I will be supporting on Pateron regardless of schedule. For me it is because I watched so much youtube and I know it definitely was not providing you with what you deserve for the content , especially with any ad blockers. I would love to see even just a short geoguesser video for these times where you cant make. if you were able to record for a few hours and chop those into backup episodes to use in this case, they definitely dont need to be recorded on the day.

Absolutely not a problem Tom and zero stress. Awkward time to have been trying to release something so it's definitely appreciated that you gave us a couple of episodes pre-Christmas. Anyone that genuinely feels the need to post negative comments saying otherwise needs to take a step back and rethink things. I saw someone else posted about you only letting us know about your latest straight line escapades after you'd finished most or all the editing. Thus removing the issue where you're then under pressure to deliver week after week. This is a good alternative.

I used to run into the same type of problem at my old job at a small video production company. Sometimes it's useful to render a project into smaller pieces and then combine those pieces in a separate step. Also, if there is a way to see at what point the render crashed (like at what percentage done,) then you can have a look at your timeline and see if there is anything funky or different around that area that may have caused the crash.

Please relax mate. I can't believe the harsh tone of some of these comments. I mean I get it, we all want to see the next episode, but I believe in you, you can't trust technology. Do it at your own pace, we'll be here when you're ready

As a full-time video editor, I felt every word of this update in my soul haha it is so much more work and can be so much more finicky than most people think and I can’t imagine doing it on top of doing… literally everything else, as you do. To be honest, I had always assumed you had a least a small crew based on the quality of these videos. To Tom: Take care of your own mental health first and release the video when it’s ready. You have done such an incredible job reeling us in and keeping us on the edge of our seats that many of us have been impatient. But forget about that. We will all still be here excited as ever when it’s ready. To those of you still commenting that you’re disappointed: I hear you, but also remember that you signed up for this because these videos are well worth a few bucks a month to you. And if you didn’t know Tom is good for it, you wouldn’t still be here. So go rewatch the previous episodes in anticipation. Or revisit HNTT Europe. Or hell, I’ll do you one better: get outside and make your own little adventure. There’s more to life than YouTube.

Tom, I'm not going to lie to you (and I'm sure this won't be the most liked comment you see), but I'm a little disappointed. I love your content. I have loved it for years. I've watched every single release you've made for the last 3, I reckon. I don't mind delays. I don't mind you taking a break. What I do mind a bit is the lack of communication. The space you occupy is crowded. I'm a lover of both the geoguessr and the adventure content. I don't understand why we, as fans of yours, were not given an update for the last 1 month of silence on the channel. I love your videos man, and I would have been fucking thrilled with an unedited 30 minute video of you doing gueguessr duels while explaining why you can't get the next adventure video out on time. Maybe I'm naive, but that doesn't seem like a huge amount to ask. It just feels a little bit like we, as your fans, are being taken for granted. You deserve a break over Christmas mate, absolutely, but you'd said that HNTTA vids were coming out weekly - why not make a video or at least a post explaining that that isn't the case?

Editing is hard! Appreciate the update, please get some sleep and don't get sick worrying about it. For video software, I switched to Davinci Resolve a few years ago and haven't looked back, much faster and more reliable in my experience than final cut or premiere. The "cut" page and functionality makes poring over hours of footage much easier. Also it's free! For the current project, if you try exporting smaller chunks of the timeline from vegas (like 5 min at a time) you can maybe get them to render faster and then just stitch them together with premiere or other software.

As I've seen other commenters say I think with future series you should just wait till its all done till you start releasing. I would imagine it would be better for your youtube business/algorithm to have a regular release schedule, especially for the non patreons and non subscribers. Hopefully it would be a little less stressful for you too. Sorry to hear about the struggles, im sure its very frustrating.

Hey Tom I don’t know the details of your rendering issues, obviously, but have you considered rendering the video in smaller chunks and then smashing those chunks together either in a new project or via a tool that will just combine videos together? Best of luck!

I wouldn’t worry too much mate, we will all get the episodes at some point you’re not going to disappear. Is it possible for future missions to not speak about their release so much and just complete the whole series before you release it. That way you could release at your leisure. Even if it was a year after it was filmed. Or just don’t speak about release dates and just say they come when they will come. I understand you want to fulfil your Patreon subscribers though. Must be hard for you mate but we’re here still! 😀👍

We're fine whenever Tom, it's not like I click refresh a thousand times a day on your channel (more like 100). Also, I love Davinci for editing, robust and clean.

I’m a patron because I care, not because I want the content early. I’ll be ready when it’s ready.

Tom, I’m an unscripted TV editor here in the UK. We (we being usually an Editor, Edit Producer, Senior Edit Producer and Production/Channel Executives) will typically spend anything from 6 to 10 or even 12+ weeks on an hour long program. That includes a decent idea of what is going to happen in the episode via a pre written script. Then the fun starts; reviewing the footage, cutting, initial assembly, changes, more cutting, more changes, writing voice over, recording and laying it down, audio mixing, colour grading, the list goes on. The thing I always think when watching your videos is that you more or less do ALL of what I’ve said above, on your own, in a far shorter space of time AND it’s always really well made and written. It’s phenomenal work ethic, it really is, and I think it’s totally fair enough for people to wait a little longer. It’s a mammoth task, even when there’s 4-5 of you involved, so I can’t imagine what it’s like flying solo. Big respect dude, and looking forward to it whenever it lands. 🙌🏼😃

Hi Tom, I really don't care about not keeping to schedule. The quality of the end result speaks for itself. But if it is stressing you out, perhaps for future series you might consider scheduling the release of each video a week after you plan on finishing it. That would mean you'd always have a week of a buffer in case things don't go to plan. That would mean the release schedule wouldn't be impacted by unforeseen delays. So for example, when episode 3 is released, you'd have already edited episode 4.

I worry that if you stress too much then you'll be less likely to continue the adventures, and I would hate that as they give my life meaning: I'm always talking about your antics and watching your videos and look forward to them so much, so if we have to wait a little bit longer for them, please don't stress it. Having your content and having most of it available for free and all of it for a small price is a godsend. On the flipside, I think it shows you're among the most human creators, you've never detached from your fans and you're always concerned with their needs, which I think is a reflection of your great character. I really think it's fine that it takes longer than predicted. Things fuck up, and that's just what will happen. If I were you, I'd avoid giving specific dates when the videos will be uploaded. There's really no need to rush. Just focus on making the videos as good as possible and release it when it's ready

Stop making promises: if you need to keep apologising for missing deadlines, something has to change, and given the deadlines are entirely self-imposed, that’s the easiest thing to do. The problem with missing a promised schedule isn’t that viewers need the videos, it’s just that when you do make a commitment, people integrate that commitment into their life. No commitment is better than a commitment you don’t meet. The videos will be great whenever they come out, it doesn’t matter, the only problem is the obsessive need to schedule and promise. Just release them whenever you’re ready, and let people expect them to be released whenever they’re ready. You’ll never have to apologise again! :)

If people are getting upset about a favorite creator taking a bit longer under stressful circumstances to put out fantastic content they can’t get anywhere else, they should take a second to check themselves. Think about the effort you put in, think about how in a different world this stuff might not exist at all.

Hey Tom. Thank you for the update. I’m looking forward to the next episode. I have something I want to address. It seems the last episode attracted a lot of racists claims in the comment section. I’m not saying that is your fault, not at all, but I think you as the creator have the obligation to address it. To me your channel is all about traveling around the world, meeting new people and getting to know different cultures. It is sad to see that there are obvious racist people in the comments and I don’t want those in this community.

How not to travel europe is literally my all time favorite youtube series and I rewatch it frequently. How not to travel america, is going to be a series that will last me a very long time as well and I would rather wait for it as long as it takes instead of having the quality being degraded, because you are feeling rushed.

Tom - I think your editing is a huge part of the creative process - the dribbling video was fine but I didn't like the editing style as much. Your a one of a kind auteur and I'll happily wait for the end result.

Speaking for myself, I support this channel on Patreon because I can’t help but cheer for a guy like you to make a career out of your love for adventure and geography and fun. I’ve never been under the impression that I’m paying to support some top-of-the-line professional video production studio as they pump out content. This is an indie channel, and from where I stand, I’d rather see content on a random schedule that you truly love making than content on a set schedule that you aren’t really passionate about.

All good! I’m personally not paying Patreon for the content a bit early or whatever, although that stuff is nice. I just want to be a part of helping make sure you don’t need to worry about full time jobs and other life stuff so you can focus on making more great content.

The engineer in me says there is no predicament here, you know that software is causing you problems (and consuming your time to try to fix, so costing you money) so invest elsewhere and in doing so maybe even streamline your whole workflow. I’m not in the video editing world so I can’t offer any specific recommendations. My suggestion for the current issue though is try another render overnight where it won’t consume your time. If it fails, then in the morning you could try rendering it into smaller files and then maybe putting those back into the software as more complete chunks and attempt to render those into a single file, at least that way it hasn’t got to compute so many different video and audio channels for the full duration. For any new subscribers that may be disappointed with the release schedule slip, if you haven’t already all I can recommend is binging the old content, there is loads of it and it’s all great!

No worries mate. At the end of the day, your content is free, you don't owe anyone an explanation. Patreon for me is just a nice little way to say thanks and support future content - there's no expectation from me as a subscriber for you to get videos out by a certain date or whatever. Keep up the great work!

Why not give DaVinci Resolve a go? It's free and very solid, found it to be better than both Vegas and Premier in a lot of areas.

Thanks for the update and I really appreciate all your effort! I'm a video editor myself and If I may give you a tip, you could try exporting the episode in 15 minute chunks (however many tries that takes), then re-import those intermediate video files into Sony Vegas or Premiere, insert them one after the other into a new timeline and try to export the final video that way. My editing machine sometimes struggles to export complex music video projects, and I use this approach as a last resort.

You should download davinci resolve. It’s free and easy to use. Check a quick YouTube video on the basics and if you have any questions I’d help you. I’ve never had it crash and it handles everything I throw at it.
