Murder From The Shadows - Stab, Kentucky

This week, in Stab, Kentucky, when a shot rings out from a grassy knoll, killing a beloved local figure, a mob of residents in pick up trucks chase the killer down. This all leads to a twisted and strange story of crazy motivations, and wild conspiracy that no one can even believe is real. Especially in such a small town. But it turns out, sometimes conspiracies can actually be real, and this murderous tale proves it!!

Along the way, we find out that a "karst fenster" is something to do with water, that even if you're the town hero, there's going to be some people who want you dead, and that small town elections can get crazier than most!!

20% of Scouts are girls / young women and many mothers are involved now. Our daughter got her whittling chip very early and is great with a hatchet. She fully plans to achieve Eagle Scout rank. Best of luck to any errant fingers out there.

Even if he does "get" the benefits from the VA they trying and not pay for anything for actual war heroes, they wouldn't pay for SHIT for him.

E
ENKC · October 16, 2026

Crazy how often these sheriff dudes whole existence is the "war on drugs" and how they are the ones who do it and we need to LOCK THEM ALL UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEYS. Then every single one of them loses the war.

Sorry Jimmie, no if someone joins the military, like my Dad, they have to pass Boot Camp, Serve, then get benefits. My brother joined, failed out of Boot Camp and got nothing, lol.

Mormons are no longer associated with Scouting. They do their own thing. My husband is a lifelong scout, and Eagle Scout, and a scout leader, and my son is a life scout and still does scout youth leadership. Also, while no system is perfect, they do go to great lengths now (and they have for many, many years) to protect the kids. They have continuing training that they have to do every year (my husband is always depressed after he does the training- it goes over all of the things predators do to groom kids, signs and signals that something isn’t kosher, all of that stuff) and they also have very strict rules about adults being alone with children. They call it ‘two deep leadership’. Basically, any interaction with scouts, physical, virtual, online communication- there always has to be more than one adult interacting with the kids. If a leader wants to communicate via email with a scout about a badge they’re trying to earn or an upcoming camping trip, whatever, the email will be addressed to the scout and CC’d to multiple adults- other troop leaders, the kid’s parents, other scouts if they’re involved in the situation- there is no ‘private’ communication allowed. Same with physical interaction. The only kid my husband could drive solo to a scout meeting or event was our own child. If another kid needed a ride, then there has to be either other children in the vehicle or another adult. Some of this stuff still has to be honor system based, but there are lots of checks and balances along the way. Occasionally, a scout will send my husband a text or email asking a question and forget to include others, so in his response, he’ll include other leaders and the kid’s parents and call attention to the first communication, and remind everybody about youth safety. They do background checks, of course, and sadly- they watch each other. It’s depressing that they have to do all of these things, because it is such a wonderful program, but it’s necessary to keep kids safe, and also keep the adults safe.

1:28:00 I know a guy who punched his commanding officer in the face. He got discharged due to having BPD, and now receives $4k from the government a month. He’s not allowed to work, but with the money he has opened multiple businesses under his wife’s name. He’s very successful now lol

“Lifelong Bachelor” is an old time euphemism for gay. It was used a lot in Victorian England by the overly stuffy Brits. 15th US President James Buchanan was referred to in polite society as a lifelong bachelor but local newspapers mockingly called him “Aunt Fancy.” You do the math.

“He’s a lifelong bachelor that lives with his mother” I mean, a lifelong bachelor in Kentucky means my first thought is he’s gay and closeted, honestly.

So crazy that this one came out when it did. There was just a recent event here in Kentucky where a state trooper was killed on a traffic stop. I’m not kidding when I say all units were called to find this guy, they sent everyone in the vicinity. He eventually got arrested on Dixie highway, which if you know you know

There's a James Justice who is a LAWYER in Oxford, MS. It's a great name! I also got hit on one time by a guy who said his name was Max Victory. I didn't believe him - I carded him and he really was Max Victory. He was a dumbass grifting music promoter, though, so a little less nominative determinism. 😝

M

Service member here, you have to finish in order to get full benefits. He likely would've gotten physical therapy before he was discharged

M
Morgan Pagan · October 1, 2026

Oh man! Finally an episode taking place mostly in a place I lived! My ex was an Army recruiter from '05-'08 in Somerset and we had a little house near the lake outside of "town". We read all these stats when we got his assignment, and it was 98.7% white and .3% black with the last 1% being Asian or Hispanic. Oof! While we lived there, Pulaski county went "moist" and a restaurant opened in Nancy where you could buy drinks. Other than that, we had to depend on bootleggers or travel to TN or outside of Lexington for beer/wine/spirits. Iirc, Somerset actually held the record for with most churched per capita or square mile--can't remember. Also, while we lived there, our neighbor's buddy would ride his horse over to our house, saddle bags loaded down with beer, then meander back home once he got drunk. He made the mistake of going to a buddy's house in town and when the police see him unsteady on his mount, they tried to pull him over, at which point, he woke up and evaded. On horseback. Yet he never left the street. He's on a dumbest criminals episode, but I haven't been able to find it lately. I remember whispers of all this when I lived there, but I ate Pricilla's "welcome to town!" rum cake and forgot all the details.

Amy Stegall · October 1, 2026

Love that Jimmie hesitated on my last name! Been with my husband since high school and when I saved his name in my phone I spelled it Stigall because that’s how he said it and he had to correct me😂 Also, live in Kentucky and remember driving a couple towns over with my mom growing up to buy my dad beer on Sunday’s (he was never good at planning how much he would drink on Saturday I guess). It’s been in the last 10 years that it’s been legal to buy beer on Sundays and a lot of counties surrounding me were dry until around the same time!

A
Alex Hulvalchick · October 1, 2026

So, funny story, but all you have to do to become a Kentucky colonel is fill out a form and submit it. Some crazy former journalist (highly recommend y’all google Derek Myers from SE Ohio I’m pretty sure he wrote his own Wiki page) used to brag about it so I looked into it, and it really takes very minimal effort to achieve.

H
Hannah Walker · October 1, 2026

So you can’t submit yourself and you do have to substantiate some type of special achievement or service. It’s not a super high bar, but people do get rejected! A friend of a friend has been rejected MULTIPLE times and is (understandably) incredibly salty about it. 😂

Holden Kirk · October 1, 2026

There was a guy in my neighborhood growing up who lived with his mom and he was in his 70s while his mom was in her 90s. He was an odd character. Also, the Mormon church isn’t involved with the Boy Scouts anymore. I think they broke off like 3 or 4 years ago. This was a wild story though!

J

My cousin was medically discharged at the end of bootcamp for carpal tunnel, which sucks because she was a hell of a marksman. I think she gets partial benefits.

A
Angie Pennington · October 1, 2026

My Son is in the Navy and if they don’t graduate bootcamp then they aren’t considered a Sailor so I would think that they won’t get benefits. They send them to medical if they get hurt, get them well enough to get discharged and send them on their way.

I live in Harrison Arkansas and when we first moved here, it was a dry county and a funny thing is during that time. It had the highest drunk driving rate in the state so go figure. Everybody drove to the next county over or up to the state line because we’re at the border of Missouri and bought their alcohol and this is hillbilly Country and they do have moonshine stils in these hills. also anywhere in the south or where there are a lot of tornadoes you will see houses that are half underground. There was one for sale here once that was really cool. It was along the lake. It was the underground house in the hill and it had a garden on the roof to see that house was so cool. I hope everyone has fun in Texas. I really wanted to go to the Dallas show but it’s hard for me to travel right now. I wish you guys would come to either Springfield, Missouri or Little Rock, Arkansas.

I rabbitholed for a second (I have not listened to this yet so apologies if this is mentioned - I save the guys for work so I can be seen laughing for "no reason") and the little townspeople were told seven letters was too much for them; they were the kind of place that "should be called a four letter word."
