BONUS: Smothered by Riches feat. Peter Coyote
Former character actor Peter Coyote joins Will to talk about his new book Smothered by Riches, a polemic on the collapse of the New Deal consensus and the legacy of the Powell memo. He and Will talk about the history of neoliberalism from the Chicago boys to Bill Clinton, Peter’s decades-long political life including time in an Anarchist theater troupe, and a bit of Zen Buddhism for good measure.

Will let coyote cook on this one! Guy is a legend, I watched “Sphere” the other night and he carries the whole picture until he gets crushed in that door. Cheers!
Wonderful interview, it could've gone on twice as long as far as I'm concerned, and they're not always my thing.
I fucking miss real leftists in our culture.
This was so so good thanks guys. Bookmarked for sharing and revisiting. Merci buckets
Survival of the fittest only applies in the animal kingdom. 🙂🫡
Damn this guy is 84 years old? What an absolute legend.
Alan Moore level interview
"I am human, and reckon nothing human alien to me" is one of the ancient Roman playwrights, Horace or Terence I think, for the many thousands of people who care and can't google. Maybe Marx quoted it or something. idk.
This man’s voice talking about neoliberalism makes me feel like I could run through a brick wall
Slop?
Dark Money by Jane Mayer
PLEASE RELEASE THIS TO THE PUBLIC FEED. THIS IS INCREDIBLE!
Good analysis of the historical development pre and post Powell memorandum. Stored thoughts in ligaments, why jump into the ‘woo woo’ after all that?
Mmmñz Zzz 2
Guess you think this is a substitution for mu Thursday night slop. Great interview, BTW.
Is this a really wonderful episode or is it just an episode where there isn’t a Sons of Liberty reference?
amazing interview, thank you Will
This was gorgeous. It made me think of this contradiction-in-terms, which I mean non-judgmentally: “taosplaining”
"I saw through whiteness real quick" was savage.
The TVA accident in Kingston is insane and happened this century https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_Fossil_Plant_coal_fly_ash_slurry_spill?wprov=sfti1
Great episode. After 10 years Will has developed into an excellent interviewer. You can tell he’s done his homework and he helps guide the guests to interesting places. Always look forward to these interviews.
Peter Coyote is so fucking cool, goddam
Maddow is a neoliberal....
A truly insufferable one
Great interview. Now seriously Will, as one who also loved the book sphere as a teen, and randomly watched the movie literly days before this dropped.... I would just LOVE to hear what you thought about that train wreck of a movie lol
Hes correct about activist. Peter really putting these bernie bros to shame off the bat
This episode is fascinating. Hearing the actual how-they-did-it details of organizing and also his insight into the conservative action to destroy all the left's gains was awesome
Excellent interview all around. Loved his thoughts on Buddhism. Or as General Crooks put it: "We all have bloody thoughts."
fantastic. and moving. thank you
My wife's cousin! Great interview!
It feels good to hear an older guy who actually tells it like it is and isn't a brain-rotted, reactionary hog.
Very much enjoyed that. Thanks Will
This guy is funny as hell and he rocks.
Unironically the most inspiring shit I've heard in a long long time, just to hear this guy who has walked the walk for his whole life
Surreal to hear this voice on the pod. One of the best interviews on Chapo I’ve ever heard.
agreed
Is there a legitimate way to share this with a non subscriber? This is an excellent skeleton key to describe contemporary leftists
this is a public ep it's on the main feed or you can just use this link to share it!
Explained neoliberalism to me in a way that at 38yrs old I finally can kind of make tangible. This episode is Chapo at its best
Thank you for this. So much important information, so eloquently said. I have been meditating for two years, mainly by the method laid out by Eknath Easwaran, and it has already changed my life in meaningful ways. This is further inspiration to keep going.
Phenomenal interview. Thank you for your Chapo
You guys knocked this one into the bay
This episode really matters. Share it put it out there. Be like Peter Coyote. Let us all be like Peter Coyote.
This is your signal to read the Mumonkan
This is a great interview. Peter Coyote is such a badass. Please free this from the Patreon. I would really like to share this with friends.
This was great, really enjoyed this
Honestly after the Dear Prudie episode I thought I might be done with a Chapo subscription, not being a snob I just didn't feel the same nourishment as I used to. Then this drops, and I remember why I'm here, terrific episode with a fascinating legend
DEEP conversation. I wish I could beam these facts directly into other minds
"first I want to read you a list of numbers" *proceeds to recite a random list of numbers, somewhere someone drops their phone and begins walking towards a gun store
Peter Coyote is amazing.
Learned some amazing new expressions: “Taking it in the pants,” “it’s the crotch of things”
Just because something's an illusion doesn't mean it can't not be an illusion at the same time.
The thing that stuck out about PC talkin' about the formation of Think Tanks was that this wealth also funds PBS or has seemingly helped promote public affairs... backassward shit. ❤️PC, great episode.
Old school hippie Unc is kinda a woo-woo kook but he's great and also spitting fire and straight facts for a lot of this episode.
Awesome yapper, gimme more.
Tremendous!
This conversation was much needed. He needs to be a returning guest. Would love to hear more.
This is Boomer church. Peter is catechizing
Coyote is spot on. Hopefully Chapos will really internalize the critical message he reveals.
Really excellent, inspiring interview.
Will interviewing Peter is absolutely epic, I'm so proud 😭
Absolutely amazing interview
Peter coyote is an uber Chad, great interview
First time hearing meditation explained in a way that makes me eager to give it another try.
“But first let me read off to you a list of numbers” “Please!”
True Anon's recent People's History of SantaCon episode has a great section on the Diggers, as part of the evolution of the postwar labor/socialist movement in the US ultimately creating the conditions for John Wilson to film Santa Claus getting a handjob in a pharmacy.
Left wing boomers are so sick. So much indignation dripping off every word. Bad fuckin ass
Great ep
Peter Coyote is a real one.
so no Movie Mindset this spring?
Buddhism and Jerry Garcia Band did someone dose Will lol
Buddhism on Chapo. Folks, we really are in the zone
Its great hearing the voice of Ken Burns going off on leftist condemnations of our society hahaha
lol i remember when tva did that. they came to our schools to be like "oopsie! sorry we gave your parents cancer!! our bad, but we wont do it again!"
INSTANT must-listen after I found out he played General Crook in S1 of Deadwood
Episodes like this is what I want more of from chapo
He was so good in Southern Comfort
Hey I know that voice
Como pode um estadunidense viver tanto tempo em Paris sem falar francês?
Got chills
Coyote is correct that the belief that markets are natural came from Friedrick Von Hayek and Milton Friedman popularized a dumber version of Hayek’s Market religion… for more details on that history and the MPS, read Philip Mirowski… starting with Never Let a Serious Crisis go to Waste… and the works of Quinn Slobodian…
Smothered by Slop
Awesome guest and, will, absolutely perfect work on the interview
Talk about clarifying the mind, man this guy can talk! Never heard of him before, but this was a great interview. Glad you guys did it and posted it.
There is so much more to the story of the Western world’s Neoliberal turn… The Powell Memo story is all true, but it’s far from the whole story… another story which is even more significant is the take over of academia by Neoliberals… and… especially the dominance of the Neoclassical school of economics over all other schools of economics… in academia, in undergrad textbooks, in economic journalism and among all economic advisors… The dominance of some form of the Neoclassical school is almost hegemonic… Neoliberalism is built on a foundation of Neoclassical belief… Please read John T. Harvey’s book: Contending Economic Perspectives, 2nd addition… His book puts the Neoclassical school into context… and compares more reality-based schools of economics to the pseudo-science of the Neoclassicals… The reality-based schools include: post-Keynesian, Institutionalism, Marxism, and Feminism…
Astoundingly based.
I love this conversation! So good!
I didnt realize the Ken Burns narrator was such a fucking beast. Just banger after banger.
AMAZING get!
Interesting interview. He's a good example of the New Left. Created a commune in his youth and later went on to become a Buddhist... It is strange to hear a 60's revolutionary misuse a phrase like 'lumpenproliteriat' though (I think he just meant 'proliteriat') and swap "the revolution" as his life mission for a "path to enlightenment". At least he seems to be having a nice retirement out in the country writing his memoir or whatever.
That the truly revolutionary path is simultaneously a spiritual and material one is at the core of what Matt talked about in the Cush vlogs
Ordered!
Great piece but WinStanley's digger section needs addressing. Diggers were so called as they set up communes on enclosed land and planted. The king was probably dead by then and Cromwell was Lord Protector. Leon Rosselsons song World Turned Upside Down covered by Dick Gaughan and Billy Bragg tells the story of their awful fate
You guys are the best. Great interview, wonderful guy, and that voice I could listen to telling me I had a deadly disease and I’d still feel warm and fuzzy inside. Thank you for continuing to provide a fantastic service. Edit: Also, what a fascinating life story. Really, reallly brilliant stuff
Whut?!
What a rad dude!
I loooovvveee Sphere. The book and the movie. I was thinking about it before Will brought it up.
Is this the Ken Burns narrator?
2 mins in the answer has been revealed
bountiful slop! glorious day!
wow, Peter Coyote, what a get.
Roosevelt literally sterilized Puerto Ricans during his own tenure, a form of eugenics 😬
This was such a cool and hope-inspiring conversation!
Wow. Narration GOAT contender, on top of everything else. Ken Burns, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones…
I went to Grinnell College (Peter Coyote’s Alma mater). When I was there in the 1990s Peter came to screen the Roman Polanski movie he did called Bitter Moon. At the Q and A after the movie the students questioned whether it was a good idea to do a movie with a pedophile and a sex criminal. Peter Coyote told us we were being disrespectful to a great director and stomped off the stage. I have a hard time taking anything he says seriously since then.
That's disappointing
Hell yeah fellas
This one is too good to be patreon only
Seconded! Would love to share this with a non-subscriber.
My trough runneth over with a slop most nutritious and tasty
I got to interview Peter Coyote in 2015 for a small town magazine. He was so generous and was amazing. Love that he's finally on the pod.
Now that Peter Coyote is part of the Chapoverse, the time is ripe for a Ken Burns style Chapo video utilizing the talents of him, Matt, and Jon Bois
This is a hell of an interview, right up there with Will’s interview of Alan Moore.
Among my favorite narrators
Will, ask this guy how he got to be so cool
Great pull. I just watched The West last week and was enthralled/mortified
Excellent interview.
Love hearing Ken burns documentary voice
Chapo about to sound like a Ken Burns documentary
You ever notice how Dick Wolf and Peter Coyote are the same names?
Damn
Nice. He was great in De Palma's Femme Fatale
This is fucking elite DIGGER PETE
Smothered by Rich's WHAT NOW?
Feet 🤤🤤🤤
🇵🇸
