On the other hand, "AI", at its most complimentary, has produced....what?" "AI Slop" (the umbrella term at its broadest) and for a few years before that, various computer-assistance tools for programming, photography, digital art and animation, etc., all of which required prerequisite human brains anyway. Versus the human brain, which (besides the aforementioned "AI") has had a lot more time to work on it's "outputs", and is unsurprisingly more impressive for it on the "high end"--emphasis on that, >99% of what it's produced is also, by coincidence, unvaluable slop that simply relied on a much lower level of technological infrastructure (incluuding Patreon comments like this one). It's the <1% that has given us CASINO, Elden Ring, Dragon Ball Z, Metal Gear Solid, Dune, other things CTH and myself both enjoy.--and the rest, not so much. Even then, that's a commanding lead over the inorganic competition. I use the example because, by virtue of his field, Dawkins clearly finds the human brain significantly less mysterious a creation device than this new-fangled LLM-powered chatbot that is flattering him with sweet nothings. Some people aren't; I assume being born in East Asia and not indoctrinated into a religion centered around an all-powerful godhead is part of that (our magical thinking is broadly limited to "ancestor worship", i.e. the belief that all your dead predecessors exists on a different plane, then judge you like some omniscient Petrograd Soviet). Why aren't I enraptured by ChatGPT's sweet nothings then? Aside from the fact that I don't use it (I don't even bother using AI to write my own longwinded emails), I'm not yet lonely and old. Dawkins, presumably is, and given this episode's content, might well be aware of the simple trick he's fallen into (and just doesn't care)/ Granted, assuming I'm lucky enough to reach old (say, my eighties in the 2060s), I'll be a lonely old man too, prime for the picking by whatever future chatbots might exist. I am a biologist and I enjoyed the Selfish Gene by Dawkins.
