The Plane of Shadow is a dangerous place—doubly so for those whose very being is anathema to darkness. Celestials who linger too long in this bleak realm, whether through banishment, misfortune, or a stubborn will, inevitably find themselves changed. As they grapple with crippling despair and unbridled fury, they absorb the plane’s negative energy, which clashes painfully with their own divine essence. The resulting friction creates dark electricity which courses their bodies, corrupting them from within and transforming them into twisted entities known as darksparks.

Purity at Any Cost. Simply existing as a darkspark is agony beyond measure. The unrelenting discordance between negative and positive energies quickly washes away all but one consuming desire: to become pure by whatever means necessary. Most take the easy way out and surrender to the darkness. They plunge ever deeper into the abyss, spreading pain and sorrow to purge the last remnants of light from their bodies until all that remains is shadow. Once the last flicker of radiance is expunged, the darkspark is reborn as an Undead creature such as a wraith or a specter—a dreadful fate, but one vastly preferable to torment unending. Rare are the darksparks who choose a different path: to struggle against the ceaseless advance of the dark until they are a shining beacon of light once more.

Black Lightning. Black lightning, the ominous dark electricity generated by a darkspark, is a magical phenomenon that functions by a strange set of rules. Unlike natural electricity, it isn’t drawn to metal, but courses erratically along currents of positive and negative energy. The darkspark has only a limited degree of control over it, and crackling arcs often surge from its body unpredictably, striking out at sources of healing or necromancy
