Making a Tall/Wide Collared Dress // Round 2!

I had the video nearly ready to go...but it just wasn't coming together!

I had to start over, and try to explain myself properly. So here is the same dress, but different. I decorated the peplum a little more subtly, but you've seen me color block before, so there are no mysteries there. Then I couldn't find a stretch fabric to match this abstract cotton sateen, so instead of the double layered sleeve like the black and petrol dress, I just did the short sleeves on this new buddy. I am actually super pleased with this new dress, even if I wasn't expecting to make another dress this last week eek!

I'll be back with the podcast soon, thank you for your patience and Happy Holidays!

Thanks Bianca, the collar explanation really was clear this time. I've been meaning to join your patreon for a while and wanting to see this tutorial tipped me over. I want to draft an assymetric funnel neck coat so this will really help me. Thanks for all the inspo and great videos 🖤

T
The Closet Historian · December 30, 2022

Thank you so much Elizabeth! I can't stop using this collar now, so hopefully additional understanding of how best to explain it all will arrive with repetition 😅

Really enjoyed this tutorial. Not likely to start making clothes anytime soon, but I learn so much from you, and find your instruction to be fairly rational too :)

Thank you! I forever fear I am as confusing aloud as I am in my head 🤣

The dress looks fantastic! My favorite way you arrange the collar is the wide, sort of portrait neckline, but all of them are fun. I think the explanation was very clear. Congratulations on getting 100,000 subscribers, and enjoy a well-deserved writing break!

T
The Closet Historian · December 27, 2022

Thank you Laurel! It's fun to have such a versatile garment that changes on a whim ✨

Cheryl Rosbak · December 22, 2022

Love versatility of the collar and the way the peplum stands out away from your body. I'd describe this as double-breasted with a zipper where the lower inner button would be.

T
The Closet Historian · December 27, 2022

Thank you Cheryl! Yes it's like double breasted but button-less 😂

A
Amie Hamilton · December 22, 2022

Your explanations are much clearer than you give yourself credit for! You literally taught be how to sew in 2022, and I can't say how much I appreciate this gift. I really do hope you take a long break to look after yourself and to write. Have a very safe and happy Christmas from Australia xxc

T
The Closet Historian · December 27, 2022

Thank you Amie! Happy Christmas!! I promise I'm taking things slow and will get some writing in as I refresh for new fun projects ahead!

Long-time lurker, but regular viewer of the channel with my wife, who's the sewer in our family. Loving the cyberpunk vibes - warms my William Gibson-reading heart to see it.

T

Thank you Patrick! I love designing cyberpunk-ish stuff, so more to come in the future for sure!

I love it and I love this whole elegant retro-futuristic vibe you've had this year. I'm just thinking, how awesome would this be in a shiny deep dark purple with a chartreuse or neon green lining...

Woohoo you hit the 100K!!!!! Congratulations on this! You deserve it. Quite a Christmas gift for you. The dress (and jacket) turned out wonderful and there is nothing wrong with you explaining: clear as a cristal to me! Have a lovely holiday season with your family and WRITE! So you will be all jazzed up for the new year!😍

Laura Heckman · December 22, 2022

Such a cool dress, the abstract fabric with the asymmetric details is just stunning. Quick question: I noticed the bodice fastens left over right (the traditional way US men's clothing fastens) and I was wondering if that was a deliberate screw-the-patriarchy choice or if design-wise you just wanted the peplum on the left (to leave more space for a handbag on the right maybe?) and it was easier to design the bodice to overlap that way? Or some other reason that hasn't occurred to me? In any case you look amazing in it and now I want to dig through my stash to see if I have any asymmetric prints hiding in there. Stay safe (and warm!) and I hope you get to enjoy some much deserved writing time soon! ❤️

T
The Closet Historian · December 27, 2022

Thank you Laura! It is because I wanted the peplum on the left yes, but I also never remember to think which side things are "supposed" to overlap either 😅 I can never remember which side is the "lady" side, so I am consistently googling "ladies trench" and looking at the image results to wrap my brain around it every time 🤣

F
ForgottenSaves · December 22, 2022

Love this dress! As usual, the combination of your voiceover with seeing the pattern come together and assembly is phenomenal for understanding how the design works. Do hope you get a break soon, and thanks for dropping all the synapse looks just in time for the holidays - feels like a winter gift haha

T
The Closet Historian · December 27, 2022

Thank you!! I've got a few more Synapse-ish sewing videos coming to the channel in January, the hooded scarf and the hooded/collared vest thing, so the retro futuristic stuff shall continue a while longer yet 😂✨
