February 2023 Preview: the Dwarf Flying Machines!
Good evening guys!
Today we have the great pleasure to show you our last miniatures, the Dwarf Flying Machines!
It has been a truly challenging miniature to create as we had to design a somehow advanced technological miniature that suits the norse aesthetic of the Sons of Ymir. We had to think like a proper dwarf.
What kind of shape should we looking for? How the Flying Machine will be powered? How it will be drived by the Sons of Ymir?
After consulting a couple of Dwarf Engineers we came with a proper norse solution. We adapted the design of the classic dwarf norse ship -aslo known as drakkars- and a steam powered engine with two alternative options: helix or balloon... and we totally like it!
In the first build you can see above, the Dwarf Flying Machine comes in its bomber version, with a long tail fully packed with bombs and a second dwarf pilot dropping the bombs by hand.
Below you can see the alternative build of the Dwarf Fying Machine with a smaller tail. You can also change the default steam rotative engine for a balloon.
Both builds share the same Dwarf Flying Machine body with a big firespitter gun.
I know you will be wondering right now how are you going to assemble the dwarf flying machines right? Here you have a detailed picture of how the files will be delivered. The attachment areas will have holes for 2x1mm round magnets for the people who don't want to glue the detachable pieces together.
Remember guys, the February 2023 Release will be composed of:
4x Dwarf Firespitters Core miniatures
3x Dwarf Firespitters Command Groupminiatures
1x Male Dwarf Runepriest
1x Female Dwarf Runepriest
2x Dwarf Runemaster
1x Great Dwarf Runemaster
2x Runemaster Apprentices
1x Ancient Dwarf Forge
1x Male Dwarf Engineer
1x Female Dwarf Engineer
1x Dwarf Flying Machine
1x Heavy Dwarf Flying Machine

I have no interest in playing Dwarves but these are so cool I may need to print one.
i am a little curious about the rope supports as well, how would one land the chopper without the chopper blades dropping onto the pilots head? If there's a logical explanation I'm curious, if not, maybe I'll paint them as metal cables?
You just never turn it off
Absolutely incredible as always! Can't wait to print them.
Glad you like them Branko! They will be available very soon!
'Art is a subject inundated with opinions... (Chick Corea)', and in my opinion, the flying machines are definitely not duds but more great sculpts from Highlands Miniatures. Keep them coming, I'll be fielding an escadrille of these :-) !
Thank you for your lovely comment! Indeed, we have been trying to make people realice -since the beginning of this journey- that minitures are another expression of art and it is completely fine to not like something from a personal point of view but that doesn't imply that the artwork itself is trash. Glad you like the miniatures! :)
Really not digging having the rotors attached to ropes. Mind you - I have absolutely LOVED all the previous Sons of Ymir releases, and you are allowed a dud, now and again. I might be able to cobble together ornithopter wings - with an upper framework supporting the ropes and pulleys to move them, but as they are... they are just not up to snuff, expecially compared to your previous releases.
I Love the choppers. Will there be an airship too in the Future?
We may see something like a big airship in the future, yes!
When they will be available! I've got a tourney next week end and i would love to have it!
As always, they will be available around the second week of the month, so hopefully by the end of next week :)
Sweet Valaya! Love it!
I'm really blown away with all your designs this month, they are just incredible.
Thank you very much! It has been an intense but amazing month to work on, but these Sons of Ymir deserve it!
It's absolutely beautiful and stunning work! Would it be possible to get a bigger balloon version? I understand why it's so small from a game perspective, I just personally would like a more "realistic" (not really but you know what I mean) sized balloon.
Thank you! We thought about that but yeah, we didn't want to add something that put too much weight on top of the main flying machine body to: to not overtension the connection joints between the top and the body pieces and to not disbalance the miniature (making it harder to glue to the base as there is only one single joint located further back compared to the joints of the top pieces)
Masterpiece!!!
Glad you like them Alexis!!
I love the sons of ymir and I really want to like the flying machines, but I cannot. The Gyrocopters simply do not work. Firstly, anything with a rotor needs a counterpart to prevent spinning the whole thing, either a small rear rotor or a second rotor that spins in opposite direction. Secondly, a rotor mounted on ropes will drill the ropes until the pilot is beheaded. I know its fantasy but fantasy does not automatically beat physics, at least not for me. Besides that, I love the release this month😉
I agree that there should be some kind of solid material linking the rotor to the cabin. The way there's just nothing really holding them together is kind of jarring even if I know little about physics.
Magnifique!
Glad you like them! ❤️
Que puta maravilla!!!!!
Muchas gracias!!!
Flying Dwarven Gyrocopters?!?! Squeee!
you guys dwarven line is incredible way better than GW keep up the good work glad im a patreon..hopefully yall do a chaos warrior or elven line soon and more ogres
Thank you very much Laroscoe! We hope to continue creating amazing fantasy miniatures from many other fantasy races in the future!!
Impressive. It looks like a real nightmare to paint without sub-assembly, but you really nailed it.
Thank you very much Dusk! ❤️
I waited for you about this particullar model and ... just impressive !
Thank you very much for the support, glad you like them! ❤️
Like I said in a comment on your previous model post…..worth the wait! These are amazing. The attention to detail is outstanding. Thank you.
Thank you for your supportive words Karsten, as always! ❤️
I have one small request; could we get a dwarf waving mod for the heavy airship? Looking down at someone he is about to toss a grenade at. Lol
Wasn't looking forward to these models, I've never seen a gyrocopter I actually liked, but you've smashed it out of the park! it's perfect! Well played sir, well played!
Thank you very much for the support, as always!! ❤️❤️
I said at the start of this journey that your biggest challenge would be to keep the Norse look as your Dwarves got more sophisticated stuff. Well, you rose to that challenge. Great work. Those of us who resent A Certain Company for radically altering their game and destroying their setting before adding more flying Dwarves would like to see more of this.
Some steam propelled Sons of Ymir? I said yes! haha
so good. just awesome
Glad you like them Alistair!!
I had already printed a gyrocopter to go with my dwarves from a different creator, but these ones are better. Nice work 👍
Glad you like them Alastair!!
OMFG 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Yaaay!!! ❤️
Wow, I really can’t wait for these.
Thank you very much Stuart. We are anxious to print them!
Que flight of the Valkyr!
Juas tremendos!!!
Muchas gracias Bruno!!! ❤️
I cant wait for this release, I love the flying machines :D love that the gun on the front could be multiple types :D
Thank you very much Jack, glad you like them! It has been a challenge to design the Dwarf Flying Machine, but we are happy with the final result. ❤️
So cool! The motion implied on the propellers makes it so much better.
Thank you Thannak! We always try to bring some dynamism to our war machines by some sculpted FX!
Oh god - These are both amazing and adorable! :D
Thank you very much Frederik! We are anxious to see them printed! ❤️
This looks amazing! My OPR Dwarf army is going to love these! Fantastic work!
Thank you very much! It has been a challenge to design the Dwarf Flying Machine but we kind of like the final result!
Awesome!
