Lesson Compilation - Week of Feb. 16, 2026

This video documents real practice material assigned to one-on-one and video correspondence students this week.

This Week’s Student Practice Compilation — Breakdown

Rhythm Foundations

  • Downstroke vs upstroke strumming: alternating bars of all downstrokes, then all upstrokes

  • Rhythm-reading basics: whole, half, quarter, and 8th notes for a new reader

Syncopation Drills

  • Syncopated 4/4 pattern: 16th–8th–16th–8th repeated for 3 beats, then quarter note on beat 4

  • Syncopated 3/4 picking: alternating 16th + 8th throughout

  • 5/4 syncopated 16th-note rhythm (plus traditional palm-mute accent feel)

  • All-upstroke 16th-note rhythm focus

Gallops + Palm-Mute Downpicking

  • Gallop + reverse gallop combinations (16ths mixed with reverse gallops)

  • Single-string palm-muted downpicking: speed + endurance

  • Power-chord palm-muted downpicking: rapid chord changes, speed → endurance (shows up in multiple clips)

  • 7-string 3/4 riff: gallop + 8ths + reverse gallop, plus the downpicking/power-chord drill

Lead Technique and Lines

  • 8th-note lead sequence: descending run + two rhythmic 8th-note legato lines

  • Pentatonic 8ths: ascending A minor pentatonic + descending 5th-shape line

  • Sweep arpeggios (4-string)

  • Triplet lead work: legato run + pentatonic lick (ascending/descending)

Tapping

  • Sweep + tapping musical idea: 8th-note sweeping/tapping into 16th-note tapping + fast trills

  • Rhythmic tapping with slides

Synchronization Focus

  • 8th-note synchronization drills:

    • ascending high E string

    • descending high E string

    • up/down A minor pentatonic

Song Applications

  • Two exercises to nail a melodic riff from a song

  • Helloween – “I Want Out” verse rhythm: classic heavy metal palm-mute pattern

“Problem-Solving” Riff Work

  • Very challenging riff designed to drill a sticking point in a song

Each example was assigned with a specific purpose based on the individual student’s needs at the time. What you would personally receive may differ depending on your current level and goals.
