Finishing the Final Look // Sneak Peek!
Look, I hate reality TV (said the youtuber) but today I completed a Project Runway style challenge. Last night I quickly mocked up a 16th century stays pattern from an online pattern generator, but that was my only bit of a head start before today I:
-Drove to craft store to get leaves, spray paint, ribbon for lacing stays, etc
-Came home and spray painted cheap crown and leaves copper
-Made modifications to stays pattern
-Cut out 3 layers of fabric for stays
-Made entire stays/top/bodice thing including hand finished binding and setting the grommets
-Assembled and painted crown
-Made quick little cape thing and sleeve-ish drapes for stays and tacked them on
-Embellished stays with trim and sequins
I finished an entire set of half boned stays/costumey garment bodice evening top in one day, and I don't even get to have Michael Kors insult me. Do the stays/bodice thing fit perfectly? No, there is a slight gap at the back waist and slight overlap between the shoulder blades, but for one day? Not half bad, I'm allowing myself this as a win!

That jacket is *chef's kiss* Thanks to your videos I've been meaning to get basic block patterns for myself for ages, and over the last few weeks have finally sorted out a well fitting skirt block and a mostly well fitting bodice block -- the bodice front was the hardest of the lot to get right and it's still slightly loose across the chest above the bust, but whenever I try to fix that, it gets too tight over the bust! First thing I'm going to make is something to wear to a friend's wedding in July. I feel like I've done the hardest bit now though, you make pattern drafting look so easy! I also do find it interesting how different my blocks look to yours even though I think my bust/hip/waist measurements are quite similar to yours. I would love to see some kind of comparison of how different blocks with theoretically similar measurements look based on other aspects of the body -- I'm really short waisted, so my bodice block looks a lot like someone has chopped the bottom few inches off yours, and while I have a ~27cm difference between waist and hips, almost all of that difference is in the back, so my front skirt block ended up with only one relatively small dart. (Not saying you should do this, as it would be a lot of work, but I do find it very interesting!)
Good work getting those blocks together!! I'm afraid I have only ever made block patterns for a standard size 8 (a real human size 0-2) dress form in fashion school, and then blocks for myself. I am therefore woefully unqualified sadly 😂

In my fantasy life...I wear clothes like this. A bit badass with the cut of the jacket, a bit whimsy with the tiara/and tulle- most likely in some amazing boots accompanied by fluttering bug beauties as I traipse through the woods on the way to my dragons cave.

Everything is so pretty, but I have to say, the collar on that jacket (bodice?) is *chef's kiss*. Such a beautiful and flattering line. I LOVE those collars, lol. Looking forward to seeing the entire thing. It's a really lovely palette.
