Read SOLVER #12 (WOBBLY HEAD pt 1/3) in full now

Here's part one of WOBBLY HEAD, a long-promised tale that wraps up loose threads from WICKED THINGS, my 2020 Boom!Box series with Max Sarin. If you've not read that, recaps are provided in-story for any salient plot points. I think this is a really good one, hope you enjoy it. Part 2 will begin on or around January 1st. Your PDF can be downloaded under the cover.

Wobbly Head pt. 1 reinforces my theory, which is mine and which belongs to me, that John Allison is the best writer in England. And he can draw, too!

I'm downloading it now to read it after the serialization on the site. I don't know why, but I like rereading the whole story better afterwards.

Lottie's halloween outfit is giving quite a lot of Esther vibes!

I hope the girls getting turned in to robots for a moment was inspired by superman 3. I also like the budding romance with Claire towards Glenn and a fantastic name for a night club. A great read for a gloomy Monday evening.

Instantly devoured this and left wanting more! I can't wait to feast upon the rest

I’m incredibly excited about the next chapter of this but I’m also incredibly excited about time-travelling Jack!

Downloaded for posterity, will follow as it unrolls on the website over the next few weeks.

I spy Desmond Fish-man at the Slag Pit. With a cape!

Quite simply the best work being done today. You have inherited the mantle of Douglas Adams. One isolated word of advice: give the ending time to breathe.

J
John Allison · October 21, 2024

That's six words of advice. But the one page epilogues on 22 pages (a hangover from my direct market experiments) should really be at least three of 24. I am aware of the issue. In Bad Machinery I'd write eight pages of ending!

I opened this straight away and devoured it instantly with my eyes. Brilliant

J
John Allison · October 21, 2024

My aim is always to please, Rosanna, so this is excellent news.

"Oops, accidentally liked, sorry". Sometimes one line utterly hits the spot. PS: Did a Smiffys Fab Four costume for a sixties party. Oh. the horror.

Desmond’s rocking that cape and wine getup like a true gentle(fish)man

I’m only going to read a few pages, as I enjoy reading along and reading the comments on your page, but I can’t resist reading some of it now 😀 (and it’s quite possible I’m lying to myself and will in fact read it all later today).

I mean, why not both? Then you can gently troll the daily readers with mysterious comments.

Woah, you're on a roll lately! I was almost bummed we weren't getting more 90's Jack but this is story is like a well oiled machine slowly chipping away at a block of marble. To reveal some sort of gorgeous clue

L
Luke Drotos · October 21, 2024

Was not expecting the skeleton Lottie to be this imposter figure, so it looks like there is, or maybe even was, a personal reason for going after her specifically Also what was the timeframe of the Wicked Things chapters? Going off of the last chapter and this one, Lottie was nominated in May and then framed in June.

J
John Allison · October 21, 2024

It's pre- the start of autumn university term until Claire arrives in London in issue whatever and then it must be September, and wrapped up in October. Then Circus Windows is January (I think?) and Spring Special Solver is spring. I don't remember specific months, it will have been in my head when I wrote it but that was, in the case of Wicked Things, five years ago.

Page 8, panel 5, Charlotte says "No parpy!" when one might expect her to say "No party!" and I honestly don't know if this is a typo or some kind of bit that went over my head

J
John Allison · October 21, 2024

I like using "parpy" for party!!
