Doctor Who 8x01 Deep Breath
And we are BACK with a brand new Doctor! I know nothing about Peter Capaldi, but from what I've seen so far - he's left me impressed. I love that he is an older Doctor. I feel it's so suitable coming from the 11th Doctor and what he had to endure in the many years leading up to his regeneration. It just feels right to me that the Doctor is weathered and worn a bit.
I am so ready for this season - Geronimo 😊

I couldn’t tell if you finally made the connection to The Girl in the Fireplace or not. It looked like you almost had it when they mentioned Madame Du Pompadour. I could see in your face that it reminded you of SOMETHING, but you couldn’t make that final connection.
Did the Doctor push the droid, or did the droid jump? I like that they made it deliberately ambiguous. Missy draws attention to it in the outro too. And the Doctor himself tells the droid “do not make assumptions about how far I’ll go to protect them.” Some food for thought!
And so begins the era of my favorite Doctor and favorite companion! I love that you caught that the Doctor’s broom metaphor unintentionally reflects his thoughts and confusion about his own identity at this point: after so many faces, so many “replaced parts,” who is he, really 🧹? What sort of man/Doctor is he? He doesn’t know, and we know how the Doctor doesn’t like to not know something. As for Clara, we have started to see a more fleshed out picture of her as a person ever since the “Impossible Girl” arc resolved. Her friendship and bond with the 11th Doctor grew and deepened into something really special and tender across the last three episodes (The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor, and The Time of the Doctor), for one thing. And we’ve also started to see more of her prickly personality shine through. I love the line in the previous episode when she describes herself as “bubbly personality masking bossy control freak” when she’s in the truth field. And in this episode, we got “nothing is more important than my egomania.” LOL. We also see her draw on her experience as a teacher to get out of a tricky situation. (Having worked as a teacher’s aide, I can personally testify that experience working with middle schoolers will more than qualify you to take on villainous aliens, cyborgs, and more, LOL.) So to sum up, we have on one hand bossy, control freak, “5 foot 1 and crying, you never stood a chance,” teacher Clara, and on the other hand, we have this older, less patient, less filters, attack eyebrows, Scottish (“I can be angry now!”), not “a hugging person,” “who frowned me this face,” “I’m not your boyfriend Clara (my mistake, not yours!)” Doctor 🧹. And the question is, what sort of relationship/dynamic will they have? I won’t answer that, but I will say that, to *me*, they are the most fascinating Doctor/Companion pair in all of Doctor Who, and I can’t wait to experience this amazing season with you :)
The detail of 11 becoming Scottish to signify his love for Amelia Pond will always be my favorite. We all do of course but no one misses Amy like 12.
Here we go with my favorite doctor, can't wait to see how you will feel about him as the season progresses, and we get to see more of him.
He has impressed me a lot so far! He certainly has a beautiful way with words!
Well, the moment has finally arrived. After watching all your great reactions up to this point I have finally caught up with you. This is the first reaction I have watched where I don't have the next episode reaction ready to go, I have to wait a week. It feels weird lol. Clearly the only solution to this is you must now do daily Who reactions. Sorry to do this to you but I don't see any other way really...
Heeeyyyy, that is so cool!! I love that you've worked so hard to catch up haha 💜
I loved your thoughts on regeneration and how as you've gotten more experience of the show you've adjusted to the experience more and can appreciate each Doctor as you know you only have so much time with them. It's wonderful to appreciate that while it's always sad to say goodbye to a Doctor, its also exciting to get to see a new one and get to know them. I did enjoy them using Clara as a stand-in for fans who complain that a new Doctor isn't 'their' Doctor and to see her taught a lesson. Steven Moffat actually wanted to cast an older Doctor when he took over the show but was impressed enough by Matt Smith to cast him anyway. Now we get our older Doctor, with Capaldi being the last Doctor born before the show started, and almost certainly will be the last who was born before William Hartnell (the First Doctor) died, which was 50 years ago last month. If that doesn't hammer home how old this show is, I don't know what does ;) It's good timing that they brought up the mystery of who gave Clara the Doctor's number, just as there's a mystery of who put the ad in the paper for them both. I've been meaning to mention the former recently to remind you that there's still something about Clara that hasn't been resolved yet.
I actually love this new feeling I have for regeneration. It's been eye opening, and although I'm still sad to say goodbye... it's more like a feeling of being thankful and appreciating what that Doctor gave us. Which feels similar to the beautiful conversation at the end. The Doctor, standing right in front of Clara, but so invisible. No More. That is true about how Clara got the Doctors number in the first place! To be honest, I'd forgotten about that for the most part with everything else going on haha!
Peter Capaldi is a life long Dr Who fan, he watched it as a kid, there's some great clips from when he appeared on Graham Norton after he was cast where you find out about how nerdy he was lol Check it out it's very funny. So this was a big deal for him to become the Dr so you knew this era would be in safe hands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tyA6sdLq88 - Here you go, don't worry no spoilers, this was aired before any episodes had come out so it's safe to watch!
So here's a fun fact for you: the idea of regeneration was originally meant to be akin to an intense LSD experience (Remember, DW was born in the 60's). The kind where you experience complete ego death and forget who you are only to find yourself again. As 11 said last episode, this is the start of a whole new regeneration cycle, so it's gonna be a whopper! And that's why 12 is SO out of sorts upon regenerating. Moffat/Capaldi executed that post-regen existential crisis/acid trip vibe brilliantly.
i’m so excited for you to watch what’s coming up! i know you’re gonna love it!
My favorite doctor and companion duo! I'm so excited!
I love this!!!
For me, the Twelfth Doctor is the most fascinating of the lot, and Peter Capaldi is perhaps the best actor ever to grace the role. Ten and Eleven looked young and put on a jolly persona, but THIS is the Doctor as he's always been, all masks thrown aside. Weary, battle-scarred, and ruthless when he needs be. Hard as nails. And not always easy to like! As a rather amusing aside, he came to Doctor Who shortly after starring as Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It. I'd suggest watching a compilation on YouTube if you get the time - it has to be seen to be believed.
The tramp that the Doctor steals the coat from is Brian miller, He was married to Liz Sladen who played Sarah Jane Smith. I really like Capaldi's Doctor, although Matt and a future Doctor are my favourites. But it did take me a while before I got use to him as the Doctor.
Oh wow 💜💜 I love that we have that Sarah Jane connection! So cool!
My favourite doctor has arrived.
Capaldi's acting and gravitas can make any episode worth watching. Smith was an excellent actor, but Capaldi is on a whole different level. Same can be said for Michelle Gomez who played the lady at the end of the episode.
Honestly, I think I agree with you! Matt had incredible physical acting abilities, but Peter's voice and delivery is next level!
I think it is probably harder for reactors -- when these episodes first aired the audience had about 9 months of no who in which to grieve and otherwise emotionally process, but you hardly get any time at all before you're watching the next one. I needed a lot of time to be ready to move on and be ready for Capaldi, but once I was he easily landed a spot in a 5-way tie for my favorite.
Yeah, absolutely!! I do like to try to watch ahead, so I can give myself a small break of a couple of weeks between Doctors if a regeneration happens and then work on catching up a buffer zone again 😅
That ending with what 11 says to Clara and the interaction with 12 makes tear up at times. It may start out a little rough, but I think you'll like number 12. Since I'm not sure how to say the rest of I want to say without spoiling anything (or repeating stuff I've said before) and how far ahead you are, I'll leave it at that.
The ending was GORGEOUS 😭😭
so glad you liked this one! peter capaldi just released his second solo album sweet illusions…..that would be an interesting companion (pun intended) to watching his time on the show! he does just a stellar job with the role. enjoy!
WAIT.... he sings??
Welcome to the 12th Doctor Era! It's absolutely superb, even though it starts rough. In this era there are some of the best and also some of the worst episodes (imo) of NuWho. The good thing: it becomes better over the course of his seasons and so it's easy to forget and forgive two really weak episodes in this first season of Twelve. Enjoy the ride, I think you'll come to love the 12th doctor as much as the predecessors. (Wow, I forgot how much happened in just a month's worth of episodes on your channel, so I'm luckily still around when Peter Capaldi arrived last week and now, as he takes his first hilarious post-regeneration steps.)
It really feels like Peter is a superb actor! I know nothing of him, but I'm already impressed. And yeah, it's been a crazy month haha!! Glad you were here 💜
Time for who (no pun intended) I believe is the best Doctor. I'm still not sure if Capaldi is my favourite or not, but he is without a doubt, the best at the role. He takes a bit to get into the role (as does any actor playing the Doctor) but once he gets into the role, boy does he get into the role. There's 2 upcoming episodes I am waiting for you to react to. Everyone knows at least one of the ones I mean. Have fun with 12.
I think I will indeed be having a lot of fun! And probably tears.... and laughs! But he's certainly made a good impression so far! It's too hard to pick a favourite, isn't it 🥹
