October 4th preview: The Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen Unit!

Good evening guys,

Hope you are having a nice beginning of the week. Today we can finally show you the Dwarf unit we have been working on the last few weeks that will come next October 2022 Release along with the Transilvanya miniatures in Highlands Miniatures.

First of all, we decided to offer a dwarf unit this upcoming month even if it is going to be a full undead release to celebrate Halloween because it was a nice opportunity to work on this kind of dwarf unit, a bit separated from the main core army of the Sons of Ymir -based on the norse mythology and aesthetic-. 🪓🪓

Since the beginning of our second season in Highlands Miniatures back in June 2021 we decided that we wanted to create a full fantasy universe based on our miniatures and armies -you can see the map of our fantasy world in the images of this post-, and not dictated by any other third company so we can have the freedom to create any other miniature or army without the limitation of other settings.

Since then, we have been working on a couple of armies as a main core of our range of miniatures, but we consider that is time to start bringing more connections between these armies, between the fantasy races, and more cohesion to our fantasy world with one goal in mind: to create a full fantasy setting behind Highlands Miniatures, with campaign and army books and many more cool stuffs! 🥳

But enough chatting!

Here you have the first unit of their kind, coming directly from the continental lands of the Empire of Sun, the Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen Unit!

This amazing unit is composed of five (5) Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen Core Miniatures and three (3) Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen for Command Group. These miniatures aren’t modular. In the preview images you can see all the renders from this unit and also some screen captures from our modelling software to show you more views of the miniatures.

About the Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen

“…the Dwarf pikemen were respected and feared throughout the lands of the old continent as professional battle-hardened warriors, ready to fight under the orders of the Emperor of the Sun. They fought in lines creating an impenetrable wall of pikes while their horns resonate along the battlefield. The Dwarf diaspora of Sunland is one of the many groups of dwarfs dispersed along the old continent who had adapted their customs and traditions, even their aesthetic, to their new land…”

These miniatures are designed based on the Swiss Mercenary Pikemen soldiers from XIV and XV centuries. If you want to read more about these soldiers, CLICK HERE. The characteristic musician is based on the Swiss Hornblower from the XIV century as you can see HERE.

If you find this mercenary line of dwarf miniatures interesting, we will expand it in the long future with dwarf mercenary units from other fantasy races and backgrounds, like dwarfs from Gallia -our medieval kingdom-, dwarf pirates, technologically advanced dwarfs from Caladria -the land of the inventors-, and many more!

Remember, the October 2022 Release will be composed of:

  • Four (4) Mounted Skeleton Core Miniatures

  • Three (3) Mounted Skeleton Command Group

  • Five (5) Undead Horses

  • Six (6) Skeleton Warriors Core Miniatures

  • Three (3) Skeleton Warriors Command Group

  • Seven (7) Ghouls Miniatures

  • The Corpse Cart

  • Halloween Event Surprise Miniature

Also, our new fantasy Dwarf Army, the Sons of Ymir will also have an incredible unit composed of:

  • Five (5) Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen Core Miniatures

  • Three (3) Dwarf Mercenary Pikemen Command Group

We will announce this unit next Monday, so stay tuned!

Nice one! Was waiting for some pike or spear dwarfs. By any chance weapons could be interchangeable with your earlier Warriors design? It suits my army a bit more... but now I'm considering a second army. Exactly like those!

Highlands Miniatures · September 29, 2022

Thank you Oscar! We will see some spearmen dwarfs in the future too! About your question about the weapons, due to the specific spearmen poses needed to be able to rank, the weapons can't be interchangeable. But we will see more Sunland Dwarfs in the future!

Hey highlands miniatures, I just wanted to say thank you. Thanks for making these outstanding miniatures. When I see all the fancy renders it's hard to believe the prints will look anywhere close to that. But these dwarfs are something else. The First 60 dwarves finished printing today and the supports where excellent! Not one mistake, not one failed print due to supports. And the details are stunning. I'm very glad to see your version of the little fellows in all their glory. At first i was sceptical about the heavy viking theme. But it fits quite well. So thanks again for your stunning work.

Thank you for your support and your lovely words! We are doing our best with our dwarf fantasy army, trying to bring back the childhood memories we have from this amazing fantasy race. We will keep working hard on these miniatures, bringing more Sons of Ymir along the rest of 2022 and during 2023. :)

I remember seeing the cow costume in a book about historical arms and armor. I should paint him white and purple like a milka cow

you know I was a bit confused by the horn blower, he seemed so out of place when I first saw the photo...then I followed your link and it was like... oh that is so cool. I now want to find a 6mm version of him for my Pavia games.

Great job! They would be beautiful even of dwarf pirates ... They don't have to be slayers... 😉

Awesome, I got some old GW Dwarfs with spears (15 of them) and was looking for Dwarfs with spears that would fit, so I could rank up that regiment. Yours are like I ordered them for my existing regiment. :-D Thanks alot!!!

Jaromír Stern Kožiak · September 27, 2022

Yes! This is perfect. Please make more dwarf mercenaries in the future. Halberdiers would be especially welcome.

Massimiliano Camurani · September 27, 2022

considering the propensity of the dwarves for firearms it would be nice to have also mercenary dwarf gunners with an imperial theme to replace the current ones

H
Highlands Miniatures · September 27, 2022

Thank you for the suggestion Massimiliano! If people like this mercenary unit we will expand the range to create more mercenary units from Sunland and from other fantasy armies!

Now this is how i imagined your sunland state troops ranking up

H
Highlands Miniatures · September 27, 2022

Thank you Scott! Eventually we will work again on the Sunland troops to update those miniatures to our current style, as we recently do with the Sunland Swordsmen miniatures! :)

Alastair Smith · September 26, 2022

I thought they were halflings at first glance which got me excited... Anyhow I really like the concept here of a different variety of dwarves, and they fit in really well with the Sunland line you have done. They look great too :)

H
Highlands Miniatures · September 27, 2022

Thank you very much Alastair! We would love to keep bringing dwarfs from other fantasy armies and backgrounds in the future for sure. And about the Halflings.. eventually, they will come!

Glad to get Imperial Dwarfs. Grateful for the historical link, I’d love to see that when you can. Excited for future Dwarf themes.

Tamás Lehoczky · September 26, 2022

They are very nice. Will the pikes be separate? Long thin weapons are usually not easy to print, and if they are separate, they can be given halberds too without any issues as well.
