play! compatibility/progress report (30/04/2024)
It's that time of the month again... one day earlier? As the games I'm testing right now aren't even close to the end, I've decided to close the list sooner than I've wanted as nothing else would be able to make it in the next days. So let's talk about some of the progress made:
Fatal Frame III
This is actually a late result from the previous month as the changes that made it playable weren't merged until after the report was made. The tldr: game was hanging at some advanced point in the story, when you need to hear a specific tape in-game. While trying this, right after checking the tape the character would go invisible and you're softlocked. My guess was that this was similar to the first gamebreaking issue we saw on Fatal Frame 2: sound. But nope, the issue was actually a missing clamp (limitation of the range a number can be inside the code), as seen here in the fix.
Onimusha 3
While we're not sure exactly which change fixed the issue, what was broken with the game previously was the input. You could reach in-game but it was like a specific button was always pressed, so to move around you needed to hold some other button, which was weird and annoying enough to make most people give up after the first area. With this fixed I only needed to get my ass kicked till the very end.
Zombie Zone/Zombie Zone - Other Side/OneeChambara/OneeChambara 2
This combo of games share the same engine and used to share the same issue as well: the map was invisible. While this is a simple game with simple maps, you really needed to check the map from time to time (specially at the caves and the hospital levels where almost all places look exactly the same) to be sure you're not going in circles. Map rendering fixed, nothing else needed to finish the games
Chaos Legion
This little guy was stuck with an invisible boss as it's gamebreaking issue and... surprise surprise, while testing it to get a save state and help fixing the issue I've found out it was already fixed by some other previous change. I just had to finish the game and suffer at the hands of the boss before the final boss (which is much harder imo).
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
I got into the "racing mood" again and decided to check on the NFS series. Hot Pursuit 2 reached an interesting enough performance that I've deciced to finally try to finish it. There's not a lot to talk about it... other than some of the final races being a pain in the ass (really, 10 laps in a huge track with tons of sharp turns? Come on, I can barely ride properly in my bicycle...). Sadly, most of the other games in the series are still too slow, but I'll keep an eye on them.
TOCA Racer Driver
On my list of "games no one touched in at least 2 years", this was amont the first ones. While testing it for the first time I got a nice surprise with the performance, so I've forced myself into finishing it (forced being the key word, I legit don't like this type of racing game). Only issue of note yet to be fixed is that there's some pop-ins (things becoming visible only when the camera is much closer than it should on real hardware), but nothing that breaks gameplay in any way.
New verified playable games:
Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk
Onimusha 3 - Demon Siege
Zombie Zone
Zombie Zone - Other Side
Chaos Legion
Simple 2000 Series Vol. 61: The OneeChambara
Simple 2000 Series Vol. 90: The OneeChambara 2
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Final Fight: Streetwise (PAL)
The Simpsons Game (PAL)
TOCA Race Driver
Compatibility got a nice bump, but a concern I see (and share) is performance for many games. There's a new branch with some minor changes that I've checked (you can verify it here), the gain among most stuff tested was something between 1 to 2 fps, so it's nothing major for what I was able to test but it's based on what game you're playing, maybe some other games can get a nice boost from those (worth saying that I've tested only 40 games). With that said, see you all next month and enjoy your new playable games ;)
