Update - 04/12/2023

Hello, and welcome to one of the last updates of the year! Can't believe it's December already... How have you all been? I'm in high spirits because Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne is doing pretty well on Kickstarter. I cannot wait to finally publish the game, especially knowing that I'm going to be able to release a bunch of deluxe copies for it, and cards! Super exciting stuff!

Other than that, this last week I've been busy with more shipping (the shipping never ends... this time ATDW pre-orders, which one would think it's a good thing to have, but since I messed up the shipping rates I'm basically just sending these out for free). I've also made some progress on the first couple of stretch goals for Ker Nethalas (the reference guide is super time-consuming) and the second half of Demonic #2, which will be ready for you guys here on Patreon this month (hopefully among other things). I've come up with some cool rules to play evil characters at the service of an Apostle, or to simply give more options to your antagonists. I'm pretty happy with them! I still want to add the mass combat rules, and depending on space, a couple of other things.

Saturday night I became obsessed with the idea of making a skill-based version of DCC, or at least something really close to that brilliant game. Each time I sit to play DCC I end up playing 1-2 sessions and then just homebrewing the hell out of it, which mostly means adding skills to it, in a variety of ways. Ker Nethalas has made me realize that I don't really care about Attributes (or Abilities, Characteristics, however you want to call them), I enjoy skill-based games and the rest is just unnecessary fluff. So I've come up with a simple ruleset I'm calling Skill20, which is a skill based system compatible with D20 and OSR games. I've been slowly but surely gathering ideas for a strange science-fantasy setting (yes, I know I've said many times that I dislike that sort of settings but Alan Bahr's to blame here, he showed me a few months ago a WIP game with that style of setting and it's just so expansive and full of options), one that I was initially planning on releasing as an OSE setting, but I think I'll just move it into this new ruleset. Whenever this happens, it will be relatively quickly because like I said I've been working on it here and there for months now and I have all the worldbuilding done and plenty of other stuff. I don't know how responsible of me it is to go full ahead with it now considering I have a ton of WIP stuff already, but you guys know me, I'm always drawn towards the shiny new thing... We'll see!

This week I'll continue working on this month's Patreon stuff, the Ker Nethalas stretch goals (those cards are going to be a lot of work... happy to have Glynn Seal on board for it, though), and knowing me, my Skill20 ruleset and the derived game. I expect it to be a busy one!

As a last thing, please share the Ker Nethalas campaign with friends and family, I really want this thing to grow! I have cool stuff planned ahead (among them a new section of the necropolis written by Alan Bahr!), and tons of ideas for the future, I would love this game to be as big as it can be!

Have a great week!

Check out Castles and Crusades (siege engine system). This is Gary Gygax' answer to 3rd edition, and it features skills. Late 2nd edition had Skills & Powers (D&D 2.5 if you will), and C&C was the natural progression of that system. Anyway, it's worth a look as you research skill based systems. -It's like they finally learned something from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 😆

I've also wanted to grab that game but I never saw any mention of skills so I always skipped it. In any case, it still has Abilities and Ability scores, and I want to get rid of that. As a matter of fact, I already did! I took all my notes from all my DCC attempts and I'm putting together an SRD. It will be out this week, most likely! In any case, thanks so much for the recommendation, I'm definitely grabbing a copy ASAP!
