The Incubus System Chapter 1549. More Than S*x
Emma’s PoV
‘He doesn't turn around.’
Emma watched Ethan's back beneath the dim bedroom light, her arm resting loosely around his waist.
She knew he wasn't asleep yet.
His breathing was too deliberate, too controlled, as though he were trying to convince himself to sleep. Occasionally, his shoulders shifted before settling again. He hadn't moved away from her embrace, but he hadn't turned around either.
Perhaps he was keeping his promise. Or perhaps he knew that turning around would make sleeping considerably harder.
Emma lowered her gaze.
She wanted to touch him more. Not necessarily because of desire, although that feeling hadn't disappeared. She simply wanted to hold him closer, bury her face against his neck, and enjoy the rare privilege of having him entirely to herself.
Sometimes, Emma wondered what that would feel like.
Having Ethan alone. Not sharing his attention with other women. Not waiting for his responsibilities to release him. Not wondering when another emergency would drag him into the Demon World or the Light Dimension.
Just Ethan. Beside her. Every night.
The thought brought an uncomfortable sweetness to her chest.
She knew her limits.
Ethan was an incubus, and his needs were different from those of an ordinary man. She understood that she couldn't satisfy every part of him alone. She had accepted the complicated relationships surrounding him, along with the women who loved him.
But acceptance didn't mean she never felt possessive.
Tonight, especially, she wanted him for herself.
Perhaps that was selfish.
Emma didn't care. She rarely had opportunities like this, when nobody needed him and no enemy demanded his attention.
Her fingers moved gently across his chest.
For a moment, the memory of their earlier intimacy tempted her to let her touch wander lower. She remembered his warmth, his kisses, and the way he could make her forget everything beyond his embrace.
Her cheeks warmed. She wanted him. But her hand stopped.
No.
Emma slowly drew her fingers back toward his heart.
‘He needs to rest.’
After everything that had happened, he deserved that much.
He had spent the night dealing with angels, protecting strangers, and confronting feelings he'd carried for far too long. Even when he claimed he was finished caring about Heaven's judgment, Emma could see how much reaching that decision had cost him.
She didn't want to demand anything else.
She only wanted him to know he could rest beside her.
“Emma…”
His voice emerged softly.
She lifted her head.
Ethan turned around, moving carefully beneath the blanket until they faced each other. “Do you still want more?”
Emma looked into his eyes. Ethan. Not Damian.
She loved both appearances, but they affected her differently.
Damian possessed a dangerous presence. His sharper features and commanding presence made it impossible to forget that he was a demon prince. Even without his horns or wings, something about him suggested power and authority.
Ethan was different. His face was softer. Kinder. Calmer. He looked like the young man she'd known before understanding the complicated truth behind his existence.
Sometimes, when he appeared like this, Emma didn't want anything passionate. She simply wanted to cuddle him. To hold his face between her hands, kiss his forehead, and remind herself that beneath the demon prince was someone who still appreciated ordinary affection.
She raised her palm to his cheek. “No,” she whispered. “I just want to feel you. Your presence.”
His expression softened. “I'm here.”
Emma's chest tightened. “I know…”
She brushed her thumb over his cheekbone. There was something she wanted to tell him. Something that had been growing inside her since their conversation in the bathroom.
But she couldn't identify it.
Was it worry?
Perhaps.
She worried about him whenever he disappeared into another dimension, whenever another enemy appeared, whenever his responsibilities placed him in danger.
Was it happiness?
That was there too. He had chosen to stay tonight, simply because she'd asked.
Or perhaps it was admiration.
Emma had watched him change. The Ethan she knew had once struggled with his demonic identity, uncertain how to reconcile being human with becoming something demonic. Now he was capable of challenging powerful angels and making decisions that could affect entire dimensions.
Yet something about tonight made her wonder whether that strength had become another burden.
Everyone expected something from him. Celia needed her brother. His friends needed protection. Lust City needed its prince. His father needed an heir capable of standing independently. Even Light Dimension seemed determined to demand explanations for bloodlines and ancient conflicts Ethan had never chosen.
But who allowed him to be tired?
Who told him he didn't need to accomplish anything?
Emma swallowed. Maybe that was what she wanted to say.
‘You don't have to be strong around me.’ Her fingers moved into his hair. ‘You don't need to solve anything tonight.’
She wanted him to understand that he could come to her without carrying answers.
He didn't have to become Damian to deserve her affection. He didn't have to remain Ethan either. She loved the person behind both names. And perhaps that was why she'd asked him to stay. Not because she wanted another night of intimacy. Because she wanted him to experience being wanted without having to give anything in return.
Ethan studied her face. “Emma?” His voice carried quiet concern.
She blinked. Apparently, she'd been staring at him for too long. “Nothing,” she murmured.
He didn't look convinced. But he didn't press. Instead, he covered her hand with his and turned his face slightly, pressing a gentle kiss against her palm.
Emma felt her throat tighten. That simple gesture affected her more than she expected.
He was still thinking about her.
She leaned closer until their foreheads touched.
His breathing warmed her face.
She wanted to tell him everything, but the words remained tangled somewhere inside her chest. Perhaps she didn't need them. Emma kissed him. There was no urgency behind it, no attempt to awaken the desire they'd already agreed to set aside.
She simply wanted him to feel what she couldn't explain.
When she pulled away, her fingers remained against his cheek. “Just sleep, Ethan.”
He watched her for another moment.
Then he nodded.
Emma shifted closer and guided his head toward her shoulder.
He accepted without resistance.
She wrapped her arms around him, one hand resting against his back while the other gently stroked his hair. And for now, that was enough.
