Genius method how to backup sensitive info 4 free

I don't think anyone has ever used this method to backup their sensitive info, but then again i'm different ^^

I hate phones, so i never link anything to my throw-away pre-paid SIM, other than the accounts that force me to use it and i'm constantly afraid that i lose access due SIM's inactivity, i have to remember to send at least 1 SMS every 6 months or it gets deactivated .. ugh, so stupid!

As about other accounts, i keep detailed backup files and here's my method how to keep it super secure and make free backups that should never expired or get deleted.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Encryption tool -- I suggest TrueCrypt or VeraCrypt. it's same thing, TC is the old discontinued tool, but it works fine. VC is continued version of TC.

2. Any public domain / website where you can host .txt files that can be accessed from web. I use my own website for that purpose. --- YOU ONLY NEED TEMPORARY STORAGE!

3. Internet archiving website, such as wayback machine (archive.org) or any other that does the same exact thing. I strongly suggest using browser plugin (i use wayback machine plugin for firefox).

MAKING THE BACKUP FILE:

With TrueCrypt or VeraCrypt, it's very easy:
+ volumes
+ create new volume...
+ create encrypted file container
+ follow the steps to make one
+ I STRONGLY recommend making it 10mb or less in size, you really don't need bigger container for simple text files that will hold your sensitive data.
+ Use unique strong password that only exists in your head, you can for example write something simple, yet complex: "mY name is blah doh and I live @ blabla street 51" you can include some - or _ in certain places, it's super easy to remember, yet nearly impossible to crack.

Once you've made the file, rename it to whatever you want. like blah.txt, but it MUST have .txt extension. I think html, php and other web formats will work too, but i tested only with .txt.

Before proceeding, make sure that your encrypted container is valid and you can mount it. TC and VC don't care for filename nor extension, that's the whole idea. Just drag n drop or select it manually and mount it by entering your password, check that it works.

SAVING THE UNDELETABLE BACKUP

This is the method that is really genius and i believe i invented it :)
First you need a website where to upload it, there are many free websites that allow hosting simple files.

Now upload blah.txt to that website and go to that URL. you will see lot of symbols as it's encrypted "text" file, like so:

k4Ť{!=)/'0gYݷ]Zy}:BqYxb֓f

Now it's time to check if it works:
+ Make sure page is fully loaded and you don't see loading icon anywhere.
+ right click and "save page as"
+ save it anywhere on your PC
+ once saved/downloaded, test once again and make sure you can mount it in TC or VC.
+ now simply use wayback machine or any other archiving website to save that page :)

once saved, you can go and grab that backup file from wayback machine at any time. Reason why i suggested the wayback machine extension, is cuz it allows you to "save now", which grabs the snapshot of it at any given time. I use it to make snapshots of same file.

HOWEVER, saving/downloading the backup from wayback machine is not as straight forward as right clicking and save page as.

In firefox, right click anywhere on the archived page and choose "this frame" > "save frame as ..." and save it as .txt. If this doesn't work do "this frame" > "open frame in new tab" and then save the new tab as before "save page as". you can also use "show only this frame" and then save it.

When using other archiving sites, you have to find a way to display original page only, without the iframe and headers that they add. Archiving sites usually display content inside <iframe>, so you have to extract it and display it as plain source. It can be done by using the method i described or from page source code.

I have tested this method with my own backup file and it works fine, i can save/download the archived file and open it in TrueCrypt. Unless there's some major apocalypse, i don't think those files ever get deleted. For extra peace of mind, you can archive it in more than just 1 archiving website. Just make sure your file is small enough for archiving websites. In fact you can store larger amount of data aswell, you need some file splitter tool. When making TC or VC containers, they don't care for anything other than the data itself. You can make like 1gb container and split it into pieces and use same method, then later put them back together.

I think image formats work too, but archive websites have issues with images sometimes, just use text. I think you should be able to copy-paste the entire page aswell, but some of those characters might not paste properly, i wouldn't recommend it.

This way you have online backup that doesn't depend on any device, you can grab it as long as you have internet access. Reason why i'm using this, is because i'm sick and tired of services that either charge lot of money or delete "inactive" accounts and data, such as imgur. I posted lot of screenshots there in past and now they're all gone, i hate it when websites delete old data, just keep it! However archive websites' purpose is to keep even the oldest data, that's why this method is genius ^.^
