When A Bloody Person Knocks - Spring Brook, Wisconsin
This week, in Spring Brook, Wisconsin, nothing is as it seems, when a bloody young woman stumbles up to a farm house door, with a word carved into her arm. She has a terrible story to tell, of barely getting away with her life. She says that she turned the tables on her would be killer, after being attacked in her car on a lonely farm road. The problem is, none of this turns out to be true, leaving detectives a twisted mystery to unravel, with shocking results!!
Along the way, we find out that Wisconsin has too many towns that have the same name, that wild rice takes too long to cook, and that you can only manipulate so many people, before the walls start to crash down on you!1

Isn’t “If you see something, say nothing, and drink to forget” lifted directly from Welcome to Night Vale? Or does that joke predate them?
I live in Wisconsin and have stayed at the Spring Brook Resort. We had the hardest time finding it because I didn’t know there was a Spring Brook and Springbrook. 😂
I love Wisconsin, but not in the winter. 🤣 They only plow the main roads in Germany. If you live on a side road, good luck.

Footprints in the mud …….. I’m officially DEAD .
Happy little trees fucking happy little rocks 😆 🤣
Ugh, they made us read Into The Wild for a freshman college class - that dude was an idiot, completely unprepared for the reality of living in the wilderness (like, he didn't realize rivers increase in size in the spring due to snowmelt). Dude wanted to live in outdoor fantasyland and ended up starving to death. Please do not idealize him. Others in my class were like "oh, so romantic." Naturally, those were city kids 😅
James, it's called color-deficient. My brother has it too
jimmie second guessing himself after accurately pronouncing my last name
James, Jimmy, I cannot recommend enough doing a bonus episode on insanely unprepared wilderness people. Stand out stories include: Don Starkell, who made three trips to try and kayak the Artic ocean (each somehow more of a comedy of errors than the rest) And Alan Cooper, who tricked several people to join him on an unauthorized drive through the SAHARA F*ING DESERT with basically no supplies or sense of direction. Both are so worthy of being bonus content, you guys would go nuts.
Sounds like Ezra is going down Casey Anthony's hallway.
Your heads gunna pop again...spring brook resort is in Wisconsin Dells, Colombia county Wi. So it's actually 3 different places. That's what happens when you drink to much PBR in Wi. See ya soon at the Pabst!! Episode 731
Holy borderline personality disorder
"See something? Say nothing, and drink to forget" is indeed a greeting card by a really fun podcast called Welcome to Night Vale. Btw... very fun podcast..
N .
Whataburger > In-n-Out. All day, everyday, forever.
‘Prone’ is facedown. ‘Supine’ is face up.
James/Jimmy, may I recommend the restaurant Hell’s Kitchen when you’re in Minneapolis. The food is incredible, and the place is like a shrine to Ralph Steadman, his art is all over. It’s right downtown not too far from the State. Can’t wait for the show!!
Wow, I actually heard my name. Love this podcast! I've been binging all week!
Spiders are all over, we leave them alone and they leave us alone 🤣
Man these guys are funny but they definitely drop some L takes from time to time. But none of them are as big an L as their In-N-Out take
a great one for the traumatised autistics ✌️ /sar
I would be okay with a 9 hour show😂
Pretty sure all that right side left side shit about the brain is a myth. So is the one people say "we only use 10% of our brain". Love yall =]
Huge pop for James mentioning “The Duke of Dorchester” Pete Doherty. He actually just died mid-June.
Low key want to change my name to Ezra, though.
I am SO excited you covered this case. I have tried to listen to it previous from other people and I couldn't follow because it is convoluted. I get it now! (I swear I am not a complete dunce. I have the adhd.)
Speaking of Ralph Steadman, do not miss his illustrations of Alice in Wonderland. I wore a pink T-shirt with the Mad Hatter on it when I walked on stage to pick up my college diploma.
I was at the Madison show... Was having a HEART ATTACK waiting in line to go in with the spiders.... Wtf!!!
I went to school at Eau Claire during this time and spent a lot of time at Racy’s. Had no idea this murder happened until over a year after the conviction
This episode reminded me to renew my vehicle registration. I got pulled over while on my way to the tax office AND while listening. The state trooper saw the title on my dash and we had a good chuckle.
God, imagine giving a man a cup of coffee and letting him sit outside your job and unknowingly setting off a crazy series of events that lead to your murder.
Xx
For all of the gruesome stuff you have talked about over the years, I have never heard Jimmie so disgusted as he was at “600 texts a day”.
I don't think I have 600 txt in a year. Let alone one freakin day. She wanted pound town way to much.
There is literally a Pound, WI and Pound, VA…probably more 😂
My father in law cut off the top of his thumb one thanksgiving. He ate dinner first with his hand sticking up in the air. Went to the hospital, said it was mad and was putting him on the fast track to be seen. Sat for over 90 minutes, he finally went to the window and demanded his paper work. He said, “Give me my paperwork, I can bleed to death at home.”
I knew it was Ezra!!! Oh they are a wild situation
I'm an hour and a half from here!
I agree with James. In n out is way overrated. Their service is great and the company treats their employees well, but the fries are mushy trash, even when I ask for well done.
I still cant believe false accusations like that dont result in some sort of charge for Ezra. That seems crazy to me. Lying to police in basically every situation results in some sort of charge, but a false rape accusation doesnt? Weird.
I've heard this call on another podcast I listen to. True 911 calls. I heard the word "boy" carved into her and I already know Jimmie and James will not disappoint the telling of this "story." And I'm a lesbian so men disappoint me a lot 🤣 but these two have never 🤣❤️
I hope they know what high praise that is. I'd watched some of this trial and recognized it immediately as well, I'm always on board for the new tidbits James will dig up. Yes I realize I'm going through commenting late, pretend I said this earlier to your comment, thank you
As soon as I heard “McCandless” I knew exactly what it was from.. “Happiness is only real when shared”
Just heard a Rockford reference in the beginning of the “town stats” 😂😂😂 yep you’re right, they’re drunk too
I remember Sword & scale doing this case years ago. This is an infinitely better retelling of course. As Jimmy might say "She is a paaaarty!"
Genuinely impressed that Jimmy has graduated from his Andrew Jackson phase to correcting the names of Native tribes. Next up: land acknowledgements.
I grew up at the main house of the Knapp Logging Company in Menomonie, WI. It was a youth camp for an Episcopalian church when I lived there. My parents ran it.
Ralph Steadman does the label art for Flying Dog beer too!
Jimmie, I was also thinking of Call of the Wild, so I hope that helps.
EZRA MCCANDLESS!!!!! I've watched this trial probably a half dozen times!! It's FASCINATING!!
Neither Spring Brook is anywhere near Wisconsin Dells! And Wisconsin Dells is NOT the north woods! This is easily researched. Look at a map. <- Hate to be that guy, but they are very different places. That is all.
There's a Spring Brook Vacation Resort in the Dells, pretty sure that's where the confusion comes from.
James clearly annoyed by Clancy conspiracy theories. 😂 And I think the agreed theory on McCandless was that he mistook something poisonous for a potato plant.
So, that van was left there until the last decade. People kept trying to get to the van and needed to be rescued. Finally an individual decided to pay to have it removed. you can see a replica at a restaurant near Denali national park.
I feel like Jimmie kept hearing pee green, not pea green, with the yellow. Maybe I'm bad with colors, too lol
About the cannibalism thing, it was only in the late 20th century that people in the mountains of Papua New Guinea stopped eating the brains of dead relatives. There are complicated reasons why they did that, ritually it was an important for connecting with the dead, but it was especially important for women and children - meat was rare so brain provided lots of calories and fats that they were missing. It wasn't even that old a tradition, they'd only started in the 19th century, I think, when food sources changed. Eating brains caused Kuru (sp.), a prion disease like CJD, mad cow disease and scrappie. Kuru has pretty much died out since they stopped eating brains, but it was a massive issue for years, causing physical and mental decline that resulted in death. Survivall Cannibalism has a long history in naval history too, especially during the 17th to 19th centuries. It wasn't about keeping people with them in that case, it was about being stuck in an open boat in the Pacific for months on end. Cannibalism is fascinating as a subject for historical amd scientific investigation.
Australian anthropologist here .... One of my teachers was part of the administration that stopped the practice. But no it wasn't due to survivalism or lack of animal protein. It was always strictly ritualistic which is why it was difficult to stop.
AI Overview The word supertramp originally means a hobo or a wanderer who travels widely, a term first used by Welsh writer W. H. Davies in his 1908 book The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp.
Cram that AI horse shit up your ass
Jimmie - You were looking for PETE WENTZ James - You were looking for “ISLAND IN THE SUN” by WEEZER
7 year listener of the pod and I’ve never heard the guys be so gentle with their words towards a heinous murderer. What was it about this clearly manipulative evil young woman that deserved any grace or sympathy? Kinda unfair on the victims family
Wolf spiders
Love 'em.
how do you not know Supertramp?! he was fucking incredible.
They…. The entire band is awesome.
Wisconsin native here, I am indeed covered with spiders, we all are.
Me too.
I love y'all but you got the information on the town wrong . The spring brook Ezra was from is about 2 1/2 hours from the dells. Woe-jah-wah btw 🤣 but I like your pronunciation better! Thanks for the little spot light on my hometown though!
I’m maybe an hour from there, outside of River Falls. I always love the pronunciation from James, sometimes it’s so good, I adopt that pronunciation 😂
Woohoo
Wisconsin, yah, indeed.
