Early Access // This Week's Video

I LIVEEEE!

So I've been fully embracing the spookiest of vibes by getting struck down with none other than the plague, aka spicy cough, aka covid. I swear, you leave the house one time to do some Halloween decor hunting, and before you know it, you're stuck very much inside with more than a new pumpkin or two to show for it. I have been super lucky in that I had a relatively mild case all things considered, for which I am very thankful. I did give the infamous covviiD to my younger brother (oops, I asked him to fix my game settings on my PC and he touched my mouse and keyboard before I knew I was sick...), but both of my parents managed to miss out on our fun (thank goodness my mom had a booster in June!).

I was in bed for several days with bad fatigue/aches/goop, but fought it off with the help of my very outdated booster from last winter. Now I'm testing negative, but do still have a lingering cough that is oh so much fun, and only about 1/2 my usual sense of smell and therefore taste. Looking forward to being able to enjoy fall scented candles again in another week perhaps...

So of course, my entire work/video schedule and well laid plans have been shattered  to bits and I'm simply doing my best to get /most/ of what I had originally planned done and out for this the best-of-all months. My to-do lists are entirely too packed to allow for several days away to lie like a zombie instead of sew. I am still very much hoping I can get an Edwardian gown finished for the 31st itself, but I also have a dramatic dressing gown and a Halloween set/lookbook to make before then, and two videos to edit as well, so as is my modus operandi, I am back to racing the clock.

Which is all a very long winding way of saying, I finally got another video finished with a few days of buffer so I can preview it here. Thank you so much for your support while I have been a bit MIA. As I said on the channel recently, usually I disappear to embroider something for ages, but this last week I could only dream of returning to my sequin stash.

This week on the channel I've got this rather poofy silk shirt in decadent red and black silk dupioni. I wanted a sort of vampire-romance-novel-cover poetic vibe and I think this fits the bill nicely! The amount of gathering in the back is a /bit/ much in this fabric, but worked better in my mock up in drapier cotton, so I think it will be a matter of adjusting this pattern closely for each fabric I wish to make it up in.

I hope you like this project and I can't wait to wear it out and about now that I am allowed back into the wider world. For now I must dive into editing this months Patreon exclusive sewing video for this week!

Hope you are back to 100% soon! And great to hear your parents dodged the plague. I’m sure it’s super stressful to have your schedule so rudely disrupted, but when you’re sick you’re sick, and resting/recovering is the priority!

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Colleen! Yes nothing demands a full halt to the calendar quite like being very ill 😅

Glad to hear you’re on the mend💕 Have you ever worked with bamboo silk? It seems lovely but I’m yet to try it. I’ve been restricted to drooling over it at the fabric store (Raystitch) I love your videos and have a request for something you touched on in this video. I have my bodice block but don’t want something quite so fitted. Could you at some point cover adding a bit of ease. I’m just not sure if I can just add at the sides or enlarge like if I was sizing up a pattern (hmmm did I just answer that myself? 🤔) Take care whilst you’re still convalescing.

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Marie! I have sadly never worked with any bamboo fabrics! Truly I am no ease expert, as I usually work with around zero ease on my own clothes 😅 I can look into for the future!

This blouse is epic!!! The sleeves are everything. I am in love with that shade of red on you as well. Just gorgeous. I hope you are feeling better, sending you love and Boops to the babies!

It is too bad that the plague caught up with you, but I'm so glad that you are on the mend - do take it easy though. I have had my third booster last Friday, so hopefully I will keep free of it. Beautiful red shirt, and it looks so dramatic and seductive.

What an amazing blouse and fabric! <3 Also, I hope you get better soon. Please make sure to take enough rest (easier said than done, I know ... *sigh*).

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you! Yeah rest is not my strong suit 😅

Melody McMath · October 19, 2022

love the blouse and the drafting instructions. If you ever get a break in your planning could you draft a 1930’s Hooverette? One needs a house dress that could be worn out as opposed to what the now call house dresses ,ugh. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I have learned so much.

Melody McMath · October 19, 2022

I’m sorry you got Covid but glad you are feeling better. Just a reminder to the rest of us that the Pandemic is not really over and masking and physical distancing are still needed. Those will help prevent flu as well.

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Melody! Definitely still around 😖

Debra B. Dixon · October 19, 2022

Bummer on the crud!! I did that in June. Hubby brought it back from work travel. 🤬Fortunately we were okay. That cough did linger and the tiredness. Don’t push too hard!

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Debra! Hopefully I'll be cough free soon!

Penny Johnson · October 19, 2022

It’s so red, love it! I could even see wearing this as it’s not clingy. I think you have a gold parrot to go with this pirate shirt, no?🦜 Happy to hear you are on the mend!

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Penny! Indeed I do have a gold parrot, but my cat Oli also likes to sit on my shoulders now so perhaps he can be a pirate cat!

L
Lynn Hamilton · October 19, 2022

Love it! Yes I would love to see this shirt in every fabric. Do you think viscose would be too drapey? Thanks as always! ❤️💜

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thanks Lynn! I think a viscose would be lovely actually, more 40's looking!

I’m so sorry you got COVID, but happy to read you’re on the mend. Please don’t rush for us. Your health is more important. We’ll all be here no matter what.

Luciana Keil · October 19, 2022

So sorry you got covid. Please focus on rest as much as you can stand to until you're feeling all better. Your health comes first as you can't do much else without it. As a chronically ill person who gets very little done I know this all too well.

T

Love the fabric and color choices. After watching your tutorials and subscribing to your Patreon page, I dug out my Singer 66, which as you probably know is a bigger version of the Singer 99, and am so excited to get it cleaned up and in working order to start sewing on it. You are absolutely inspiring. I have to replace the wiring and get some parts. Did you have to get parts for yours initially, if so, is there a place on line that you can recommend. 🙂🙂🙂

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Pam! I'm glad your 66 machine will be getting some love! I just looked up parts on ebay and etsy ✨

Hi, This was a real treat to find in my email. Thank you so much. If you're going to make another one of these shirts/blouses/chemises anyway, why not try the shantung while you're at it. That way you'll work with another of Silkbaron's silks on your way to the crêpes and charmeuses. You are heading that way aren't you😉😊. Seriously though, another experience can't hurt, can it? Though it disturbs me to hear that you managed to catch Covid-19, I'm glad to hear that you are testing negative and are getting better. I'm so glad to hear that you kept it to yourself and your brother, and that your parents are okay. I estimate that they are about my age and I know that I can't afford to get sick, so that might make me a bit partial. I do have a wonky immune system and even wonkier lungs, so it's not the same as most folks of course. I hope that your taste and smell will return quickly and that you won't get any kinds of long Covid symptoms. It would be a shame if you can't enjoy your fall scented candles this year. Take care of yourself and I can't wait to see what you've come up with for Halloween. Yours, Ann

The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Ann!

Ooooh I love this shirt. I've been eyeing red and black dupion I silk for ages, this gives me ideas! Glad you came unscathed from the plague. I'm fighting off a cold right now (my home test was negative for covid but I did have the plague over last new years eve) so I can only ogle your lovely work!

T
The Closet Historian · October 22, 2022

Thank you Helga! I hope your cold disappears fast!

Agree with the rest of them, just focus on the stuff for the channel as the halloween-projects often are a good marketing opportunity for you. We can manage to wait for our patreon exclusive dopamine injection ;)

Thank you Dalana! A few more Halloween videos coming up 🎃

Toadify · October 18, 2022

hello, I saw that there was this new video when going home in the car from an event that honestly was kind of mweh (my college proclamation - everyone was terribly underdressed and nobody complimented the dress I had worked on for two weeks, there were lots of people so it was very chaotic and I didn't even see any old teachers show up), so I looked forward to watching the video when I got home before bed. But now the video has disappeared for me? 'video has been deleted by uploader'

I'm so sorry the plague got you! But glad that, while still miserable, it's mild enough you don't need a hospital. As much as I love your videos please please please take as much time as you need to rest and recover, waiting a little longer for a new video so you can heal is absolutely worth it. ❤️
