Upcoming Reaction Plans
Hello! I hope everyone is doing well 💜
----
Short Summary (read below for the full waffle!)
Sadly, Angel is wrapping up soon and The Good Place won’t be far behind, so it's time for some new shows! Severance has been recommended a lot and it's likely to replace Angel. I’m thinking Man on the Inside (short, one season) could be my Ted Danson fix once The Good Place is done. I’m also considering diving into something longer like Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, or Veronica Mars. Doctor Who will get its own post later so we can chat properly about it.
-----
We are coming to the end (sort of, but this gal likes to be prepared!) of a few shows. Angel is almost finished and The Good Place is only 4 seasons long so I suppose that will creep up on us soon as well.
I'm going to need a couple of shows to replace them!
Last time when I asked for shorter shows to react to, you all DELIVERED. If it wasn't for that post, I wouldn't have watched The Good Place and I'm sure you all know how much I love it. I will go back and check that post again and see what other hidden gems are there.
So, one show I am ready to commit to and say will be an upcoming reaction is Severance. This has been recommended many times to me and I'm really excited to see what it's all about! Severance will most likely replace Angel.
I still don't have a show to replace The Good Place BUT I've had my eye on Man on the Inside. I think I'll need another Ted Danson fix once Good Place is done! It's a short show, just one season so far and the episodes are 30 minutes long and just checking that info I saw there's a second season coming in November 😅 So I guess that might be a sign to go for it!
Other shows I am considering are Battlestar Gallactica, Farscape and Veronica Mars. Any thoughts on those? I know they aren't short shows, but I think I'm also ready for a longer commitment as well.
I think I want to make a separate post about Doctor Who when we get further along in the series as I want to talk about that in its own post so all the comments are easy to find.
I honestly have tried movies... I just don't know if they are for me. Scream 3 is finally edited (after sitting there unedited for a few months) so keep an eye out for that one. I recently reacted to the original Karate Kid movie as I wanted to maybe react to Cobra Kai but it takes me so long to get movies edited that they end up just sitting there. A possibility is for me to pull back on one or two of the shows per week and have 1 x movie and 1 x show per week and I'd be more likely to be able to manage. So yeah, lots to think of!
Thank you for making it through this post! I hope you have a wonderful day/evening ahead (it's 6:30am here right now) 💜🤗

My list: Dollhouse Veronica Mars Stargate SG1 / Atlantis (this is a long one) Dr.Horrible sing along blog - to have a good evening with songs :)
I'll once again propose "Chuck". Not as well known (There were one or two others recommending last time), and it is somewhat long (5 seasons, but season 1 and 5 were half seasons, so it is really 4 seasons long). Wikipedia calls it an Action Comedy Spy Drama, and that is a pretty good description. Zachary Levi is "Chuck", and two other main actors are Yvonne Strahovski, who is an Australian actress (perhaps you know of her), and Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne in Firefly. I will also note that when a third season was possibly not going to happen, the fans of the show instead of just protesting, figured out that it might be best to appeal to sponsors, and were able to get Subway Restaurants to subsidize the show. Anyway, it was a great show, and I think it is worth considering.
Severance is a good pick. Very reactor-friendly, popular and a fun world. Some other thoughts - Ted lasso is a good vibe replacement for The Good Place. It's a little different from the sorts of shows you usually watch, but it's also about people trying to be good and self-improve. And Severance is pretty bleak, so it might be good to have as contrast. Another one to consider, the YouTube reactor classic - Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's a kid's show, but it has a surprising amount of depth and some truly great character arcs. Several channels were built on the back of reacting to this one, so I would expect it to do good numbers.
Just want to say, if you're worried about withdrawal from the Joss Whedonverse, there's always Dollhouse, to keep it going.
Since there are not enough comments to this post, I’ll add one more. If you wanted another comedy that caters to your particular of the world (although more New Zealand than Australia,) Flight of the Conchords is very funny, quirky, and musical.
I have two long running shows to throw into the ring, both of which are my favourite show of all time, and they have 100 episodes or more, and are — honestly — utterly breathtaking, and fit alongside your longer running shows nicely too. • Fringe, a science fiction show about fringe science. • LOST, about a group of people lost on an island after Flight 815 crashed. And whoever recommended His Dark Materials too! Hope this doesn’t make your job harder but please do consider Fringe, it would REALLY be something I think you’d love based on your Doctor Who reactions, of which I’ve seen almost all of them, I think. Oh, and if you’re looking for a cult classic, Twin Peaks is sublime and utterly brilliant. Wishing you luck!
I'm adding my voice to the Ted Lasso chorus simply because we've seen your heart embiggened by The Good Place and you deserve to have that feeling extended.
Surprise yourself and watch the James Bond films, starting in 1962
TED LASSO. You will love this feel good show
My vote is for Veronica Mars 😁
While you didn’t list it, I think “His Dark Materials” would be a great consideration for you. It’s an extended mini-series with a total of 23 episodes, an HBO/BBC production so the values are high. A really good cast. It’s a YA fantasy adventure, with some magic and SF thrown in. The main protagonist is a precocious 12 year old girl though she comes across as being older and more mature—set in an alternate universe, that follows somewhat different rules. Most striking is “souls” are externalized and take animal form, referred to as Demons (not demonic!). They’re shown in seamless animation overlaid with the live actors and location shots. To say more would be spoilery. I’m as certain as I can be that you’ll love it, and believe the membership would as well given the chance. Streams on Max.
Man on the inside and Veronica Mars sound great to me but lots of good choices in there dont think you can go wrong with whatever you decide 🙂
for something lighthearted and heartwarming that's also really really good and not too long I'd suggest BBC's Ghosts (there are many many version out there, from many many different countries, make sure you go for the original, the British one), you'll love it! 💖
Personally, as an Aussie, I find the American Ghosts better. I tried watching the British one, but didn't really like it which is strange because I usually LOVE British shows (and not just because of their humour lol). Of course it's all personal perspectives 😊
Omg Please do Battlestar Galactica (2004)!!! My 3 favorite shows of all time are Buffy/Angel, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. It's honestly incredible and I wish more people would react to it. Now that I think about it I think I need to add Interview with A Vampire to that list. Probably the best show I've seen come out in years.
Have you seen The Magicians? If so then you're ready for this set of prints! https://www.etsy.com/listing/775768163/unique-pop-culture-prints-buffy-the oh, not affiliated - it's just an incredible combo, like minds and such lol
Hiya' Jules! Normally I comment on YT but I'll be here today. I'm glad you're considering the Man on the Inside recommendation, I'm so excited for S2! As you've been going through TGP I've been putting some thought into what makes you love TGP so much since you've clearly bonded with it (I fear for your emotional state when it ends :( ) So, this might be a bit out there as far as I've seen- and maybe a bit different from the traditional shows you watch- but maybe consider Gravity Falls? It's an animated family-oriented show, but I personally feel it's thematically actually very TGP-coded. Similarities: 1. Episode length and episode total are identitical to TGP, 20 mins and 40 (or 43?) episodes total, so scheduling and editing should be an easy transition 2. Overarching story line with twists that leaves audiences floored 3. Clever dialogue and visual gags 4. An endearing main cast with more character-focused story-telling (this is the main similarity between shows imo, and something you seemed to really care about in TGP) 5. Both have great foreshadowing and clues that make rewatching a joy Differences: 1. Aimed for a slightly more family-friendly audience, about the same demographic as Doctor Who I'd say. 2. The "morals" of the stories are less philosophy-focused (of course) and more "coming of age" style 3. Animated vs live action 4. Though both have more overarching plotlines, GF is more monster-of-the-week where TGP is... well TGP Not that I think you care, but GF does have a pretty large fanbase ala Doctor Who so you might get some people from there. Also I believe it's Disney's highest-rated show ever. Edit: As a comment below me pointed out about a different show (but seemed like a good point to touch on), I would consider GF an "easy watch", you'll enjoy it if you put in a lot of work, or if you just shut your brain off. Also if my math is correct, Man on the Inside S2 will release during your watch of S1, so GF might make a great pallate-cleanser for your very likely post TGP-depression ;) 💕
Gravity Falls was so good!
Battlestar Galactica is *incredible*... however, it is 100% not an easy show to watch. I think BSG and The Good Place are both shows I would describe as "Art". By that I mean I don't think either show exists just to spin a tale for a little while to entertain. Both shows have a point of view, and something to say about humanity and the world we inhabit. And if you were to make a chart that illustrates how "uplifted" you might feel after watching an episode, BSG and The Good Place would be so far apart that the laws of physics would prevent you from placing both on the chart at once. :D BSG hits hard - and fast. And it keeps hitting. And after it's hit you as much as it can, *it doesn't stop hitting*. It deals with many of the most difficult topics you can imagine, and it never pulls a punch. It's full of morally grey people doing morally grey things. Or maybe bad things for good reasons. Or bad things for bad reasons. On the other hand, that's what makes BSG Art. It's possible to learn something about yourself and the world from seeing how various forms of trauma (and BSG explores lots of 'um) affect and change us and those around us. It's a deep and rich story, with distinct and unique characters. It's an experience that is nearly wholly impossible to be repeated by modern TV studios. They just don't have the guts to do something like BSG again. BSG and The Good Place are polar opposites in terms of tone and content, but are both pinnacles of television. Neither are simply content for passive absorption. Both grab the viewer, dragging them forward to the end!
I had to take breaks when I watched it, like months long breaks. But it was good! I think you hit the nail on the head.
One more vote for Ted Lasso, even though it’s not one of my absolute personal favourites (I prefer darker shows with more action), but I know it‘s exactly your kind of show, you would absolutely love it. 🙂
Kevin is right, that's also a great suggestion!
Sapphire and Steel is brilliant. It would also be a nice tribute to the late David McCallum who was in episodes of the original Twilight Zone in the 60s, later Ilya Kuryakin in the The Man From Uncle. The Invisible Man, a short-lived television series, about twelve episodes. In later years, he starred in NCIS as Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard. NCIS chief medical examiner. Sapphire and Steel are not quite ghost stories, usually with a twist in the tale. The main characters are named as elements and is reflected in their appearance. Each has their own particular abilities, but usually work as team-ups. The one compliments the other. we find out about these abilities as we go along. Each character is engaging in their own way.
Another good way of describing it would be as a series of stage plays. Oh there's sfx but it has a certain tone and singular feeling to it. There you could draw comparisons with Twin Peaks with its own set of logic and plenty of weirdness. And i think it was Josef said before no one or almost no one had reacted to it. (Little reacting to Press Gang too!)
Man on the Inside has a little Good Place vibe going on, and a new season is due to start on 20th November. I loved Battlestar from 2004 is a wonderful series. I am currently working my way through Veronica Mars but willing to wait whilst you catch up. I have not seen Farscape though. My recommendation, as before, is Fringe. It is about things that appear supernatural but have a science explanation- the fringe of science. It’s also got a great story running through all the episodes. And there is one character that appears in every single episode that can be really tricky to find at times. It’s a little weird at times but I loved it from start to finish.
It's not everyone's cup of tea but Another Life on Netflix wasn't too bad IMO, also the actor that played Danny Pink is in it too
I stand by my Farscape. I am open to Veronica Mars, which I've never seen. People saying it hits the Mutant Enemy vibes is encouraging. Farscape does this too, mind. BSG is petty awesome drama, especially the cinematography, although the story becomes a mess after the half way point. It's also quite nihilistic in tone which is something to bear in mind. Not at all celebratory like Farscape, or VM seems to be.
Ps well done on 6:30am posting
Battlestar Galactica (from the 70/80s), Farscape and Veronica Mars are good choices. You already know my thoughts of Farscape because of the 1 Doctor Who episode. Personally, Farscape, Battlestar and then Veronica Mars in regards in my thoughts of what you should watch. Not really order, just my vote for 1st and then alternates.
The Who Farscape? Is that a reference to... Re*eng*ing *n*el?
I would love to see Farscape. It's a show I've only ever heard great things about and it's been on my list of things to watch for awhile. Plus, I *think* it has some humor which would provide a nice balance to the more serious (but awesome) Severance. You have a wonderful evening as well, Julie!
Also it's a show cast and filmed in Jules' part of the world and it wears that badge proudly!
Battlestar Galactica is so good. i also think that you should watch the last whedon show, dollhouse. its another shorter one, two seasons.
I love dollhouse. Jules should definitely watch.
You really can't go wrong with Veronica Mars. It's smart, witty and sassy. And Kristen Bell is just perfect. And I know you'll love Cobra Kai - better than the films in many ways.
I understand not caring for movies - TV shows have so much more depth in characters and story lines. That said, I can't recommend Interstellar enough (whether you film a reaction or not). Battlestar Galactica is a great series, but it seems fair to warn it's a bit emotionally draining. I don't want to talk you out of it since it's really good, but it should be balanced with lighter shows. Be sure to watch the 2 part mini-series first. There is also a slight issue that about 5 episodes have extended cuts and the community will never 100% agree on which you should watch (the majority have voted for extended in another channel and I prefer extended too). I've seen a lot of space sci-fi and seem to be one of the few fans of that genre that doesn't care for Farscape. I think there were a lot of reasons, didn't care for the comedy style, found the characters pretty one-dimensional, couldn't get into the villain, maybe too much puppet work for me (nothing like Smile Time!). As someone that like Doctor Who and Star Trek and other such shows I feel like I'm supposed to like it... 🤷 The Magicians is a good replacement for someone that liked Buffy and Angel. I think Schitt's Creek is comedy style that you would enjoy a lot. Good luck with choosing from all of the suggestions!!
Schitt’s Creek is GOLD! Amazing suggestion, I’ve just finished a rewatch haha. Loooove it! Jules would too!
Stargate SG-1
Always ❤️
Huge fan of Veronica Mars for more Kristen Bell. As others have mentioned, it has a Buffy-like vibe
I still think you need to watch 12 monkeys. 4 seasons. Time travel at its finest. Paradoxes, loops, effect before cause etc. Doctor who is not a time travel show, it's a show that has time travel in it. 12 monkeys is a time travel show.
under appreciated show
Roswell (1999) tv show is pretty good
Man on the Inside is lovely, so good choice. Another cute show I think you'd enjoy, and perfect if you want a Kristen Bell fix to go along with your Ted Danson fix, is Nobody Wants This (Netflix). Although I guess Veronica Mars would also be a KB fix and I agree with others that you'd absolutely love it. I also agree with the suggestions of Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn 99, and absolutely 100% you MUST watch Ted Lasso and Schitts Creek.
I am currently watching Severance now for the first time and I think you'll love it. It is very well made and well exercise that part of your brain that tries to figure out what is going on. The Good Place is hard to replace, but here are a few tries: Ted Lasso - The best replacement for that feel good feeling you get from the Good Place. You will LOVE Ted. Was only 3 short seasons and ended, but they just announced they are bringing it back for a fourth. Parks & Recreation - Made by same creator. Also feel good. Not as serialized and 7 seasons so it is quite the commitment, but also think you would love it. You would also love Ron Swanson. Arrested Development - The Good Place is one of the most clever shows out there. In terms of humor, Arrested Development may match it. Unbelievably well written comedy. Veronica Mars - Spiritual mix of Buffy and Good Place. Same star of Good Place and same vibe as Buffy. Joss Whedon even has a cameo in it. Also, it is a great show to fuel your desire to predict what will happen. Other thoughts: Battlestar Galactica - One of my favorite shows of all time. It is bleak, so prepare for that. It has recently gone off streaming. I own it, so no big deal for me, but others may have trouble watching along. Also you HAVE to watch the two episode mini-series before season 1 or you will be lost. But it is a beautiful and impactful show. Arcane: An animated (it is not anime) show might be interesting. It is the best show I have ever seen visually. And has one of the best fictional characters I have seen in a long time. It is only two short seasons. It is griping, well made, emotional, and incredibly unique. Cobra Kai - You would have to watch the other 2 Karate Kid movies for it to make sense. It is a show that starts off a lot of fun, but I feel there was a major quality drop off by the end.
Oooooooooo!!! Battlestar and Veronica Mars are two of my absolute favorite shows!!! But if you're looking for comedy, the same creator/writer of Good Place, also created Brooklyn 99 and Parks & Rec, so you might try those as well!!
There seems to be so much awesomeness to choose from! Writing those two down in my little notebook 🥰
Oh! Another thought on a surprisingly lovely movie Secondhand Lions. Besides the previous mention of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Showwsss…. Battlestar is…harsh Veronica Mars has its moments of fun but also some very dark stuff is in there as well Farscape was fun but lost my interest in the later seasons… Community is a lot of fun Red Dwarf, sci-fi, amusing, occasionally deep, you can sing along with the theme song, hehe 🙃 For your personal enjoyment you might like Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple (also known as Marple. 2004-2013) with your viewing of Doctor Who, you will recognize an insane amount of Brit actors! And even if familiar with the stories they put in a few twists. Not to mention the gorgeous costumes and scenery, real places! It’s a comfort show of mine. ☺️
You've basically just given spoilers to a couple of those shows.
I've not seen Veronica Mars or Farscape myself but I've always heard good things about them. BSG I have seen and it's actually one of all-time favourites.
A solid replacement for the Good Place is Schitts Creek. It is a little longer coming in at 6 season of 13-14 episodes, but they are short episodes at under 30 minutes. Also for a sci-fi replacement I can't recommend Fringe enough. It's 5 seasons (100 episodes), but full length 40-45 minutes long. It's a bit like X-Files meets Angels with a sprinkling of Doctor Who for good measure 😂
Schitts Creek is totally up her alley I think. Good suggestion.
Hopefully Doctor who is continuing lol. Looking forward to seeing Severance. Torchwood is a good short series. I'll throw out the inbetweeners too. Incredible short comedy series. Exciting times ahead
I've got a couple of shorter suggestions for light hearted stuff. 1. Robin Hood (BBC 2006, 39 Episodes): A fun take on Robin Hood. One of the things I like about it is that Robin, returning from the Crusade, now hates killing. So while he's an amazing archer he doesn't want to kill people. 2. Coupling (BBC 2000, 26 Episodes): Revolves around 3 guys and gals and their times dating inside and outside the group. Honestly, haven't seen a funnier sitcom.
Ah Couplings over-rated! Sorry :) I've been reflecting a way lot on Moffat"s Press Gang in light of him being far funnier when he combines drama with comedy. Doctor Who is a good case in point. I'll lay odds the best Couplings are those with increased dramatic beats.
Looking forward to the final reactions to Angel. I think you'd enjoy Farscape a lot and it doesn't get enough attention. BSG is always great too. Whatever you end up deciding on, best of luck and hope you enjoy the series in full.
You would absolutely adore Veronica Mars, 100% guaranteed
BSG, Farscape and Veronica Mars are all great shows. VM is similar in writing to Buffy/Angel if not in style (no supernatural element) but the other show by the same creator, iZombie does have the supernatural and has a similar style, if that's what you're looking for. You could also just watch all of Cheers for plenty of Ted Danson, especially when he was in his heyday. A nice short show you would probably love is Ted Lasso. It's very heartfelt. Anyway I'm rambling. Love you, Juliette!
There's now two comments for Ted Lasso within a few minutes so I am going to do some research 👀 I know nothing of it so that will be fun to check out! It seems I will be sorted for a while to come haha 💜 I can't decide between VM, BSG or Farscape though!!
Man on the Inside sounds like a good choice. I have not seen it myself, but my nephew has recommended it to me. I’ll put in a word for Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It’s a kid’s show, but it’s really good. It’s similar to the Good Place in that the episodes are short (22 minutes), and it can be unpredictable way. Also, it has so many engaging characters whose interactions are fun to watch over time. The show also gets better over time.
I used to watch She-Ra when I was little! That is cool there is a remade version! I am a bit hesitant to react to animation as I've heard they are pretty strict with copyright, but I can check it out. Thank you, Rick 😊
Man on the inside is phenomenal. You'll love it. It's also made by Mike Schur who also made The Good Place.
I reckon it's a definite yes for me!
Veronica Mars is only 4 seasons and a movie. ( There is a watch order, but it's easy.) The main reasons to watch (for you) are it stars Kristen Bell and is loaded with Buffyverse alumni and references. So it scratches that itch nicely.
Geezo I forget about that time difference. As I'm reading this it's nearly quarter to 9 at night on Sunday. It's sad that the Buffy verse is coming to an end for you. But I hope you've been enjoying the ride while you're on it. As for doctor who I can't wait to see what separate post it's getting. I'm a bit nervous cause I'm genuinely enjoying your reactions to the 12th doctor era so I'm hoping you at least see that out 😂😂😂😂
I will continue to wave the flag for Twin Peaks! The first season is only 8 episodes (though season 2 & 3 are longer).
I vouch for Twin Peaks.
I will suggest Ted Lasso to replace the Good Place when it has finished. It's such a good show, and it will hit some of those same wholesome vibes as the Good Place. It's literally a show about kindness.
A show about kindness... I think I'm sold!
