • Now mods can be installed via Fluffy Mod Manager. This also lets you install mods while the game is running and this works with every RE Engine title -- old and new

PAK MODS

Packaging instructions:

  • Download RETool (v0.226 or later) and extract it anywhere

  • In the same location as REtool, create a directory with the name of your mod

  • Within that directory, replicate the same file structure you'd see in the main PAK

  • As example, if you're replacing a loading screen image, you'd have this path: REtool_dir\NameOfMod\natives\STM\Gui\ui03\ui0302\TEX_ui0000_04_IM.tex.760230703

  • In the base folder for the mod (ie, the "NameOfMod" folder"), you can insert a modinfo.ini and a screenshot for Fluffy Mod Manager to read

  • Drag'n'drop the "NameOfMod" directory onto one of the Create-PAK batch files to create the PAK archive

  • Note: Use Create-PAK-2023.bat for games that are older than Dragon's Dogma 2 (anything from 2023 or older). Use Create-PAK-2024.bat for newer games, basically anything released 2024 or later.

Install instructions:

  • Drag'n'drop the resulting PAK file onto Fluffy Mod Manager with the appropriate game selected

  • Install mod via Fluffy Mod Manager

Note You can install PAK mods and loose-file mods alongside each other just fine, but note that you can't easily predict mod priority this way.

MODINFO INI

You can place a modinfo ini file with some information about the mod that Fluffy Mod Manager can read and display.

Here's an example of what a modinfo.ini file can look like:

  • name = Beastren with extra long whiskers

  • version = v1.0

  • description = This mod adds absurdly long whiskers to the Beastren race making their charisma stat go through the roof.\n\nImportant PSA: cats are cooler than humans.

  • author = xXxModdingGodxXx

  • homepage = https://www.patreon.com/FluffyQuack

  • screenshot = screenshot.jpg
