Love James trying to pronounce Michigan places. Lol. Then the surprise hearing my last name in the final story.😂😂😂😂

J
Joel Tscherne · August 24, 2026

When James was reading the info about various people shopping it reminded me of a Facebook feed.

I think carbolic acid death has been mentioned in old timey articles a couple times now. I remember another instance where a boy got ditched by his gf so he drank a bottle in front of her and died a few hours later

Our rural newspaper in 1970's still had a social column. The "reporter" was just a local lady who stayed up on the gossip and shared. Usually included who had guests for dinner, which was usually another small town resident

L
Linnea Kelly · August 18, 2026

Thanks to Jimmie correcting James on how to say Sault Ste. Marie.

My great-great grandmother used to write the social column in a small town in Indiana in the early 1900s. I found a ton of them on Newspapers.com. It would kill me when they’d give their addresses, tell how long they’ll be gone and where to. My great grandparents used to be in the local paper here in the social pages. Benefit luncheons, lawn parties, birthday parties. How they decorated, what they served, games played, who attended. Crazy stuff, but I love it!

Omg, lmaoooo I thought James was super duper high but...I had the playback speed on .75! 😂 I was a little concerned at how slowly he was reading! Granny with technology over here!👵

If that chill tonic contains quinine it might prevent malaria since tonic water contained it and was used as a prophylactic for malaria. Gin and tonics came about from when the British colonized India. The medicinal quinine was mixed into soda to hide the bitter taste and gin was added to make you more likely to drink it.

What kills me is the newspaper published the address of the person. "Mr & Mrs Hal Jones of 123 Main Street, a son Monday.". People would read the paper and go to whatever house and rob them blind.

Apparently, butter was an expensive dairy staple and was hijacked sometimes!

My sister and I were trying to move a dead calf when we were kids and she landed on a giant 100 yr old nail..had to run to dad and tell him my sister sat on a nail. He then brought her to the hospital to get tetanus boosters, fun stuff hahaha

When they were talking about the thresher death, anyone else think of the GTA San Andrea's mission with the combine harvester

Too few people are disgorging. Buy PlantLax to kickstart your lazy liver.

The first kid is a member of the Skakel family (aka “the other Kennedys”) and was never punished. He is the first in a long line of men in his family who killed girls.

Family lore is my last name was Riddell . A murder occurred this was 1800’s and the great grandfather fled and changed his name to Riddle . Things didn’t much change the Riddles were jailed for chicken thievery. Anyway great episode once again.

C

I live in a town named Riddle, settled by the Riddle family (or a family of Riddles); the last surviving member died several years ago... Hit by a semi-truck while riding his bike out on the ol' bypass road.
