Quick poll

I have a dilemma, concerning the next Patreon content. I've started working on a lifepath character generation system, so that you may create a new character (PC or NPC) with a background with just a few rolls. Nothing new or revolutionary, but I think this can be specially useful for when you need a quick NPC, but one that must have a bit of a story to it. Or maybe you want a new PC but you don't want to go through all the process of distributing points, picking skills, etc. This new system should spit out balanced characters, ready to play in a matter of minutes.

My first concern is, how to approach it? I've started creating a table where you first randomly choose a starting Archetype (with 2 variations for each starting Archetype), but then I thought: wouldn't it be better to take advantage of the free-form rules and bypass the Archetypes? This may mean more tables to roll in, but it should also end up with more flexible results. So, do I scrap the starting Archetype idea and go for a more open-ended system, or I continue with what I've got so far?
