I'm also unsure how I feel about Hordy's backstory/reveal. On one hand, it fits in perfectly with the themes of the arc: that hatred and revenge are a cycle, and if people don't get their own prejudiced or vengeful emotions under control, no matter how justified, it just gets passed on to the next generation. "The children are watching", said Otohime. And she was killed by Hordy, a fishman who never experienced mistreatment from humans himself but simply hated them because he was taught to by others. On the other hand, the execution wasn't done all that well. By making it this a big "reveal", it ended up feeling underwhelming and anti-climactic. Hordy being an "empty" villain is the point, but it still feels a bit boring. It's not as impactful or memorable as a villain that has goals and reasons for his actions.
That’s not “goop!” That’s venom! Blue-ringed octopi are poisonous. One of its suction cups has venom a hundred times more than cyanide! which means Zoro’s in big trouble. Of course you shouldn’t believe that.
These two episodes were great, I also very much appreciate them showing Hordy's past to really illustrate how he was created in detail. Personally, I think the way they did the reveal of Hordy's motivations was initially misleading. We already knew Hordy was a product of his environment, and we knew he was influenced by Arlong to some degree because Arlong was his stated role model. Villains in One Piece are not known to always have been direct victims in some way to explain their evil deeds, so it's not like it is surprising for Hordy to be purely a product of environment and indoctrination especially with the subject matter being racism. The show acting like it was a reveal made it seem like they were giving him a NEW motivation, but in reality it was already the assumed motivation by the audience. I don't think it should have been treated as a reveal, it just ended up being misleading and underwhelming. I would have preferred if during Fukaboshi's fight with Hordy it showed Hordy saying "nothing" instead of hiding what he said. It would not have been that surprising, but it would have still had impact since it just further solidifies the kind of evil man Hordy was and how bad the indoctrination of racism had become. Then they show Hordy's backstory and Fukaboshi blaming himself for turning a blind eye to the Fishman District tying it all together nicely.
I don't think it needed to be treated like a reveal either, but I feel like that should be an eye-opener regardless because it is EXACTLY what fisher tiger and otohime said would happen. It's as if he's telling all the people (btw the people that weren't at the area where the straw hats are fighting) that they all messed up. So less of a shocking reveal, more like something that NEEDED to be said but nobody but Fukaboshi said it
I hope you finish the arc next week
The best explanation for red hawk is that its like Diable Jambei where the friction causes it to light on fire
I always thought it was the heat from Luffy’s gear second that lights up his haki like kerosene.
Yeah the reveal of Hody is probably one of the least impactful cliffhangers of the show. It doesn't help that the character himself is rather uninteresting and non-threatening. Luckily the great flashback of this arc helps keep you wanting to see it to its resolution!
100% agree
non spoiler - Haki coated arm + gear 2 speed = actual heat/flames from friction/pressure
that is not confirmed
