While waiting for the sorting of the samples and materials we'd cleared away earlier to finish, I chatted with Fiora and the others for a while, but it seemed the sorting was completed before we grew tired of chatting.
When the staff member in the back came over, they told Fiora that the work was finished.
"Good work. Please go ahead and prepare the next one. Starting with the liquids?"
"Yes. Is this spot all right?"
"Yes. Sera, I'd like to ask for your help again. Is that okay?"
"Yeah, that's fine, but... what am I doing?"
I remembered that she'd mentioned something about liquids, and that among the things we'd sorted earlier there'd been a liquid in a test-tube-like container.
If I recall correctly... that one was.
"Was it water drawn from the river in the northern forest?"
"Yes. I'm going to add one drop of reagent at a time to the water drawn at each location and examine the reaction. I'd like you to see which drop it reacts to. All right?"
"...So I'm just watching the drops fall? Understood."
I'd seen a scene like that in a commercial for cosmetics or something in my previous life... but from what Fiora had just said, I'd be doing something fairly similar.
Reacting... means it'll give off some kind of magic power or something like that, I suppose.
I didn't know how long it would take, but I'd probably have to keep waiting still for the magic reaction, and I'd have to keep paying attention to the magic reaction the whole time, so if you did it normally, it'd be a pretty tedious job.
For me, since I could tell that reaction just by looking at it, maybe it wouldn't be so tedious.
She probably wants to get this done while I'm here.
The staff members, as if thinking they should do it before I changed my mind, briskly started preparing, far more quickly than they had for the earlier work.

A staff member was adding a red liquid one drop at a time with something like an eyedropper to a test tube filled with river water.
After watching for a few seconds, if there was no reaction, I prompted them to continue.
And Teresa recorded the number of drops that were added.
That kind of work continued.
I'd thought it was just a matter of watching, but the interval between drops was so short that I couldn't even chat properly.
This is definitely quite a tedious job.
I began to understand a little how the staff members felt, hurrying with the preparations out of fear that I'd change my mind.
"Ah, it changed."
The liquid in the test tube was faintly emitting magic power.
Though it wasn't much, it gradually faded, and after a few seconds it would disappear completely.
If I'd been careless, I might not have noticed it, but... I didn't miss that change.
When the staff member heard my words, they stopped adding the reagent and brought it to Fiora, who was at another workbench.
Then they brought a new test tube and started adding the reagent again.
Was about half of it left?
It wasn't busy, but it was work where I couldn't let my guard down... I needed to focus.
A faint drowsiness was drifting in, but I refocused and shook it off.

"Good work. Let's stop here for today."
Just as we finished checking all the test tubes we'd been going through repeatedly, Fiora announced the end of the work.
Time... how much time had passed?
I'd been gradually spacing out, so I couldn't say for sure, but was it about an hour or so?
Goodness... it had been a while since I'd done such simple work, and I nearly let myself zone out.
While watching the staff cleaning up the workbench out of the corner of my eye, I moved a little away and stretched, extending my arms and swinging them around in circles.
"As expected, Princess, you're tired too. Toward the end, your replies were getting hollow."
Teresa came over and, with a wry smile, told me how I'd looked during the work.
I'd thought that even though I was spacing out, I was still doing the work properly... but from how Teresa put it, it seems I was pretty close to the edge.
Fiora picked a good time to stop.
