This Week's Video - Uhh a little early?

I am stuck under a pile of silk flowers, it's not the worst fate, but I am ready for a change!!

Here is the first of a handful of silk flower making tutorials that will be coming to the channel this month. This hardly counts as proper early access, but again, I'm under a mountain of flowers at the moment so alas, forgive me! I'm very excited to get all of these buds sewn onto the Whitby gown and get back to some more standard style sewing shortly ✨

Based on how beautiful the results are (here and in the pictures you posted yesterday), you appear to have the technique figured out, but if there are any Russian instructions you need to decipher, I'd be more than happy to translate them for you.

Thank you Laurel! I'll have to remember that, seeing as google translate is iffy at best 😂

H, Thank you for the lovely video. I very much enjoy seeing you making flowers, and I can't wait for the peonies, (and the dress of course). As you mentioned having something that could make bell-shaped flowers, maybe you want to have a look at Digitalis Purpura, or Deadly Nightshade. They are kind of the mother of deadly flowers in my very limited view. They were the first deadly plants I came across when I started reading grown up mystery novels, at the ripe age of 14 (that was when I started reading them in English. I read them In my language before then of course, and the flower's name is "fingerborgsblomma"), so they are the classic in my life. That you make a medicine for heart disease out of them, make them even more mysterious, to me as that made them more difficult to detect. Someone that has made flowers on the net before, is a lovely lady called Ilona of ByIlonaMillinery on Youtube. Reputedly she is also on Instagram, but as I don't do Instagram, this is purely hearsay. I remember her making Poppies from organdy and a few others. She is using vintage and/or antique tools, and she had tips on stamens and things like that. She is a milliner based in London, and she is a lovely lady, and very much into her vintage hat making too. You two might make a good match Youtube wise. I'm of course looking forward to the dress that will have most of the flowers you're making, just like everyone else. Take care of yourself and have a lot of fun. Yours, Ann

Foxgloves are beautiful and poisonous

That rose looks fabulous! Random question - what happens if you don't soak the silk in the glue solution?

T
The Closet Historian · July 29, 2023

Thank you Karen! The glue solution stiffens the silk so it holds the shape you iron in better, like starch when ironing, but it also crucially helps the edges not to fray as well. They used to/still use gelatine, but I find gelatine gross 😅

OMG! Once again! 🤪🤯 mind blown! I wish I would've known about this when I did my wedding in 84! Colors where peach & ivory! The art. Flowers 💐 to begin with were BLah! Plastic, stiff, no personality! PEACH! Any who...I ended up using tiger lillies! They at least were NOT plastic! Poppy can be a poisonous plant! We make heroin out of it. State flower of Cali!

My mom had peach and seafoam green as her colors in 1988 ✨ Gotta have that peach!

These are gorgeous. Ranunculus is my toxic favourite, and would lend well to this technique I think.

You did a pretty dang good job of 'filling the void' and I love the thought of making a silk bouquet of dangerous flowers. What about Oleander, Hensbane, or Poppies? I did a whole research blog post/art project on dangerous plants if you'd like the link 😅

T
The Closet Historian · July 29, 2023

Thank you Maeghi! With the colors of silk I had left I managed to make a few belladonna and then some poison ivy leaves 😅

My grandma used to make flowers, my mom said she preferred to use sheets of wood fibre that may have came from Taiwan? but the factory burned down so she started using silk ribbon. She passed away a while back so her knowledge and her books are unfortunately gone, but my mom says she didn't use heat she just used water and starch. This video from British Pathé might be the more or less how she was doing it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3SXQGJGn4w&ab_channel=BritishPath%C3%A9 (edited to say the wood fiber sheets might be called Sola wood now)

Interesting! I have seen there is a ton of flower making done in crepe paper now which probably uses similar techniques. They look gorgeous!
