Black Candle Murder Party - West Liberty, Iowa - Part 2

This week, in West Liberty, Iowa, we finish this wild story, with detectives completely baffled by the mystery murder, and the case going cold. That is, until a detective's chance meeting with a witness, who was 9 years old, when the murder happened. She says she saw one of the suspects performing some kind of ritual, with black candles, and apologies to the dead. There ends up being more than one trial, bringing the case to a close. But did they get the right person??

Along the way, we find out that you should always check for 4th graders, when performing a death ritual, that most people are surprised to be arrested 25 years after a murder has taken place, and that just when we think we know everything about a murder case, things can completely change!!

Great as always. Love how James tells a story. I get so involved at work. I have burnt food at home. Lol. Can I write her? I’m in liberal madison WI. I can get at least 100 signatures. And again thank you for making my days at work just fly by. Oh BTW I was 19, 21 and 23 when I had my children. They all have college degrees 2 have masters in business. I was 45 when I had the first of my 9 grandchildren at 68 the first of my great grandchildren. I was M young enough to enjoy them. I finished my education and have always worked full time while I had children and we were a 2 parent family with another young gramma who was very energetic and helpful. I have never regretted having my children young. Mainly boys with a lot of energy and athletic and so were my girls.

Wait! Did I miss something? Why didn’t they do mitochondrial DNA testing on the hairs found in his hand? I know they tested the bat…

R
Rebecca Bailey · October 1, 2026

Just sayin, those hairs for sure belong to the person who did it

I appreciate that they take the time to tell the whole story. Give us the details and get it right. Do you want it quick or do you want it good? Because you’re not getting both

I can’t believe people are actually complaining about this part 2 of the express show. Don’t you have anything better to do with your lives? Find something else to complain about! James and Jimmie work hard to put all of these shows together. They didn’t have to do a 2nd part but they did! And I’m glad because I’ve never heard of this story! Not everyone (except maybe my sister 😄) has heard every single true crime case there is! Lolololol 😂

Here is the issue, nationwide. Prosecutors should HAVE to pick the highest charge that they THINK they can convict. Being able to charge murder 1, 2, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, etc, should not be legal. It ENCOURAGES compromise. I've been on a couple juries & it absolutely does. 6 guilty, 6 not guilty, let's meet in the middle and give a voluntary manslaughter. THAT is RIDICULOUS. That is not a unanimous verdict & it is insanely wrong! That is promotion of wrongful convictions, simply so the prosecution gets a W.

100s of millions in police funds every year. 2 cold case detectives. Makes sense

Neighbor who committed suicide. He had motive, access, and he was unstable.

Damn y’all complain a lot. They don’t always do everything that I want or like. But I also know I’m not the only one listening to the damn podcast. Sometimes people are gonna wanna hear things and I don’t. You’re always free to go listen to something else.

I wonder if back then she had another man in her life, and sent him to beat up Corey (or he did it on his own) and then he accidentally ended up killing him. That would explain the whole candle thing.

I wish that charge nurse was a listener of the show. She would've known to MIND HER FUCKING BUSINESS. She got a grandma locked up for no fucking reason.

Well, I really hope Annette did it cos there's zero proof that she did. Huge miscarriage of justice.

R
Rachel Stoudt · September 20, 2026

WOW!!! Wild story!!

M
Melissa Blue · September 20, 2026

Interesting… crazy story. I don’t know what to think. I do have some extremely vivid childhood memories burned into my brain, so I do believe this nurse who heard what Annette said. It appears the baseball bat is irrelevant and not actually the murder weapon, but that doesn’t mean Annette didn’t do it. The DNA on the bat doesn’t prove anything other than the cops got the wrong murder weapon. Despite the fact her behavior was suspicious, I am not sure I could convict anyone on a case this circumstantial.

WOW!!!!! Absolutely mind-blowing story. This was so worth a two-parter, you can spring those on us anytime, guys. Thank you!!

That bat singlehandedly convinced me they got the wrong person, holy shit

Amber Wright · September 19, 2026

Fuck people if they complain. A good story is a good story!

K
KarenRocks444 · September 19, 2026

I don't mind multiple parts to a story. All the other podcasts sum up these cases in one hour or less. How do we get all the juice out in that short amount of time?

P

What episode # is Part 1?

D
Devon Marie · September 19, 2026

Thank you for all the details about this case! Definitely a lot of facts left out on other platforms I’ve heard it on. I don’t mind 2 parts or 1 part. I love listening. Keep up the hard work!

T
Tyler Mustvedt · September 19, 2026

I guess the moral of the story is dont have 8 relationships at once and buy and sell drugs?

M
M.M.E · September 26, 2026

Maybe you can do one or the other, but you can't do both. It's either sling dope or swing d*ck. Poor guy, he was trying to fly too close to the sun.

Jacquie is short for Jacqueline. Jacque is close but no "i". I have an Aunt Jacquie (for short), who was forced to learn to spell her full name at 5 years old, I figure maybe James can relate., lol
