[MW Batch 2] Gasket - CR 4 Large Construct

Poison, Elemental, Construct, None

“What’s worse than a minefield? A minefield where the mines can reposition overnight.”

— Grok Sohlid, Member of the Guild of Elemental Explorers

War… war never changes, not even across different planes of existence—wherever life exists, it’s a sure bet that it’ll be trying its hardest to eradicate itself. This is especially true in the Elemental Planes, where the near-perpetual conflict between air, earth, fire, and water has borne many deadly innovations over the centuries. Among these stands the gasket, a noxious Construct devised by galeb duhrian smiths of the Plane of Earth.

Anti-Air, Anti-Water. Gaskets are formidable all-terrain combatants. Their spiked, stilt-like legs allow them to easily traverse treacherous terrain such as muddy shallows or jagged inclines, and the ability to expel short bursts of gas can propel them through subaquatic and aerial environments. Engineered specifically for earthen offensives into the Planes of Air and Water, these Constructs contaminate their surroundings, their toxins carried far by wind and water currents. The aftermath of a gasket assault can leave regions hazardous for weeks, a tactic that earthen skirmishers exploited to deny their enemies access to key strategic locations.

Toxic Behaviour. The most frightening aspect of a gasket is its ability to imprison a foe within a cramped compartment in its metallic chassis and then flood the space with a medley of toxic fumes. These torturous chambers are built to be completely airtight, inescapable to even the slipperiest Elemental. Worse still, any attempt to break free by destroying the Construct from the inside results in the unfortunate discovery that their fumes are also highly flammable… and that they ignite upon the gasket’s death. This cruel design not only secured these machines a fearsome reputation, but also inspired their name—a portmanteau of “gas” and “casket”.

Abandoned Minefields. Following the conclusion of the Fourth Great Elemental War, a neutral coalition of planeswalker giants ordered all remaining gaskets to be decommissioned and destroyed. To cut costs, most were ended up unceremoniously dumped into the swamps of the Plane of Ooze, where they remain to this day. Though the Constructs themselves are largely indifferent to outsiders, the true peril lies in the damaged husks half-buried in the muck, which can detonate at the slightest touch. Travelers navigating these desolate marshes must tread with extreme caution, for even a strayed toe against rusted metal can trigger a catastrophic chain reaction. It’s for this reason that in the Elemental Planes, the expression “blow a gasket” means to engage in a reckless and potentially disastrous act.
