BONUS: Neighbors ft. Harrison Fishman & Dylan Redford
We’re joined by filmmakers Harrison Fishman & Dylan Redford to discuss their new docuseries “Neighbors”. The series chronicles neighbor disputes throughout the USA, and offers a near-psychedlic glimpse into how private property induces unbearable levels of psychosis in a variety of everyday Americans. We discuss how interpersonal surveillance, social media reinforcement, conspiratorial paranoia, completely useless civil institutions, bad pet ownership, guns Guns GUNS, and good old fashioned being a jackass render the very idea of living next to someone a psychic and emotional battlefield in this country, and how Harrison and Dylan went about capturing it on camera.
Neighbors airs Fridays on HBO and is streaming now on HBOmax.

This show is the absolute vindication of Matt Christman thought. This episode is great but it really shows what we are missing without one of the boys 😭❤️
One time i held up the line at the airport refusing the biometric scan and it caused the Israeli family behind me to miss their flight 🥹
thank you for your service
In the first episode the Guys could have been friends, dwarf and an elf, but it seems to me trough "Man" acting he roleplays for his pig wife, he becomes obnoxious just to seem like he is the man in the house.
Granted, the wife did get threatened by a third psycho neighbour
Lol. Theyre all trying to monetize neighbor fight content!! This is an awesome show.
Just watched the karate scene. Oh man how did they find these guys. Also he looks just like Charles Bronson to me.
I put my Property Law Professor on to Neighbors this week and he’s already showing clips in class to illustrate easements and servitudes issues and posting about the show on his Property Law listserv
Thanks for promoting this doc! I never would’ve watched it on my own and it is really something to behold
The show is hysterical and fantastic. Everyone massages the truth to some degree and the internet is stupid.
This made me have flashbacks because I was a fence builder and a neighbor lady came out and yelled at us that we needed to build 6 inches away from the property line.
more of the will cultural eps
Neighbors is America distilled
if HBO ever drops this show, coppertone should step in and save it. does anyone on this show have a normal job? everyone other than Marice seems to work as "aspiring cult leader".
FTLoG, please look up the true definition of private property... It's not personal property. Private property refers specifically to the means of production.
Well take away both!
When I worked for a City Health Department in the first years around covid lockdown, all of those unembarassed argumentative people you talk about were rabid. Public meetings shut down constantly cuz of insane behavior. Enter the "first amendment auditors". They would randomly come into the building with cameras, opening doors and just filming s*** trying to piss you off. One of them went by the name, no joke, Tater Salad.
Wonder how much the mediator got payed to show up and say, "you both suck, we're done"
I’m caught up on Neighbors and some of these eps are just depressing. Like a peek at an earlier act in the lives of people who wind up on Hoarders later on. And then there are some people who seem normal and self aware enough that I wonder why they agreed to do the show at all. I guess they aren’t so normal after all?
I get the valorization of the capacity of the people in these disputes to fight bc I think Norman Finkelstein is one of them. With the caveat that his dispute with Israel is genuinely righteous and heroic
the land surveying instrument is called a theodolite
Great debut! Would love for these guys to be guests on a main episode!
The second, fourth, and fifth episodes of this are masterpieces of Americana.
The show to me speaks to something primordial and nameless. These people are downright troglodytic. Homo Habilis type conflict. That one guy with the horses and the face piercings looks like the type of fella to tell Rust Cole that his shadow is bleeding out of his eyes. “I don’t like your face; makes me wanna do things to it” Sheesh- grim stuff
Just finished watching the show, I’m struck by how consistently these people want to be the protagonist of some epic political/religious/dwarven story but are actually terrible at managing practical conflict
they can't form simple statements or ask direct questions! like the former male dancer who's getting death threats from the vietnam vet can't just talk about that. instead he has to talk about the grass and how he thinks everyone is watching him, so that he's been afraid to leave his house for the last 13 years. just as you said -- they're so wrapped up in their own narrative they're left unable to express themselves.
This show is genuine art. The revelation in ep 3 that the mediator is the gun store guy from earlier had me crying. What a stupid fucking country.
Am i the only person who thinks in at least 3 episodes there’s one person who’s clearly the bigger dickhead, relatively speaking?
Show is incredible, you really do feel like you are constantly falling down a new rabbit hole. Slowly realizing how crazy these people are. Except for Jean, she seemed pretty normal and I felt bad for her.
the author cat lady’s friend was so fucking cool. as they were getting prepared to go on judge judy she was gassing up her girl like “yup hell yeah we are gonna go and WIN in LA” and then as soon as they lost she was like “fuckin idiot i knew she didn’t have a shot” LMAO
Will forgot to mention the cat lady in ep 2 is Rahm Emanuel’s doppelgänger
o hell ya i went to school w/dylan
Perhaps Pol Pot was onto something after listening the premises of this show
this one really reminds me of the Chapo cold open inspired of the real story where Rand Paul tries to build a moat in his front yard and gets his shit punched in by his anaesthetist neighbour (157 2017-11-09)
watching this show right now. we truly live in conner omalleys reality. the chair company is a documentary series etc
Re: deeds/property lines. A few years ago I did some work that involved Texas deeds. Some of them are from the 1890s and the metes and bounds were talking about starting measurements from some random yard debris like wheels and poles and shit.
Watching the series, amazing! The "neighbor" phenomenon is why I worry about the possibility of real collectivism in America.
It's my understanding that Russian and Chinese peasants didn't have a whole lot of say in the matter
Love to see a bonus episode
I worked for a state-level public records division and we got specific training on how to deal with first amendment auditors lol
Just the concept of a private beach is one of the most psychotic things I've ever heard. Terminal protestant brain. Irredeemable hog country
This country's obsession with privatization is maddening.
every damn year you guys get me to watch another amazing documentary on hbo and they never let felix make equilibrium II electric feelingboo
As a guy who always tells the TSA that I don't want my photo taken I can tell you that it's worth every second of annoying a DHS employee. They always huff and say something like "You HAVE to go through the process" as if I said that I don't want my ID looked at before going on a plane post 9/11. Just patiently nod your head and stare into their eyes as you waste their time, nothing feels better.
I'm gonna do this. I've never had an interaction with the TSA that was positive. They've always got an attitude.
As a long time chapo listener and someone who works as a land surveyor I feel seen. I’ve settled several property line disputes and it’s endlessly entertaining seeing how crazy people are about their property lines
How many times has someone tried to bribe you with like 100 dollars before
Because the neighbors think I'm selling dope.
I’m very happy to learn that Dingbat left the chat so he could make this TV show. Congrats.
Sounds like this show is a series-long version of that Hunter Thompson video where he and his neighbor are just straight up shooting at each other.
frogs are actually the worst neighbors, because they party and fuck all night, and they are loud.
Just watched four episodes last night. Fantastic piece of art. I love the Florida son of Victoria(?) who is constantly like this is not my problem
When Will said the Montana Mediator pulled up on a hog did anybody else think he meant like a 1000 lb boar? Like that Elden ring character from the DLC
I lost it in episode 2 when the cat lady lost the case and her friend says “Judge Judy wiped the floor with her”
America is suffused with would-be petty tyrants who are so deferential to authority (except for that one 1st amendment guy) that they're only capable or punching laterally or downward.
Will's American bushido code being meditating everyday about being in an argument is so fucking true
One day it will be me🧘
thought we were just about to get an episode about Toadfish and friends down under smh
No movie mindset for the Oscar’s this year I guess
Probably because movies suck this year
I love to hear about this, but there's no way I can watch this show without having a stroke.
Will’s just being a turbo. These people are freaks but my main take away was “damn I love everybody”
Hell is other people
One of the neighbors looks like Rip Taylor, I'm sold!!!! Sprinkle genie!!!!!
Just watched the first ep. Great stuff but I don’t see how anyone can watch this and not go full JDPON like will. So many Americans are just irredeemable, obstinate pigs lmao
This shit is so deep in the American psyche. The Salem witch trials were basically a HOA dispute gone haywire. All the accusations boil down to “his goat knocked over a piece of my fence”.
You beat me to it! I was going to tote the Salem Witch Trials as the ultimate example of HOA! Blasphemy! WITCH!
This show is rather captivating. The most interesting thing so far is the fact that the two cases in episode 2 were resolved, correctly, by two classic American institutions- county-level local government hearings and Judge Judy.
I love this episode but disagree with his assumption that "no matter what system you live under you'll always have this problem when people live next to each other." I think that's true to an extent, but the very specific flavor of murderous boomer / gen x'er neurocies that carry this show comes from that very specific American capitalist abortive creation of "well the economy might be destroyed and the American dream of upward mobility dead, and your generation killed it. But YOU can avoid the economic consequences of that so long as your private property not only maintains it's value but continues to accrue value infinitely in a way that outpaces inflation."
We’ve all become Lumpen Pétit Bourgeois. Mini king tyrants.
First amendment guy an absolute demon
I love him, imagine being so annoying that you come to believe it's actually your civic responsibility to be annoying
When the part of episode 1 hit where the first amendment auditor and the 360 camera collide, I was instantly aware that I was watching, no exaggeration, ESSENTIAL modern American tv.
This is exactly when I started muttering “we must talk to these people” to myself
Famous superheroes Aragorn & Bilbo Baggins.
I’m so delighted. I knew this show was special five minutes in. It’s perfect television to me
Bonus slop at the end of the world let’s go
Wills dumbass conclusion that being able to own a home is the root of all this, has really cemented I’m not a communist
good for u bub
All motherfucking cops are bastards
As a current Market Farmer this is a constant. Karen's be acting up due to the view of some vegetables as opposed to mowed grass. To close to home this episode lol.
If you want to deal with people like this all the time, I suggest a career in urban planning
Sounds like we need some of those sharia courts in our rural areas.
The dad who went against the cat lady was pretty chill to be fair
Does everyone know the PA Governor Josh Shapiro is in the middle of his own neighbor dispute? It's like big news in PA.
Say more....is this a rand paul type situation?
As a renter and apartment building dweller, living in a single family home and STILL having neighbour beef is inconceivable to me 🤯 Like you don’t even share any walls/ceilings/floors and you’re still finding shit to fight about?!
those are actually way worse because people think they buy a castle with an estate and hunting woods when actually they're getting just a back yard and are constantly reminded that they live in a society
Best 25 minute intro ever.
The thing that really sticks out in basically every story is the recording. Every single person has their phone out, recording, doing the "am I being detained" bit, no matter if they are right or wrong. Everyone (podcasters) always talks about how we are always being recorded and the surveillance state we live in, and this show finally made it all click for me about how it real it is. Even this show recorded everyone, now these people are all "internet famous". Half of the people on here try to use part of their episode to promote their brand/business. It's a world of petty grievances and hustle culture. It really is a perfect capture of life, and how there is no going back.
The king and the land are one
lol my dad was a real estate appraiser so hearing them talk about the uncertainty and like arbitrariness of surveying land its like yeah. i know they have formulas and measurements but like a lot of it speculative and up in the air. i also grew up being taught how property lines work
Hell yes! Ive been watching the show thinking this is right up chapos alley
Not at all meant as an insult. Sometimes Will gives Dipper from Gravity Falls.
Fave TikTok neighbor dispute was the guy who was angry that his cat liked the neighbors better and left him for them 😂
Just watched the first episode Sunday, perfect timing chapo
Damn so glad you talked about this show and its impact.
Like uhh I'm Bonusfied
I think the crazy thing is that everybody has an insane neighbor story. Like what does that say about the social fabric or contract?
That guy who was filming his next door neighbor and monetizing her videos was DARK. A human parasite and probable fascist.
Him, the homesteader, and that asshole who hated horses are all so evil
Omfg yes this is my favorite show on tv right now
I love this show
YESSSSSSSSS
the perfect successor to smiling friends
this show is the perfect encapsulation of our current, insane moment; I can't believe more people aren't talking about it. So happy to see this
damn, I got the name wrong in my head and though Harrison was the comic artist BeetleMoses (Harris) lmao
Like Ren Faire, I wasn't gonna watch it, but now I definitely am.
Fuck yes we been watching this shit since last weekend. Justice for Marice
I love the little gay man with the bowl cut vs his urban farmer (animal welfare abuse) guy.
That guy rules and I was really rooting for him after thin Ron Jeremy giddily talked about his ex and the topless parties they went to in Miami in front of his very pregnant wife. Oblivious imbecile
Zenzen says "Jorge says "kewl""
Jorge says “kewl”
kewl
