What’s the title of the book James is quoting? I got 2 Audible credits I gotta use 😅
I'm going to brdo
Can you do one on Mica miller from the Netflix doc the Pastor’s wife?
Okay this wasn't a culty "gift of flesh give me strength" buncha fools. This is an example of human desire to survive (plus some assholes)
What’s Up Turkeys🦃? Imagine having the “back in my day we had to cross an impassable mountain before winter, to build a house” elder for your Grandparent.
It gives take out menu a different meaning….
What a story, Mark!
If you look on the map, roughly where one of the cabins was next to the lake, there is now a Taco Bell. Somehow this feels poetic....
I really enjoyed this series! Part 2 was crazy. I can’t even fathom being in a situation like that. I guess I’m a spoiled pansy living in the modern world.
The Marine Corps has winter training up in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Worst time of my life and I’ve deployed to Afghanistan
Statistically, if you are ever invited to a Donner Party, don’t be under the age of 5, don’t be over the age of 50, don’t be male, and go with the largest family.
Some of you may be old enough for this meme: “A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwisch is a meal”.
I feel like the Donners get the short end of the history stick here when I feel like the other families did more including more cannibalism
The Sierra Nevadas are fucking brutal now, I can’t imagine the obstacles they faced in the 1800’s. Great job, James. Fascinating series.
We drove over Donner Pass in April of this year, during a snowstorm. It was a harrowing experience and I hated every second of it.
I great book to read and would be wonderful for the guys to cover is “The Butchering Art” by Lindsey Fitzharris.
Alright so Jimmy's dumbness is an act right? I mean, I love both these guys to death, they are hilarious, But some of the dumb shit Jimmy says is just like..... it's got to be an act, there's no way he's really that dumb right?
I love the sierra nevadas. The terrain, altitude and weather are so rough and can be terrifying. It’s still the most beautiful area of California though.
That's fir letting us know the name of the book. I ordered it in Audible. Holy cow!
Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness did a skit of The Donner Party in an episode. Amazing.
‘Somebody standing over him with a knife and a fork’ 😂😂😂
This episode speaks to my epidemiologist heart. Cholera is usually contracted from poopy water. Can also contract it from food handled by unwashed, poopy hands. Ignaz Semmelweiss proved the benefits of cleaning hands and instruments in the 1840s but he was demonized for challenging the establishment. Doctors were offended by the idea that they could have dirty hands (seriously). No one believed him until years AFTER he died from being forced into an insane asylum and essentially beaten to death by guards. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/01/12/375663920/the-doctor-who-championed-hand-washing-and-saved-women-s-lives
Sutters fort is closer to Sacramento than the pass. The lean your talking about is more south sierras than the northern sierras where the donner party would have been.
Last Podcast on the Left did a 2 part episode on the Donner party. James and Jimmie did a great job of highlighting different aspects of the tragedy
" is he dying !?! , Anybody ?? " Someone standing over him with a knife and a fork goin " HUUH !?!? , Shit no hes okay FU@K !!! " 😂😂😂 1:06:00
Omg there is so much you won’t know wo understanding the geography. I live just outside Sacramento, just west of the mountains. Sutter’s fort is in downtown Sacramento. It’s so far from mountains when we are talking about starving and freezing people. The distance covered. Is hard to comprehend. My son is a competitive freestyle skier, so we are on the road a lot. I cannot imagine what they survived.
Listening here in OZ I fine this Podcast great. I learn heaps about the US and all the indidual states. This episode was a great choice. The guys doing a fantastic job telling the stories of the US pioneers. Good
Qatar
THAT WAS SOOOOOO INTERESTING! Love this one!! ☝️ 🥰 thanks!
The Sierra Nevadas need Brussel Sprouts PR team!
Yassss, I really enjoyed the first one. Seeing the new episode released made my day, even though the horrors persist, so do I
This was so good!
This is awesome I love old time history 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Most of the women outlived the men, as the men basically worked themselves to death building, hunting etc.
I dunno it sounds like some of the women were attempting to nurse babies in those conditions which is like, horrifying
This was a great Patreon episode - as always! Thank you for all of the work you guys put into everything 🩵
I was eating pumpkin cream cheese muffins, they are skull shaped and the cream cheese filling is their brains :$) They were delicious and fun to make
“Cholera stay cholera” shirt please 🤣
Hoar frost forms when water vapor in the air turns directly into ice crystals on surfaces below freezing, creating those beautiful feathery, fern-like formations. “Hoar” is an old word meaning gray or white with age—the frost was thought to resemble white hair.
Excellent, do more history based bonus episodes..edit..I guess everything you guys do is history, but I think ypu know what I mean
I live in Sacramento and Sutter’s Fort is here. Donner Pass is in a different spot, near Truckee. We had to read Patty Reed’s Doll in school and went to field trips at Sutter’s Fort in Downtown Sacramento.
Usmc cold weather training area is in the Sierra Nevadas in Bridgeport
I need an Oregon Trail type game but featuring the Donner party
The Indifferent Stars Above, about Sarah Graves, is a tragic great read. She was one of the women in the Forlorn Hope, ended up living peacefully in Napa Valley for awhile after this
I love that book!
“Too spicy!” fucking. Took. Me. Out!
Same!!! 🤣🤣🤣 and “no chorizo this morning!”
Listening while crocheting. Excellent way to spend a Sunday morning.
Eat it…eat it!!! Stick it in your mouth and feed it… Should have lead into the episode with some Weird Al 🤣
Wow. As an Aussie I had never heard about this. Absolutely fascinating story. If anyone is interested in an Aussie story of a similar era and ilk i recommend the story of Alexander Pearce as something to look up. What a tough time to be alive it was. ❣️
So good! Worth the wait, no matter when you'd released it!
Picking at my lazy dinner of spaghettios listening to James explain why you drink the blood first 🙃
I grew up on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada (kudos for saying it correctly btw, it’s rare), and you really nailed it. Even now, there are many places on either side that are absolutely terrifying in their harsh enormity, even in the mild months. It’s an unforgiving place. Thank you for giving this terrible story its due. Most tellings are bland and glossed over for palatability. This is like Ken Burns narrating, but he’s decided to say fuck it and reveal his filthy sense of humor, which would be gold. My retired teacher’s heart wishes more history was told in this way, then maybe more people would learn from it.
I grew up on the western side as well. Quincy…where were you when you lived there?
I had a legitimately absolute awful, miserable day and besides seeing my kitty and doggo when I got home, this was the fucking best part of my day. Thank the sweet universe for you two ridiculous yet lovely men.
Jimmie’s “Roasted the Rug?!?!” really made me laugh :) and I know I shouldn’t
This is technically the smallest town murder ever!
What’s funny is I was listening to a whole other episode while cooking and then I saw the notification for this and immediately switched 😆
OHHH THEY'RE GETTING HUNGRY!!
I’M SO HUNGRY FOR SOME PEOPLE!!
And thats when the cannibalism started
Causes of cholera: Contaminated water: Drinking untreated water or ice made from unsafe water. Contaminated food: Eating raw or undercooked seafood, unwashed fruits, or foods left out in unhygienic conditions. Unsanitary Campsites: Travelers camped tightly together along the same narrow corridor, especially near the Platte River flood plain. Poor Waste Management: Emigrants dug shallow holes in the ground to use as outdoor toilets near their stops. Water Runoff: Rain easily washed waste from these makeshift latrines directly into the nearby streams and rivers that people used for drinking and cooking. Unwashed Hands: Pioneers rarely had access to running water or soap to clean their hands after handling waste or caring for sick travelers before preparing food. Carried Along the Route: Infected travelers continually seeded new campgrounds and waterholes with the bacteria as they moved west.
Gross.
Yes im so pumped for this!! LETS GOOOOO!!
Ahhhhh! So excited!! Part 1 might just be the best episode yet, with the way you depicted the story. Love you guys
Gonna listen to this as we drive over Donner pass. I've seen that after the snow and I'll never understand how ANYONE survived, cannibalism or not!
Let’s Eat!
Yaaaaaaaaay 🍽️
