The coal face

Today, a selection of recent sketches. I've found myself sketching on paper while I think about upcoming stories. All these drawings relate to various tales currently in protean form. Mildred has a nice return to centre stage this year so I am practicing drawing her to get her right.

The only bad thing about doing a lot of pencil work in my sketchbook is that I start thinking it would be great to make a whole comic traditionally. Then I remember how complicated the pages I make every day are, with their many digital layers and architectural backgrounds etc and I remember that every few years I try this and I give myself a stress headache on day one. I think the only way I'll ever make another comic with pens and paper is if I am catapulted back in time to 1998. This is not a common occurrence, though I did make a comic about something similar which I restored to its place in the archive today. No I am not making any more chapters of it!!

I'd like to do a Shelley and Lottie story, but I don't know when I would do it. I've been looking at Murder She Writes and Author Unknown, both seemed to come at a pivotal point creatively, so I guess I will just have to wait for the right mood music. We'll find out what's in that suitcase.

Hold Em Or Fold Em is the third Great British Bump Off story. I don't think we're getting a third bite of that apple from the American Comics Industry, alas, but it's on the board and I have a lot of notes for it. It'll emerge in some form one day, it's a good, mad yarn. There's some hotsy totsy business on this page, I can't remember what it relates to so just take it at face value.

As a final treat, here's a comic cover I drew for my dear friend Marc Ellerby, it's his new vehicle, "Fight Pit Kicks". I think we'll all be adding this one to our pull lists at the old comic shop! I should add for clarity that Marc has neither endorsed my ideas for this comic or indeed attached himself to the project in any way.

Once again I am disappointed in the American comics industry and their flagrant fruit wasting, but I'm cheered to know that Mildred's grand return is fast approaching! And that Jack's most recent misadventures are canonical after all. Hopefully he isn't too worse for wear when he turns back up again.

Question for your next Q&A: Could you/would you find any satisfaction in designing the pages on the computer and then doing the drawing the old fashioned way? First 95% on the computer, etc.?

No. I could do that easily. It's the purist approach that feels good, working with pencils and pens to build something.

When does Kill or Be Quilt take place in relation to Solver? Given that it starts in Late July, and Lottie and Shauna have their reunion in the Holiday Surprise story, I’d assume it’s in the year after Solver Volume 2?

Correct!

So - "Hold Em or Fold Em" is Shauna's introduction to the underground origami fight world?

I was thinking ASMR napkin-folding?

Everyone of these projects sounds like a winner and I hope they'll take final form in the near future! Also, wow! It looks like Shauna has glasses again?

She has them in Wobbly Head too, they're on, they're off.

Such tantalizing hints at pleasures to come! Vampires! Kicks! Artisanal folding! I can barely contain myself.

I love everything about this except for the news that we will not be learning Jack Finch's fate.

You’ll see him soon enough Chris

Love those sketches of Shauna. As much as I enjoy Max's work on the bump-off comics I do have a fondness for when you draw her.

J
John Allison · February 23, 2026

I’ll be drawing her again very soon.

You'll be hearing from my lawyer

Entertainment lawyer? Signing on the dotted line?!

I'm now imagining Fight Pit Kicks licensed as a "joystick waggler" computer game á la Daley Thompson's Decathlon.

J
John Allison · February 24, 2026

I had an old Atari joystick that was reserved for that game only. Unbreakable. Unlike my carpal tunnels.

I will take all the hotsy, and all the totsy, that you care to dish out, whenever you open up that serving line. Especially if it means a whole storyline with Shauna, Lottie, and Claire together.

I'm joining the queue for the hotsy totsy buffet!
