Update - 30/01/2023
Hello, how's everyone doing? I hope you had a nice weekend and are ready to start a new week! I've been super busy as usual; I'm still sick so it's pretty annoying, I think I need to go to the doctor again because I never get sick and this has been going on for too long now. The good thing about it is that I'm all the time home, which means more work gets done!
As you can imagine, I've been focused on Riftbreakers. I think I've mentioned it before, but there are no levels in this game, instead we have Ranks: Novice - Apprentice - Veteran - Master. As you would expect, you start at the Novice Rank. This means that each time you progress to a new level, your powers improve with you (aside from gaining other benefits, like +1 Action, increased attributes, and more). Rank is increased by spending XP on the different Abilities you have: each one requires 1,000 XP to level up. That means that you need 20,000 XP per Rank. As one would expect from an MMO, you get XP via questing, crafting, and killing stuff. You choose where and how to spend the XP though. It's super important to rank up because enemies of a higher Rank are either completely immune to lower Rank damage, or at least partially resistant to it. The same goes for you of course, a lower Rank enemy is somethin you'll be able to ignore safely.
I'm now working on the actual rules, which are based on Godshard's. I am streamlining them a lot though, with combat being as fast as I can make it. For example, there is no skill check for your powers: you want to cast a fireball (if you know how, of course)? it just happens, you do it. Of course, your target will probably try to get out of the way, but that's one less roll for you to make during combat. I also removed the critical hit tables, and simplified the wound system; it's actually one small table and it's optional now. So yes, the game's more forgiving in a way, since you're going to be playing super-powered characters, after all. you can still die, and it has consequences, though. I must say the game's coming along super nicely, and I think it's going to be a blast to play it!
I've attached the typical intro chapter to Riftbreakers, please let me know what you guys think!
In other news, Godshard is now approved by DTRPG so all I have to do is wait for the proofs, and it will be live over there! I've had a lot of problems with uploading it to Amazon though, and after many hours of frustration, I give up. If I want to be able to sell it there, it seems like I need to completely re-do the whole book in a new layout, something I'm honestly not willing to do right now. It's a lot of work, and Amazon doesn't even offer proper templates so I could very well rework the book into a new layout and find it still doesn't fit their requirements. I think it would be solved if I would just remove the page frames, but that would make the game much uglier, aside from the fact that I don't want two different versions of the book.
I'm sure you're all aware of WotC's backpedaling by now. It's fantastic news because it means that a lot of people aren't going to lose their jobs. I hope people learn their lesson though and not build their careers on top of someone else's work, but I think most are happy to go back into WotC's vampiric embrace. I have indeed learned my lesson though, and Path of the Aram Thyr will be released without the OGL, and I will release a Sacrifice version without the OGL as well down the line.
This has gone a bit longer than I wanted to so I'll leave you guys alone now. Have a great week!
