Early Access // The Whitby Gown

Hello again! While the orchid video is up for all on the channel today, I wanted to give you early access to Thursday's video covering the skirt and final embellishments for the finished Whitby gown! I am so pleased with how this costume came out and I'm excited to dive into some more epic projects soon 🖤

PS: often Patreon gives me wackadoodle spreadsheets, so hopefully the credits have got all the Conservators and Preparators included 😬 If your name is missing do let me know so I can make sure it gets into the credits next time!! (edit! fixed/reuploaded once already, sorry if your comment got deleted!!)

Wonderful gown! Love how your brain works....all the flowers are perfect. Both versions, day bodice and evening bodice are beautiful! By the way where are you filming? Is this a house museum?

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Bobbie! It is a house but not exactly a museum, it's more of a wedding venue, but they allow anyone to take photos outside. To take photos inside is absurdly expensive for an unfurnished place sadly. They have some modern furniture, but only the bathrooms are super "vintage" looking as they still have their original 1920s tile schemes. You can see the inside in this ancient blog post of mine http://theclosethistorian.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-art-deco-bathroom.html

Absolutely stunning gown! And now you have put in my mind the need for a poisonous flower hat. How have I managed to live so long without one!

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you! Surely we all need poison flower hats in our lives 😂

I forgot to ask, what do you have hanging at your waist in the day bodice footage? It looks like some sort of a brooch with a tiny bell? It looks nice whatever it is!

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

It is a watch fob style brooch charm thingy that I felt fit the vibe yes!

Melody McMath · August 8, 2023

I love the idea of a poisonous flower hat! I would wear one.

Zoeayn Pollard · August 8, 2023

Absolutely stunning! I'd totally wear this as a wedding dress. Because of you I'm going to attempt drafting and flower making. I'm also wanting to making some carnivorous plants, so if you do that, that would be awesome because then I don't have to work it out 😆😆😆 Seriously though thank you for sharing your wonderful work 😊

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Zoeayn! If I got married tomorrow (which would be very unlikely 🤣) I would definitely wear this gown!

C
Clara Weber · August 8, 2023

This is so stunning, Bianca!!! I am in awe! How do you sit without crushing the flowers on the tails though?? And now I'm feeling the urge to try my hand at making silk flowers... 🙈

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Clara! Since the back flower sash things are not attached to the skirt in any way, I can just lift them up, sit, and then lay them down softly so they don't get smooshed!

It's always a treat to see footage of you at that castle type place. What treasures you create! I couldn't get over your hand painted fan and what nice waves you had going on in your hair. Everything is so beautiful and you make it look effortless, though I know it only comes from hard work. Gee, with all of that poison ivy, "you're going to need an ocean of calamine lotion."😅 I also have to commend your twirl, which was timed perfectly to the flourish of piccolos!🥀👏🏻

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Penny! Behind the scenes of effortless= it started pouring rain the minute I finished my hair and makeup, and continued long enough that I had to go back to the castle-ish house later in the evening and only just managed to get any footage due to the ongoing sprinkling 😂 I was a grumpy cat!

This is incredible. I love flowers and for some reason never made the connection to put them onto clothes. Thank you for always being wildly inspiring Also I JUST bought a bunch of grab bags from Silk Baron to make a poison bouquet because of the last video 😅

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Maeghi! That is a most excellent silk idea! I want to make an arrangement to house under glass sometime in the future ✨

It's sorta weird, but almost all the classic cottage garden plants are either food herbs, or more poisonous than you'd think you'd want to have near your home. Foxglove can slow your heart - Digitalis is the name of a heart medication made from them and the name of the plant's genus. Delphiniums/larkspur are your general purpose bad tasting poisonous garden plant that kills a lot of cattle when it grows in grazing land. Most of the morning glory family has seeds that can make you hallucinate. True lilies are in the onion family which means that they can cause kidney failure if you eat them (which is why we mostly cook garlic and onions, and why pets aren't supposed to eat them). Castor plants have beautiful giant red leaves but the beans can be made into ricin and the whole plant is "wear gloves" toxic -which is a level past where I plant stuff. I suggest looking into carnivorous plants for inspiration. Venus fly traps are the best known, but sundews and pitcher plants come in striking colors and textures. Especially look at the flowers of carnivorous plants. The flowers are less obvious than the fancy leaves, but they look a little like a tiny orchid or violet on a long tall stalk high above the danger so the insects that pollinate them aren't trapped.

Are you communing with nature at Cheeseman Park (full of dead people)? It’s a beautiful project!! I’d dance with you for sure at a ball, even if I just got myself poisoned for stepping on your feet :) As for more flowers to try… how about a corpse flower? I had to make a baby pink flower for a quilt for some I didn’t like. So I made a corpse flower. The shape and color are quite suggestive….

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you Susan! Sadly I don't make it down to Cheeseman park often enough, though mostly I love the botanic gardens adjacent even more!

Gorgeous!! My fingers hurt watching all that detail work. In re poisonous flowers and plants, some other lookers that are not great for the human body: Lily of the valley, monkshood (aka wolfsbane, which is a super-metal alternative name), wild parsnip (looks like queen Anne's lace), oh, and, Doll's Eyes! Oh and you could contemplate carnivorous plants, too: Jack in the pulpit is gorgeous and terrifying! And its just such a wild evolutionary divergence! Can you tell one of my seasons of insomnia was spent learning about gardening?! Okay, shutting up now. Well done making yet another dreamy dress, Bianca! 🙂

T
The Closet Historian · August 13, 2023

Thank you!! I think some flowers are unfortunately just too delicate to replicate, though I love the look of things like Queen Anne's lace so perhaps embroidery is the way forward for the more intricate buddies!

Again … there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said. Simply a stunning, beautiful, breathtaking piece of wearable art. I would LOVE to see it actually worn. Fingers crossed that you can find your dream home and host your own Halloween Extravaganza! What I CAN say is … 1) maybe your fascination with all things ‘bugs’ is actually your subconscious attempt to overcome your fear of them?? And, 2) I’ve had cats who absolutely respected the ‘boundaries’ of my furniture (not to mention my skin) but others who simply do not, and being a human who LOVES my animals, I couldn’t part with them, nor ask them to part with their fingers so, to THAT, I say … Claw Caps … a god send if ever there was one!

j
just me · August 7, 2023

Our cats wore claw caps when they initially moved into my then-boyfriend's home while I did some military service. It seemed like one wear was all they needed to lay off furniture! They are still monsters on carpet and rugs, but the only issue with them and furniture is fur. 😄
