BONUS: Nithya for LA Mayor

LA city councilmember Nithya Raman returns to the show to talk about her insurgent campaign for Mayor of Los Angeles. They discuss the city's converging crises and how corporate landlords, the police union, and MAGA are conspiring against working people. They discuss housing costs, homelessness, immigration and ICE, public transit, the budget, and the strange rise of Spencer Pratt as Karen Bass and national right-wing money turn the race into a perfect LA spectacle.

Find out all about the campaign here: http://nithyaforthecity.com

OMFG Chapo is off the deep end! They had people on who said AOC is worse then MTG on Palestine (which is insane), and then they have someone on who's good on rent control but who is way worse than AOC on Palestine??

H

You guys should have Aparna Raj on the show! She’s an actual DSA Cadre Candidate (as in spent years on the local steering committee and organizing tenants) and is running for city council in DC. From what I can tell she’s been very good on Palestine and distanced herself from the democrats as much as possible without running full third party (she did it for strategic reasons to block other candidates from winning the primaries or getting endorsements)

Pretty crazy that the Zohran ep recently was just them ranting about Zohran, an actual antizionist, being forced by law to have to enforce a city council bill that was completely veto-proof and therefore something he has literally no control over — like they were just embarrassingly uninformed about the very basic nyc municipal political realities — and then having a LITERAL ZIONIST on. Just insane, so cringe, so stupid, they look like a bunch of dumbasses

It’s disappointing to see so little accountability on Gaza in this interview, especially from people who are usually willing to challenge politicians more directly. As a lifelong Angeleno and longtime listener, I find it difficult to reconcile the lack of scrutiny here — particularly given Nithiya Raman’s acceptance of money from Israel-aligned PACs during a genocide in Palestine. My family home was destroyed in the January 2025 fires, and it’s impossible for me to separate that destruction from the political rot and institutional failure that allowed the catastrophe to unfold. The mayor’s office and city leadership failed people here, and Los Angeles desperately needs new leadership if another disaster is to be prevented. If leaders in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the second-largest city in the richest country on earth could not protect their own residents from catastrophic destruction, what hope do Palestinians have under constant bombardment and blockade? You are usually the people willing to hold politicians to a higher standard. Why does that standard seem absent in this instance?

D
Daniel Capshaw · May 16, 2026

She knows how to win over the Chapo audience, glad she called out Pratt for thinking 9/11 was an inside job, that is exactly what we really want to hear right now. She seems good on housing, but fairly bland to untrustworthy on issues beyond that. To quote the great Denzel, "I said God help me"

O

I knew nothing about her before listening to this episode too. Don't know how exactly she's different from a regular Democrat. Loosening zoning laws to help developers build more is like the core democrat demand right now. And is not in any way a socialist appeal. So why she's on Chapo idk

the public transit "big idea" blows, buses get caught in the same traffic patterns that cars do which make the driving calculus easier in favor of driving. if you dont want to expand subway then light rail or even resurrecting the old cable car systems would still be more cost effective than subways and actually add some convenience to taking public transit.

M
Mackle Less · May 15, 2026

The synagogue West Bank land auctions happen in LA too. Will and Felix were bitterly deriding Zohran’s mayorship for failure to take action on this issue on the last episode and then they don’t even ask this mayoral candidate a single question about it? Pretty weak tbh.

T
Tommy P · May 15, 2026

Respectfully what purpose is this interview serving? Is this really gonna sway undecided LA listeners to vote Raman over Huang, or mobilize GOTV? I’d rather hear a candidate like this be pressed to their maximum left position and have an established public record of such promises/goals. I’m very suspicious of Raman campaigning on mostly the saying the terms “affordability” and “progressive” with scarce policy substance to back that up. And almost framing homelessness as an issue because it’s unpleasant to see homeless people rather than because homelessness itself is a devastation. The only policy goals Raman offered through the entire interview were - rezone to allow increased density - increase restrictions on converting properties to air bnbs - increase bus funding - increase infrastructure repair funding - enforce unenforced sanctuary city laws - negotiate a smaller contract with police union (separate from the police budget as a whole as far as I understand) - reform liability payments to make individual departments bear more of the cost And a lot of dead air to fill in the minutes in between. I’m left disappointed, befuddled, and agreeing with others’ criticisms.

T
Tommy P · May 15, 2026

Tangent - as an outsider speculating on NYC DSA vs LA DSA, the main factor determining whether to endorse a socialist or stay out seems to be the voting system. With ranked choice voting you can endorse and mobilize for a candidate polling in single digits and still make gains for the left/extract concessions without being a spoiler in a competition mainly contested between conservative Dem vs generic liberal Dem. LA does have other good reforms à la NYC like (semi) publicly funded elections via matching funds, but we need RCV in this country everywhere and needed it yesterday

framing the transit discussion around buses and saying "well trains are expensive and just get held up in court, so we will add more buses" is just disappointing and seems to speak to a deeper hesitation to adopt a genuinely bold platform. rather than just cowing to the NIMBYs and their allied politicians by adding more shit to LA's roads, why don't we take a real stand for once and CHANGE SOMETHING. invest in shorter headways so the train makes more sense to use, invest in events that get people excited about the train and make more people realize it even exists, seize the momentum and build on it, anything but more fucking busses. jesus. it was a fucking dem (waxman) in the eighties who rammed a bill through at the FEDERAL LEVEL to stop the D line from tunneling in beverly hills and we're still doing this wimpy shit.

She's hardly even a 'progressive' at this point. Tight relationships with Zionists. She's mostly gone over to the YIMBYs on housing. She is leading the effort to defund money for tenant programs because she buys into the narrative that the real estate transfer tax 'slows housing production.' She's a liberal technocrat at heart who flirted with the left because it was 2020 when she ran for office.

r
rogue · May 14, 2026

Are YIMBYs wrong on ULA reform? If commercial housing production slows, ULA loses that portion of revenue anyway, and new apartment permitting has slowed in the last few years. New housing has to include a certain percent affordable units, and 61% of ULA revenue is single family anyway. Seems like the math on lowering rent might shake out in favor of Nithya's proposed exemptions, but I'd like to hear the counterargument.

I think Chapo does a lot of great stuff, but I do think y’all’s discussions of ‘the Left’s engagement in electoral politics’ would be more sober and grounded with a touch more knowledge about, say, the parameters of these conversations inside DSA (and not just what the loudmouth DSA accounts on Twitter say) Ex: 1/ Raman is not endorsed by DSA-LA. And she has long operated in ways that has frustrated and exasperated DSA members (on issues like Israel-Palestine) in her chapter and across the whole organization. 2/ Prior to the campaign launching, many in DSA asked questions (and didn’t receive complete answers) about the exact sorts of pressures inherit to executive office Zohran is now dealing with, and responding to inadequately [i.e., with respect to the police]

W
Wesley Campbell Caretto · May 14, 2026

DSA LA still recommends her in the race. They just didn't endorse and won't dedicate resources to her election.
