1 Minute Workout: Economy Picking
Hey everyone! I'm hyped to be back with the next instalment of the " 1 Min Workout" series, where I provide you guys fun, short workouts focussed on a specific guitar technique. This time we're focusing on ECONOMY PICKING!
Like last time, I've structured this exercise in a "5 levels" format with tapping licks of increasing difficulty; starting with getting-to-grips with the fundamental economy picking motion over 2 strings, and ending with some of the most insane economy licks I could come up with! Please be aware that I nerfed the BPM of this exercise from 120 to 110 to make it a bit more accessible - I've updated the tabs and backing track but the video still has the old tempo.
Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

yeah, I won't be doing this anytime soon lmao.
Bradley, I have been loving these 1 minute workouts and have used them to improve my techniques a lot. Was wondering if you could consider the same style of video by for Hybrid picking? I would love to learn that especially in this format! Thanks for all the great content!
I don’t know if you know Bradley but these 1 minute series are an absolute winner for people with ADHD ( I’m combined Autism and ADHD) I wish I’d had these (or the knowledge to split things into small workouts) in my 20’s but now I’m mid 50’s and feel like I’m making more progress than ever. Here’s to you 🍺🍺.
This is really difficult for some reason
Hi, It would be great to understand the ideas behind the chord progression Am-F-Am-Cdim. It’s clear that it’s a non-diatonic progression but wondering where Cdim fits in. Would be good to know the ideas / thinking behind the insanely cool chord substitutions !
Hey Nandy, good question! The Cdim is also the same as Adim as Diminished chords are symmetrical, so you can just use Adim as a substitute for Am when you wanna pivot back to it. Hope that makes sense! Sorry for the late reply, it's usualy better to ask this sort of stuff on Discord so I don't miss it!
I am mostly an economy picker. I usually always play with my pinky but I am trying to do runs without my pinky kinda like how Bradley plays. The stretch between the index and middle seem difficult to me, but when I can pull it off, it seems I have more control and strength than using my pinky. Should I keep trying this or should I just continue to use the pinky? I want to be flexible, but at the same time I don't want to find out later in months or so that nothing will improve because of physical limitations.
well I'm 10 months in on guitar. Wish me luck. :-)
Hi Bradley, first thanks for interesting exercise :-). And second, could you please include file for older versions of Guitar Pro. I'm using Guitar Pro 6 and I'm unable open the .gp file. Thanks a lot.
Never mind, I have discovered that latest Tuxguitar is able to open .gp files. So I'll use that one :-)
Jesus bloody tits. Brilliant. Bit more info on pick angle?
Economy Picking is basically the same motion/mechanic as sweeping, so whatever you use for sweeping will work just fine!
I prefere economics picking that alternate. It's fells more natural. It's a problem?
Not at all! I'm the same haha
That’s gonna take a lot more than a minute for me lol
This is a reupload of the original workout, I've just nerfed the BPM from 120 to 110 to make it a bit more accessible. Cheers!
